3 - The Name of Allah Al-Muhaymin - (6/10/19)

The Name of Allah: المهيمن

After knowing that Allah is Al-Muhaymin, a person should:

3) Fulfill the rights of others

When people are unaware of Allah’s هيمنة and they are in a position of strength, they may wrong others, because they do not feel that anyone is witnessing what they do and preserving their actions.

E.g. Parents think they own their children and no one has the right to question their parenting. They may abuse their children. They do not realize that Allah witnesses their actions and records it.

E.g. Allah said in Surah An-Nisa [4:127]:

“They ask your legal instruction concerning women, say: Allah instructs you about them, and about what is recited unto you in the Book concerning the orphan girls whom you give not the prescribed portions (as regards Mahr and inheritance) and yet whom you desire to marry, and (concerning) the children who are weak and oppressed, and that you stand firm for justice to orphans. And whatever good you do, Allah is Ever All-Aware of it.“

Surah An-Nisa is about women, who are weak, and it addresses the weak members of society. This verse is about women whether young or old, married or unmarried. Allah has given them rights.

Allah then emphasizes the rights of orphans. Whoever has an orphan under their guardianship should fear Allah, Al-Muhaymin. In the pre-Islamic days of ignorance, a man would throw his cloak on an orphan girl and that would mean no one else could approach her. Then he would take her wealth unlawfully; if she was beautiful he would marry her, and if she was not beautiful he would keep her unmarried to get benefit of her money, and even if he gave her in marriage to someone he would take the dowry for himself.

This occurs nowadays. There are women whose fathers take their dowry or make their daughter divorce and remarry to get a new dowry.

This shows us Allah’s mercy with the weak members of society. He is the One who will take account of those who oppress and wrong them.

Surah an-Nisa began with the verse [4:1]:

“O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you.”

Ar-Raqeeb is one of the meanings of the name Al-Muhaymin. Although it is only mentioned in Surah Al-Hashr, the impacts of the name can be found throughout the Qur’an.

E.g. In Surah An-Nisa, Allah mentioned the characteristics of righteous wives and He mentioned how to deal with the wife who is disobedient to her husband. Sometimes, a woman may see that her husband transgresses against her rights, so in order to defend herself she may misbehave with him. He increases in transgression and she increases in misbehavior. Both of them are unaware that Allah is Muhaymin over them and is a witness over their hearts and what they are doing. If they believe that Allah is Muhaymin, they will know that Allah is a witness over what the other is doing and will take account of them.

In Surah An-Nisa, Allah repeatedly mentioned “و كفى بالله وكيلا” (Allah is sufficient as a Wakeel) and “و كفى بالله شهيدا” (Allah is sufficient as a Witness).

The Prophet ﷺ set a principle from us:
  أَدِّ الْأَمَانَةَ إِلَى مَنْ ائْتَمَنَكَ ، وَلا تَخُنْ مَنْ خَانَكَ
Render back the trust to the one who entrusted you, and do not betray those who betray you.
[At-Tirmidhi #1264 and graded Sahih by Al-Albani]

Even if your husband wrongs you, you should not behave in a like manner. Fulfill his rights and wait for your recompense from Allah. When you stand in front of Allah on the Day of Judgement, He will account you for what you did, not what so-and-so did.

Allah said in Surah Al-Kahf [18:49]:

“And the Book (one's Record) will be placed (in the right hand for a believer in the Oneness of Allah, and in the left hand for a disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah), and you will see the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners, etc.), fearful of that which is (recorded) therein. They will say: "Woe to us! What sort of Book is this that leaves neither a small thing nor a big thing, but has recorded it with numbers!" And they will find all that they did, placed before them, and your Lord treats no one with injustice.”

This is from the impact of the name of Allah Al-Muhaymin; His knowledge encompasses everything. He witnesses our actions and preserves it.

Everything is recorded in that book, even your جهاد النفس (striving against the evil of your soul). No one is aware of this internal struggle and pain except Allah; Al-Muhaymin, and He will record that for you in your book of good deeds, and you will see it on the Day of Judgement. Allah is sufficient as a witness.

E.g. Someone offends you and you are afflicted with a sharp tongue. You are able to reply but you stop yourself from replying. Allah knows and will record this for you in your book of deeds. Only the person who has strong belief in the name of Allah Al-Muhaymin will be able to prevent himself from replying.

E.g. Parents don’t know how difficult it is for youth to protect their chastity, but Allah Al-Muhaymin is aware of the struggle they are going through and will reward them, Zina is not just the act of illegal sexual intercourse, there is Zina of the eyes and Zina of the ears which is difficult for a person to prevent themselves from, especially nowadays.

Side Note: Keep your life good by having good thoughts
As-Sa’di said in his book “How to achieve happiness”: Know that the quality of your life is connected to the quality of your thoughts. If your thoughts bring you benefit in your religion and life, you will live a goodly life. But if your thoughts bring harm to your religion and life, your life will be miserable.

Imam Ahmed advised his son: “O son, intend good. You will remain in good so long as you intend good.

Allah created with the characteristic of thinking which we can never free ourselves from. We are perpetually thinking. Therefore, whenever a thought comes classify it. Ask yourself: Is this a good thought or a bad thought?
If a bad thought passes your mind, seek refuge in Allah from it and do not turn it into a resolution. Once it is turned into a resolution you will be accounted for it and it will be written in your record of evil deeds. The owners of the garden in Surah Al-Qalam intended to take the harvest without giving the poor their rights and it became a resolution. They thought about how to do it and slept with that resolution in their hearts. Because of that, Allah immediately sent a punishment.

If it is a good thought, think of how to practically apply it and resolve to do it, so it will be written as a good deed for you even if you have not done it yet.
