Advice from Hilyat Talibul-'Ilm + The Name of Allah Al-Malik (11/3/17)

Turn Away from the Gatherings of Al-Laghw

Do not stand on the carpet of those who commit evil in their gatherings and tear the veil of manners, pretending to be unaware of that. If you have done that, then your crime against knowledge and its people will be great.

Ibn 'Othaimeen رحمه الله said:
Al-Laghw is of two types: Talk in which there is neither benefit nor harm (i.e. vain talk), and talk in which there is harm (i.e. sin).

As for the first type: It is not appropriate for the mindful person to waste his time in it, because it is a loss.
And as for the second type: It is forbidden upon him to let his time elapse in it, because it is evil and forbidden.

و المؤلف كأنه حمل الترجمة على المعنى الثاني و هو اللغو المحرم، و لا شك أن المجالس التي تشتمل على المحرم لا يجوز للإنسان أن يجلس فيها لأن الله تعالى يقول: {وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ ۚ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا مِّثْلُهُمْ ۗ}
It is as if the Author carries the interpretation upon the second meaning, and that is talk which is forbidden. It is undoubtedly forbidden for a person to sit in a gathering which comprises of the Haraam, because of the statement of Allah in Surah An-Nisa [4:140]: "And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Quran) that when you hear the Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them"

Whoever sits in a gathering where there is Munkar (evil), it is obligatory for him to prevent the Munkar. If they leave it, then that is what is sought. However, if they do not become upright, and insist on their evil, it becomes obligatory for him to leave. This is contrary to what many of the general public mistakenly do; they say that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever is unable to (change the Munkar with his hand or tongue) then with his heart", so they say: 'I hate this Munkar in my heart', whilst they continue to sit with its people.

So it is said to such a person: If you truly hated it, you would have not sat with them, because it is not possible for a human to sit upon what he hates, unless he is forced to. As for hating something and sitting with it by choice, then your claim that you hate it is incorrect.

And his saying: {If you have done that, then your crime against knowledge and its people is great}
As for his crime against himself, this is clear, for if we see a student of knowledge sitting in an assembly of amusement, vain talk, and evil, then his crime against himself is apparent and great. And it becomes a crime against knowledge and its people, because people will say: These are students of knowledge, this is the result of knowledge, and the like. So he accordingly transgresses against himself and others.

The Name of Allah Al-Malik (الملك)

#6 - Since Allah is Al-Malik, He should be obeyed.
In the Story of the Cow in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:67]:
"And (remember) when Musa (Moses) said to his people: "Verily, Allah commands you that you slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you make fun of us?" He said, "I take Allah's Refuge from being among Al-Jahilun (the ignorants or the foolish)."

This event occurred after Bani Israeel were rescued by Allah and they crossed the sea and were safe in the land. The story begins with Musa عليه السلام commanding them to slaughter a cow, without the reason being mentioned. This tells you that:

1) Whenever you relate an event or any story, you should start with the most important matter. Why Allah commanded them to slaughter the cow is not important, what is important is that Allah commanded them to slaughter a cow.

Allah had ordered them to slaughter a cow because a man was killed, and Bani Israeel disputed as to who the killer was. They went to Musa عليه السلام to solve their dispute. Allah commanded Musa عليه السلام to tell them to slaughter a cow.

"إن الله يأمركم" - Verily Allah commands you
Musa عليه السلام said: Allah is commanding you. Not me; not Musa عليه السلام.

And yet they replied:
"آتتخذنا هزوا" - Do you make fun of us?
They showed stubbornness and lagged behind from obeying the command of Allah. If they were truly seeking the truth, they would have immediately obeyed. But this indicates that they were not truthful.

Also, they tried to understand the command of Allah with their logic. If it was acceptable to their logic, they would do it. If it was not, they would not do it.

What was the wisdom behind commanding them to slaughter a cow and not any other cattle? Because as soon as Bani Israeel were saved by Allah, they worshipped the calf. Allah wanted to pluck out that Aqeedah from the heart of Bani Israeel; to tell them that the cow is for slaughtering, not for worshipping.
It is also said that Pharoah would wear a necklace with the image of a calf, and this was their Aqeedah which they adopted from Pharoah, although Pharoah was killing and persecuting them. This is the state of people who feel inferior; they imitate their superiors. Like the Muslim youth. The enemies of Islam attack and abuse Islam, and the Muslim youth imitate the disbelievers, even though the enemies of Islam hate us.

Bani Israeel and their like of the hypocrites and disbelievers look at the command of Allah as:
a) Opposing their logic
b) Causing them to degress, not progress
c) Having no worldly benefit for them. If there is worldly benefit, they obey. If there is no worldly benefit, they disobey.

The true believers and the followers of the Messengers are from the group of "سمعنا و أطعنا" (we hear and we obey), whereas the disbelievers and the hypocrites are from the group of "أتتخذنا هزوا" (do you make fun of us?). Surah Al-Baqarah, from its beginning to end, is about these two groups of people. Which group are you from?

2) When Bani Israeel did not obey the command of Allah, it was due to their bad thinking about Allah (سوء الظن بالله) and His Messenger, Musa عليه السلام.
Many of those who do not obey the command of Allah have this problem - bad thinking about Allah, which is a result of their lack of knowledge about Allah. They do not know that Allah is All-Wise when He commands something, even if their minds cannot comprehend the wisdom.

"قال أعوذ بالله أن أكون من الجاهلين' - I seek refuge with Allah from being one of the ignorant
3) Mocking or joking with regards to religious matters is something very grievous;- it is a type of ignorance. This is why Musa عليه السلام sought refuge with Allah. Whenever we hear people making fun of the Religion of Allah, we should seek refuge with Allah.

4) Ignorance is one of the ugliest descriptions which one should not be attributed with.
We should seek knowledge.

Verse 68:
"They said, "Call upon your Lord for us that He may make plain to us what it is!" He said, "He says, 'Verily, it is a cow neither too old nor too young, but (it is) between the two conditions', so do what you are commanded."

"قالوا ادع لنا ربك" - They said: Call upon your Lord for us
They said, "Your Lord" as if Allah was only the Lord of Musa عليه السلام and not their Lord as well.

"يُبين لنا ما هي" - that He may make plain to us what it is
Action of Allah
"يُبين" - Allah makes clear
When you go through any dispute or any matter which is unclear, ask Allah by this action first, to make it clear for you.

Bani Israeel showed partial submission here. They are still looking for the reason behind slaughtering the cow.

"إنها بقرة لا فارض و لا بكر عوان بين ذلك" - Verily, it is a cow neither too old nor too young, but it is between the two conditions
Again, Allah intends to pluck out the belief of Bani Israeel in the cow. There was a time when the cow was born, and later it will become old and die. God is not attributed with this description, thus the cow is not deserving of being worshipped. Bani Israeel should have benefited from knowing the age of the cow.

Allah commanded them to slaughter any cow, but they were severe upon themselves. The Religion is easy, but whoever makes it difficult on themselves, Allah will make it difficult for them.

"فافعلوا ما تؤمرون"- So do what you are commanded
This indicates the obligation of adhering to the command of Allah.

Verse 69:
"They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us its colour." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in its colour, pleasing to the beholders.' "

This is one of the favours of Allah upon us. Allah is the One who created the colours in the world; and one of the benefits of colours is that it brings joy to the hearts. Colours have an effect on the heart.

Verse 70:
"They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to make plain to us what it is. Verily to us all cows are alike, And surely, if Allah wills, we will be guided."

"و إنا إن شاء الله لمهتدون" - And surely, if Allah wills, we will be guided
Here, they joined their action to the will of Allah. They either mean:
a) We entrust our affairs to Allah; if Allah wills He will guide us.
b) If we fail, Allah did not will it for us. They wanted to use the will of Allah as an excuse for not carrying out the command.

When you say "إن شاء الله" you should resolve to do the matter. Meaning, whenever you intend to do any matter, you should take the means and put effort, and if Allah wills for you to get it, you will get it, and if He does not will for you to get it, you will not.

Verse 71:
"He [Musa (Moses)] said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to till the soil nor water the fields, sound, having no other colour except bright yellow.' " They said, "Now you have brought the truth." So they slaughtered it though they were near to not doing it"

This is also to tell Bani Israeel that the cow is not for worshipping, it is for sowing seeds and watering the fields. To show them the lowliness of the matter that they worshipped.

"و ما كادوا يفعلون" - Though they were near to not doing it
Bani Israeel were so slow in their obedience to Allah. Even if performing good deeds became easy for them, they showed laziness.

Then Allah mentioned why they were commanded to slaughter the cow:
Verse 72:
"And (remember) when you killed a man and fell into dispute among yourselves as to the crime. But Allah brought forth that which you were hiding."

"والله مخرج ما كنتم تكتمون"
مخرج is a restricted name of Allah.
From this we learn: Do not hide in your heart except what pleases you if Allah brings it forth before the people.
We have to continuously check and inspect our hearts.

Verse 73:
"So We said: "Strike him (the dead man) with a piece of it (the cow)." Thus Allah brings the dead to life and shows you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) so that you may understand."

Actions of Allah
a) "قلنا" - Allah speaks
b) "يحي" - Allah gives life
c) "يريكم" - Allah shows you His signs

One of the supplications of the Salaf was:

اللهم أرنا الحق حقا و أرزقنا اتباعه و أرنا الباطل باطلا و أرزقنا اجتنابه
O Allah, show us the truth as truth and help us follow it, and show us the falsehood as falsehood and help us avoid it.

When you supplicate, invoke Allah with actions He affirmed to Himself in the Qur'an and Sunnah.

When you are in a distressful situation and you do not know the wisdom behind the matter, ask Allah to show you the wisdom, the signs, the way. Use this action of Allah.

E.g. A wife is doing everything and her husband's heart is turned away from her. Later, Allah shows her the wisdom behind the matter she went through. Allah is the One who showed her.
