#14
Drinking Alcohol, even if you do not become intoxicated by it

-> In Surah Al-Baqarah [2:219]:
"They ask you (O Muhammad ﷺ) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit."

Allah gradually revealed the prohibition of alcohol in 3 stages.

"(Be informed) that the first thing that was revealed thereof was a Sura from Al-Mufassal, and in it was mentioned Paradise and the Fire. When the people embraced Islam, the Verses regarding legal and illegal things were revealed. If the first thing to be revealed was: 'Do not drink alcoholic drinks.' people would have said, 'We will never leave alcoholic drinks'." [Al-Bukhari]

-> In Surah Al-Maa'idah [5:90-91]:
"O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al-Ansab, and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan's (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful."
"Shaitan (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from As-Salat (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?"

->
And Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما said, "When the prohibition of alcohol had been revealed, the companions walked to each other and said, 'Alcohol has been prohibited and made equivelant to Shirk'"

->
Narrated by Abdullah Ibn 'Amr that the Prophet ﷺ said,  "Whoever leaves prayer drunk once, it would be as if he possesed the earth and what is on it and he squandered it, and whoever leaves prayer, drunk, four times, it becomes a right to Allah to cause him to drink from Tinatul  Khibal. It was asked, "What is Tinatul Khibal, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He ﷺ said, "The fluids of the people of Jahannam." [Ahmad and Al-Bayhaqi]

The recompense is the same nature of the deed; because they drank alcohol in this life, they will drink the sweat of the people of Hellfire in the next.

#15
Pride, Haughtiness, Vanity, Conceit, and Arrogance

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"No one who has in his heart an atom of pride will enter Paradise." [Muslim]

-> And he ﷺ said:
"There was once a person who walked with pride because of his (fine) mantles. Allah made him sink in the earth and he would go on sinking in it until the Day of Resurrection." [Al-Bukhari]

->
"The arrogant and proud will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection like ants, whom the people will stamp on."

->
And some of the Salaf said: The first sin which Allah was disobeyed by was Pride. Allah said in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:34]: And (remember) when We said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam.". And they prostrated except Iblis (Satan), he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allah).
So whoever has pride regarding the truth like Iblees did, his faith has not benefitted him.

-> How do you know if you have Pride? There are two signs:

"Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people." [Muslim]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Shall I not inform you about the inmates of Hell? It is every violent, impertinent and proud person." [Agreed Upon]

->
Narrated by Ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما that he heard the Prophet ﷺ, "There is no man that is arrogant in his walk and is proud in himself except that He will meet Allah while He is angry with him."

The believers are humble. Allah said regarding them in Surah Al-Furqan [25:63]:

"And the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness."

->
A man ate with his left hand in the presence of Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), whereupon he said, "Eat with your right hand." The man said: "I cannot do that." Thereupon he (the Prophet (ﷺ)) said, "May you not be able to do that." It was pride that prevented him from doing it and he could not raise it (the right hand) up to his mouth afterwards.
[Muslim].

When you hear the truth, always accept it, even if it is something you do not like or against what you are doing. Ask Allah to help you.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The first three to enter Hellfire:  An oppressive leader, a rich person who does not pay Zakat, and a proud poor person"

The poor person does not have anything, he does not have the means to arrogance; this is why the sin is great.

-> The Author رحمه الله ended this part saying:

And the worst form of pride is that of someone who exalts himself over people with his knowledge, and magnifies his merits to himself. The knowledge of such a person is of absolutely no benefit to him. Whoever seeks knowledge for the sake of the Hereafter, his knowledge breaks him,  his heart is humbled, his soul submits, and he is watchful over his soul. He does not slacken regarding it, rather he takes it into account at all times and cultivates it. Were he to neglect it, it would diverge from the right path and destroy him. The one who seeks knowledge to take pride with it or to gain a position in leadership, looking disdainfully at other Muslims, thinking them fools, and contempting them, then this is one of the greatest forms of pride, and no one who has an atom of pride in his heart will enter Paradise. There is no might or power except with Allah.

You need to check yourself from time to time, from situation to situation, if you are committing the sin. It comes and goes. You will know if you are committing the sin through your reaction to situations.

#16
 False Witness

-> Allah said regarding the believers in Surah Al-Furqan [25:72]:
"And those who do not witness falsehood"

-> And He said in Surah Al-Hajj [22:30]:

"So shun the abomination (worshipping) of idol, and shun lying speech (false statements)"

->
The one who falsely witnesses has committed great sins:
First: Lying and Fabrication. Allah said in Surah Ghafir [40:28]: "Verily, Allah guides not one who is a Musrif (a polytheist, or a murderer who shed blood without a right, or those who commit great sins, oppressor, transgressor), a liar!"
And in the Hadeeth:  The believer could develop all sorts of characteristics except treachery and lying.
Secondly: He has oppressed the one he bore witness against as he appropriated his property, honour, and soul.
Thirdly: He has oppressed the one who he bore witness for by bringing unlawful property to him through his witness and thus obligated the Hellfire for him.
Fourthly: He has permitted what Allah has made unlawful for him from property, blood, and honour.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
Allah's Messenger ﷺ said thrice, "Shall I not inform you of the biggest of the great sins? - To join partners in worship with Allah: to be undutiful to one's parents., And I warn you against giving a false statement." And he kept on saying that warning so much so that we said, "Would that he had stopped." [Bukhari]

#17
Sodomy

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever you find doing as the people of Lot did (i.e. homosexuality), kill the one who does it and the one to whom it is done"

-> And it is narrated that he ﷺ said:
"Allah has cursed those who perform the actions of the people of Lot."

#18
Accusing Chaste Women

-> Allah said in Surah an-Nur [24:23]:

"Verily, those who accuse chaste women, who never even think of anything touching their chastity and are good believers, are cursed in this life and in the Hereafter, and for them will be a great torment,"

-> There is a punishment for the one who accuses a chaste woman. Allah says in Surah an-Nur [24:4-5]:

"And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty stripes, and reject their testimony forever, they indeed are the Fasiqun (liars, rebellious, disobedient to Allah)."
"Except those who repent thereafter and do righteous deeds, (for such) verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

-> The Prophet ﷺ said

"Avoid the seven destructive things." And from among them, he mentioned slandering chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers. [Agreed Upon]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said
"A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands the Muslims are safe" [Agreed Upon]

->
Abu Huraira reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, a woman prays in the night, fasts in the day, does many deeds and gives charity, yet she harms her neighbors with her tongue.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There is no good in her. She is among the people of Hellfire.” [Adab Al-Mufrad #117, Authenticated by Al-Albani]

Beware of your tongue. Do not accuse anyone of something you do not know.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said to Muadh رضي الله عنه:

May your mother grieve your loss O Mu'adh! Are the people tossed into the Fire upon their noses, except because of what their tongues have wrought. [At-Tirmithi]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
 "He who accuses his slave of Zina will receive the punishment (Hadd) of slander on the Day of Resurrection, unless the accusation of Zina was true." [Agreed Upon]

You cannot accuse anyone without having four witnesses, which is almost impossible.

->

As for whoever accuses Aaisha رضي الله عنها of adultery, after Allah revealed her innocence from the Heavens, he is a Kafir who has denied the Qur'an and thus should be killed.

Whoever accused Aisha رضي الله عنها of adultery should be killed, because he has disbelieved in the Qur'an. Allah revealed eighteen verses in Surah an-Nur proving her innocence.

#19
Stealing from the Booty or from the Muslim Treasury or Zakat

-> Even at your work. Regardless if you are working in a school, office, you are not allowed to take any property without their permission.

-> Allah said in Surah Aal-Imran [3:161]:
"It is not for any Prophet to take illegally a part of booty (Ghulul), and whosoever deceives his companions as regards the booty, he shall bring forth on the Day of Resurrection that which he took (illegally)."

->
The Prophet (ﷺ) employed a man from the tribe of Al-Azd named Ibn Lutbiyyah as collector of Zakat. When the employee returned (with the collections) he said: "(O Prophet (ﷺ)!) This is for you and this is mine because it was presented to me as gift." Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) rose to the pulpit and praised Allah and extolled Him. Then he said, "I employ a man to do a job and he comes and says: 'This is for you and this has been presented to me as gift'? Why did he not remain in the house of his father or the house of his mother and see whether gifts will be given to him or not? By Allah in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, if any one of you took anything wrongfully, he will bring it on the Day of Resurrection, carrying it on (his back), I will not recognize anyone of you, on the Day of Resurrection with a grunting camel, or a bellowing cow, or a bleating ewe." Then he raised his hands till we could see the whiteness of his armpits. Then he said thrice, ''O Allah ! have I conveyed (Your Commandments)". [Agreed Upon]

There are teachers who receive presents from students. It is not permissible for the teacher to take any gift, so long as she is teaching the student. As the Prophet ﷺ said, "Why did he not remain in the house of his father or the house of his mother and see whether gifts will be given to him or not?".

->
When we conquered Khaibar, we gained neither gold nor silver as booty, but we gained cows, camels, goods and gardens. Then we departed with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to the valley of Al-Qira, and at that time Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had a slave called Mid`am who had been presented to him by one of Banu Ad-Dibbab. While the slave was dismounting the saddle of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) an arrow the thrower of which was unknown, came and hit him. The people said, "Congratulations to him for the martyrdom." Allah's Apostle said, "No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, the sheet (of cloth) which he had taken (illegally) on the day of Khaibar from the booty before the distribution of the booty, has become a flame of Fire burning him. [Al-Bukhari]

->
The Prophet ﷺ, and Abu Bakr, and Umar رضي الله عنهما used to burn what the one who stole from the booty took and beat him.

->
Abdullah Ibn `Abdullah Ibn ' Amr related, "There was a man who looked after the family and the belongings of the Prophet was called "Karkarah." The man died and Allah's apostle said," He is in the Hell fire. The people then went to look at him and found in his place a cloak he has stolen from the war booty.”

->
In this chapter are many Hadiths, some of which have come under the chapter of Oppression.
And Oppression is of three types:
Firstly: To eat money unjustly
Secondly: Oppression to the slaves by killing, hitting, breaking, and injuring
Thirdly: Oppression to the slaves by abusing, cursing, reviving, and defaming

->
Delivering the sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage on the day of Sacrifice at Mina, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Verily your blood, your property and your honour are as sacred and inviolable as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours and in this town of yours. Verily! I have conveyed this message to you." [Agreed Upon]

->
Allah does not accept Salah without purification, nor charity from Ghulul (That which is taken from the spoils of war prior to their distribution). [An-Nasaa'i]

->
A man had stolen from the booty of Khaibar, so the Prophet ﷺ refused to pray funeral prayer over him and said, "Your companion has stolen in the way of Allah". We then searched his belongings and found some of the Jewish beads that were not worth more than two dirhams" [Abu Dawud and an-Nasaa'i]

->
Imam Ahmad رحمه الله said: We do not know of the Prophet ﷺ leaving prayer over anyone except for the one who stole from the booty and the one who committed suicide.

#20
Oppression by taking People's Money Unjustly

-> In Surah Al-Baqarah [2:188]:
"And eat up not one another's property unjustly (in any illegal way e.g. stealing, robbing, deceiving, etc.), nor give bribery to the rulers (judges before presenting your cases) that you may knowingly eat up a part of the property of others sinfully."

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Oppression will turn into darkness on the Day of Resurrection.” [Agreed Upon]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever usurps unlawfully even a hand span of land a collar measuring seven times (this) land will be placed around his neck on the Day of Resurrection"

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Delay in payment by a rich man is injustice"

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Allah obligates the (Hell) Fire for the one who usurps the rights of a believer by taking a false oath." One man asked: "O Messenger of Allah! Even if it should be for an insignificant thing?" He said, "Even if it be a stick of the Arak tree (i.e., the tree from which Miswak sticks are taken)". [Muslim]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whosoever among you is appointed by us to a position and he conceals from us even a needle or less, it will amount to Ghulool and he will be called upon to restore it on the Day of Resurrection" [Muslim]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
A man said, "If I fight in the cause of Allah with patience and seeking reward,facing the enemy and not running away, do you think that Allah will forgive my sins?' He said: 'Yes, except for debt." [Muslim]

#21
Stealing

-> Allah said in Surah Al-Maa'idah [5:38]:

"Cut off (from the wrist joint) the (right) hand of the thief, male or female, as a recompense for that which they committed, a punishment by way of example from Allah. And Allah is All-Powerful, All-Wise."

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
Allah curses the thief who steals a rope and has his hand cut off. [Agreed Upon]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"If Fatimah stole, I would cut off her hand." [An-Nasaa'i]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The one who commits an illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer at the time of committing illegal sexual intercourse and a thief is not a believer at the time of committing theft. Yet, (the gate of) repentance is open thereafter." [Al-Bukhari]

Faith will exit his heart until he stops committing the sin.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Verily they are only four: To not associate partners with Allah in the least, and to not kill a soul which Allah has made forbidden except with a right, and to not fornicate, and to not steal"

I.e. If you do not commit these sins, you will be in safety.

And the repentance of a thief will not benefit him except if he returns what he stole. If he is bankrupt, he can release himself from the obligation by asking someone who has money to do so.

#22
Highway Robbery

-> In Surah Al-Maa'idah [5:33]:
"The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter."

#23
Taking a False Oath

This is when a person swears by Allah and is lying.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"(Of the) major sins are: to ascribe partners to Allah, disobey parents, murder someone, and to take a false oath (intentionally)". [Al-Bukhari]

->
And اليمين الغموس is when a person deliberately lies (whilst swearing by Allah). It is called غموسا because it immerses the one swearing in sin.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
Once someone said: 'By Allah! Allah will not forgive such and such (a person).' Thereupon Allah, the Exalted and the Glorious, said: 'Who is he who takes an oath in My Name that I will not grant pardon to so-and-so? I have granted pardon to so-and-so and rendered your good deeds fruitless."' [Muslim]

You are not a judge over the people, just look at yourself. If you look at people, look at them as better than you.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"There are three whom Allah will not look at on the Day of Judgement, nor will He purify them, and theirs is a painful punishment: "The  one whose Izar hangs (below the ankles), the one who reminds others of his favours, and the one who promotes his merchandise with false oath." [Muslim]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever swears by other than Allah has disbelieved"
And in another wording, "has committed Shirk"

If you swear by Allah while lying, it is a major sin. If you swear by other than Allah while telling the truth, it is Shirk. That's why Ibn Masoud رضي الله عنه said: To swear by Allah while lying is more loved to me than to swear by other than Him while speaking the truth. [At-Tabaraani]. Because Allah forgives major sins, but He will not forgive Shirk, if a person dies upon it.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
 "He who takes an oath and involuntarily says: 'By Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza' should at once affirm: 'La ilaha illallah (there is no true god except Allah)" [Agreed Upon]

You expiate Shirk with Tawheed. Their tongues were used to swearing by Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, so the Prophet ﷺ reminded them of this.
