The Book of Major Sins Part 3 - (16/7/2017)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
22nd Shawwaal 1438

The first step in avoiding the major sins is to learn about them, then to ask Allah to protect you from them. You may discover that you have committed a major sin in the past while you did not know - and this is out of the mercy of Allah; He reminds you of a sin in order that you repent from it. And the major sins require repentance, otherwise they will cause you to be punished in Hellfire.

If you committed a major sin in the past which no one knows about and requires a Hadd punishment, what should you do? You should first repent. Repentance has three requirements:
1) To regret and feel bad for committing the sin
2) To quit the sin
3) To have the intention to not commit it in the future
If it is related to the rights of people, there is a fourth requirement:
4) To return the right of the person back to them
E.g. You backbit someone. This does not mean you go to the person you backbit and tell her about what you did, because in doing so you will increase hatred between the two of you. Instead, ask forgiveness for her.

When you wash your clothes, it sometimes leaves traces. The more you wash, the more the stains will be removed. Similarly, the sins. The more you repent for a sin, the more its stain will be removed. If your repentance is truthful, it will reach a point where Allah will exchange that sin with a good deed in its place.

#7
Eating Riba (Usury)

-> Allah said in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:278-279]:

"O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah and give up what remains (due to you) from Riba (usury) (from now onward), if you are (really) believers."
"And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger but if you repent, you shall have your capital sums. Deal not unjustly (by asking more than your capital sums), and you shall not be dealt with unjustly (by receiving less than your capital sums)."

No one can bear fighting Allah.

-> Allah described the state of those who eat Riba on the Day of Judgement, in Surah Al-Baqarah [2:275]:

"Those who eat Riba (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaitan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: "Trading is only like Riba (usury)," whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Riba (usury) shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allah (to judge); but whoever returns [to Riba (usury)], such are the dwellers of the Fire - they will abide therein."

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
 "Avoid the seven destructive things." It was asked: (by those present): "What are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Associating anyone or anything with Allah in worship; practising sorcery, killing of someone without a just cause whom Allah has forbidden, devouring the property of an orphan, eating of usury, fleeing from the battlefield and slandering chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers."
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
May Allah curse the one who accepts Ar-Riba (the usury) and the one who pays it. [Muslim].

The narration in At-Tirmidhi adds: And the two persons who stand witness to it and the one who records it.

-> Do not think that usury is the only way. If you have Taqwa, Allah will open a door for you. Allah said in Surah Talaq [65:2-3]:

وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا
"And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out"

-> In a Hadith:
Then he (ﷺ) mentioned [the case] of a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying “O Lord! O Lord!,” while his food is haram (unlawful), his drink is haram, his clothing is haram, and he has been nourished with haram, so how can [his supplication] be answered? [Muslim]

It is not just a matter of how much you eat, but what you are eating; is it lawful or unlawful?

#8
Eating the Wealth of an Orphan Unjustly

-> Allah said Surah an-Nisa [4:10]:
"Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, they eat up only a fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the blazing Fire!"

-> Allah said in Surah Al-An'am [6:152]:
"And come not near to the orphan's property, except to improve it,"

Allah said do not come near it. You are responsible and a guardian over the Orphan and his money, you should therefore be truthful and sincere with him.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
 "Avoid the 7 destructive sins" and mentioned eating the wealth of the orphan (unjustly) from among them.

->

There is blame on every guardian of an orphan who is poor, if he eats with Ma'roof. And what is above Ma'roof is unlawful. And Ma'roof goes back to what is known to people (as Ma'roof), and the believer is free from impure property.

If the guardian is poor and is responsible over the money of the orphan, he can eat what suffices him - but not more.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
 "I and the one who looks after an orphan will be like this in Paradise," showing his middle and index fingers and separating them. [Al-Bukhari]

Allah honoured us with Islam. In our community, when we find a weak person, we do not use it as an opportunity to steal his money and do bad to him, but we help him and give his money to him.

Use the wealth of the orphan like you use your money, or your sons money.

#9
Lying regarding the Prophet ﷺ

->
Lying regarding the Prophet ﷺ is Kufr which takes one out of the Religion, and there is no doubt that deliberately lying about the Prophet ﷺ in making lawful the unlawful or making the unlawful lawful is pure Kufr. And the matter of lying about him is only regarding what is equal to that.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Ascribing false things to me is not like ascribing false things to anyone else. Whosoever tells a lie against me intentionally then surely let him occupy his seat in Hell-Fire." [Al-Bukhari]

-> And he ﷺ said:
 "Whoever (intentionally) ascribes to me what I have not said then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire." [Al-Bukhari]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever narrates a Hadith from me thinking it to be false, then he is one of the two liars." [Ibn Majah]

#10
Breaking ones fast in Ramadan without an Excuse nor a Concession

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever breaks the fast during Ramadan without an excuse nor an allowance, then if he fasted for all time, his fasting would not make up for it." [Da'eef]

A رخصة (Concession) is either due to sickness or travel. An عذر (Excuse) would be having your period.

-> In another Hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said:
The five daily (prescribed) Salat, and Friday (prayer) to the next Friday (prayer), and the fasting of Ramadan to the next Ramadan, is expiation of the sins committed in between them, so long as major sins are avoided. [Muslim]

This is because you have to repent from the major sins, it is not enough to do good deeds hoping that it will expiate them. And fasting in Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam - if you did not fast Ramadan you have committed a major sin.

The Author رحمه الله also talked about those who fast but commit sins while they fast:
-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
"If one does not eschew lies and false conduct, Allah has no need that he should abstain from his food and his drink." [
Al-Bukhari]

There are those who break their fast in Ramadan - they are committing a major sin for which they have to repent, and there are those who fast, but still commit sins. This will reduce the reward of their fast. The reward of fasting is not the same; the more you remember Allah, the more you will be rewarded.

#11
Fleeing from the Battlefield

-> In Surah Al-Anfal [8:16]:
"And whoever turns his back to them on such a day - unless it be a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own), - he indeed has drawn upon himself wrath from Allah. And his abode is Hell, and worst indeed is that destination!"

-> The Prophet ﷺ said:
 "Avoid the seven destructive things." And he mentioned fleeing from the battlefield as one of them.
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Why is it a major sin? In the Battlefield, the Muslims need to be firm and maintain the courage to fight. If one of them flees, it will cause the rest of them to have fear and lose hope.

#12
Zina - and some of it is a greater sin than others

-> In Surah Al-Isra'a [17:32]:
"And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fahishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)], and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah forgives him)."

Zina is of so many levels; according to the place, the time, the one who commits it.
E.g. Place: The one who commits adultery in Makkah is not the same as the one who commits it elsewhere,
Time: Comitting adultery in the day of Ramadan is not like committing it at any other time.
The One who Commits it: The Prophet ﷺ said in a Hadith:

"There are three (types of) people to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, nor look at them, and they will have a painful punishment. These are: An aged man who commits Zina (illicit sexual act), a ruler who lies, and a proud poor person." [Muslim]

The desire of an old man is weak, therefore he will be in a greater sin than the younger man.

->

The Prophet ﷺ was asked "What is the greatest sin in the Sight of Allah?" He said, "That you set up a rival unto Allah though He Alone created you." I said, "That is indeed a great sin." Then asked, "What is next?" He said, "To kill your son lest he should share your food with you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor." [Bukhari]

You are not feeding your children, Allah is the One sustaining you and your children. Some think that one, two, or three children are enough because they cannot afford more. The One who is feeding you and your children is Allah.

You are committing two sins: Adultery and breaking ties with your neighbor.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
The one who commits an illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer at the time of committing illegal sexual intercourse and a thief is not a believer at the time of committing theft and a drinker of alcoholic drink is not a believer at the time of drinking. [Bukhari]

-> In another Hadith,
“Whoever fornicates or drinks wine, Allah takes his faith from him as a man takes a shirt off over his head.” [At-Tirmithi]

Do not feel secure from committing these sins. Ask Allah to guard you and your children. Do not rely on yourself.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"The sanctity of the wives of Mujahids is like the sanctity of their mothers for those who sit at home (i. e do not go out for Jihad). Anyone who stays behind looking after the family of a Mujahid and betrays his trust will be made to stand on the Day of judgment before the Mujahid who will take away from his meritorious deeds whatever he likes. So what do you think (will he leave anything)?" [Muslim]

If a man goes for Jihad and entrusts his wife and children to a man who betrays him and commits adultery with his wife, this Mujahid will stand in front of him and take whatever he wishes of his deeds. And do you think he will leave a good deed behind?

->
And the worst Zina: Zina with your mother, or sister, or the wife of your father, or with any of your Maharim.
"Whoever has intercourse with a Mahram relative, kill him" [Ibn Majah]

Committing adultery with the Maharim (those who are forbidden for you to marry) is more awful that committing adultery with any other person.

The punishment of adultery differs depending on if you are married or unmarried, however in this Hadith, the order is to kill the person regardless if he is married or unmarried.

->
The Prophet ﷺ ordered a man who married his fathers wife to be killed and 1/5th of his money to be taken.

Do not open the gates to this sin. The Prophet ﷺ said,
الْحَمْوُ الْمَوْتُ
"The brother in law is death"  [Al-Bukhari]

He is always in the house, coming in and out, and the Shaytan is there all the time. We should teach our children not to sit together with non-Mahrams, even if they are their cousins.

#13

A Cheating, Oppressing, Tyrant Ruler

-> The Ruler should be truthful with his people and deal with his people in a good way. In Surah ash-Shura [42:42]:

"The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and wrongly rebel in the earth, for such there will be a painful torment."

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,

"He who cheats us is not of us." [Muslim]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,

"Oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection" [Muslim]

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"Whoever Allah has given the authority of ruling some people and he does not look after them in an honest manner, Allah will forbid Paradise for him." [Bukhari]

-> The ruler is not only the president or minister. It can be a man to his wife, or the wife to her children. The Prophet ﷺ said,
"All of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects. The ruler is a guardian of his subjects, the man is a guardian of his family, the woman is a guardian and is responsible for her husband's house and his offspring; and so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects." [Agreed Upon]

There are women who wake up for Fajr but do not wake their children. You are responsible for them.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
There is no people among whom sins are committed when they are stronger and of a higher status (i.e. they have the power and ability to stop the sinners) and they do not change them, but Allah will send His punishment upon them all. [Ibn Majah]

You should change evil, with your hand, if you cannot your tongue, and the least level is your heart. We may pass by a place which has music, and because we are used to it, we do not have the least إنكار (rejection) in our hearts. And the one who does not have إنكار in his heart does not have an atom of faith in his heart.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,

"Nay, by Allah, you either enjoin good and forbid evil and catch hold of the hand of the oppressor and persuade him to act justly and stick to the truth, or, Allah will involve the hearts of some of you with the hearts of others and will curse you as He had cursed them". ("As he cursed them" I.e. Bani Israeel on the tongues of Dawud and Eesa Ibn Maryam عليهما السلام). [Abu Dawoud and At-Tirmithi]

Allah cursed Bani Israeel because they did not change the Munkar. You are responsible for the Munkar committed by those under you.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"If anyone introduces in our matter something which does not belong to it, will be rejected" [Agreed Upon]

Innovation is one of the Munkar you have to forbid.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"He who is not merciful to others, will not be treated mercifully." [Bukhari]

You have to forbid the Munkar in a merciful way. Before you teach, you should be merciful, then people will listen to you.

-> The opposite is the just ruler, whom Allah will shade on the Day of Judgement. The Prophet ﷺ said:

[The meaning of these words are found in the following Hadith]: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Seven people Allah will give them His Shade on the Day when there would be no shade but the Shade of His Throne (i.e., on the Day of Resurrection): And they are: A just ruler...." [Agreed Upon]

And he said,
"The just will be seated upon pulpits of light; Those who are fair with regards to their judgement and their family and those who are under them." [Muslim]

->
And he ﷺ said to Muadh when he sent him to Yemen, "... refrain from picking up (as a share of Zakat) the best of their wealth. Beware of the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah". [Agreed Upon]

If the ruler is unjust, the people under him will invoke against him, and their invocation will be accepted, even if they are disbelievers.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"There are three (types of) people to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection....." And he mentioned a ruler who lies from among them. [Muslim]

The liar lies because he is afraid of something, but the King cannot be harmed, yet he lies - which is why he deserves this punishment.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"You will covet for getting a position of authority, but it will be a cause of humiliation and remorse on the Day of Resurrection." [Bukhari]

Do not be keen to have authority over people, you will regret it on the Day of Judgement if you are not just.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"We do not assign the authority of ruling to those who ask for it, nor to those who are keen to have it." [Al-Bukhari]

The one who asks for authority wants and is keen for it, this is why it is not given to him.

-> The Prophet ﷺ said,
"Three supplications are answered without doubt. The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveller, and the supplication of the parent for his son." [At-Tirmithi]

The Author رحمه الله ended with this to remind the one in authority to beware of the supplication of the one whom he is oppressing under him.
