The Description of Paradise in the Book of Allah Part 2 - (21/5/17)

25-8-1438

The Prophet ﷺ said:
There are two joys for the fasting person: the joy when he breaks his fast, and the joy when he meets his Lord.
[At-Tirmithi]

فرح (joy) is an act of worship, an عبادة, which the believers should feel when they break their fast. For what reason is the believer happy?

Shaikh Ibn 'Othaimeen رحمه الله said that his pleasure when he breaks his fast is from two aspects:
1) That he has carried out the command of Allah and successfully completed the obligation enjoined upon him by Allah. How many a person in the graveyard wishes to fast just one day for the sake of Allah and yet he is unable to! The believer is happy that Allah bestowed this favour upon him; that He guided him to complete the fast of that day. This is an important act of worship we should practice at the time of breaking the fast.

2) Also, he feels joyful because Allah has made lawful for him what conforms with his nature of food, drinks, and sexual relations with his spouse, after they were forbidden for him.

Pause and reflect; what truly brings you joy in this life and what saddens you? Are you only happy when you attain worldly gain? - When you get a gift from someone or when you attain something you desire? Or do you rejoice when you finish Salaat in the proper way, when you complete your fast in the proper way?
Ponder over the moments of joy in your life. Why are you happy?
Allah says in Surat Yunus [10:58]:

"Say: "In the Bounty of Allah, and in His Mercy (i.e. Islam and the Quran); -therein let them rejoice." That is better than what (the wealth) they amass."

This is evidence that فرح is an act of worship.

Everything other than acts of worship, faith, Qur'an, Islam, knowledge, etc. is considered "مما يجمعون" (what they amass)
You should rejoice with فضل الله و رحمته; when you learn a verse, when you memorize Qur'an, when you learn a supplication, when Allah guided you to fast one day, to give in charity, etc.

This does not mean that the believers call others to sadness, grief, distress, unhappiness. The believers are always cheerful. They feel happy when they receive money, but so that they can give it in charity. They think of the hereafter, even when they receive something worldly. This is what makes them happy; this is what they are concerned about. They do not become happy because they get a gift, and sad if they lose out on it. The Dunya is the farm of the Hereafter; we plant here, and reap there. This is how the believers look at this world.
They become sad when they commit a sin, when they do wrong, when they miss a fast of one day, when they oversleep past Tahajjud, etc. They are busy with the hereafter.

Our joy should be directed to what Allah loves; فضل الله و رحمته (the bounty of Allah and His mercy)

-----------

The Prophet ﷺ said:

When Ramadan begins, the gates of Jannah are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

This opening and closing is a true opening and closing. But who feels the opening of the gates of Paradise and the closing of the gates of Hell? Only the believers.

What do you know about the gates of Paradise? We may know that they are eight gates and each gate is for a specific deed (e.g. There is a gate for Salaat, a gate for Fasting, a gate for Jihad, and so on). People who perform all the deeds will be called from all the gates.

The Prophet ﷺ said in a Hadith narrated by Sahl bin Sa'd

Seventy thousand or seven hundred thousand of my followers will enter Paradise. (Abu Hazim, the sub-narrator, is not sure as to which of the two numbers is correct.) They will be holding on to each other, the first will not entering the last one does, their faces like the moon on a full moon night. [Al-Bukhari #6554]

This Hadith indicates that the gates of Paradise are great and huge, and we believe that Paradise has 8 gates, and that on the night of Ramadan they will all be opened.

This gates are not just opened in Ramadan; they are opened every day for you, if you perfect your Wudhu and say (as mentioned in the following Hadith):

Whoever performs Wudu, making Wudu well, then says:

(Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lahu, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan-abduhu wa rasuluhu, Allahummajalni minat tawwabin, waj'alni minal mutatahhirin)

I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, there are no partners for Him. And I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves.'

Then eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, that may enter by whichever of them wishes. [At-Tirmithi]

What does the gates of Paradise being opened for the person mean? Ibn Othaimeen رحمه الله said that it implies that Allah will make easy for the person all the deeds which make him enter the gates of Paradise.
i.e. Allah will make Salaat easy for him to enter the gate of Salaat. He will make fasting easy for him, to enter the gate of fasting, etc. so that he will enter from whichever gate he wishes.

We should say the Dua with a heedful heart. After you purify your body with Wudhu, you purify your heart with Tawheed (by saying the aformentioned supplication).

Those who enter the gates of Paradise will have faces like the moon on a full moon night (I.e. bright).
The Prophet ﷺ is the first whom the gates of Paradise will be opened for, then the rest of the Prophets will follow him, and his nation will be the first nation to enter Paradise, and from among this nation will be the 70,000 who enter Paradise without reckoning. There are other Hadiths which mention what they did to deserve this honour:

Seventy thousand men of my Ummah would enter Paradise without rendering account. They (the companions of the Prophet) said: Who would be those, Messenger of Allah? He ﷺ said: They would be those who neither seek Ruqya, not take omens, nor do they cauterise, but they repose their trust in their Lord. [Muslim]

What made them reach the state where they only rely on Allah and do not ask people to make Ruqya on them, nor believe in omens, nor cauterize? Because they perfected their Tawheed. They perfected their faith. This is why their hearts did not turn to anyone except Allah, so Allah honoured them on the Day of Judgement.

In Jannah there are Jenan (many gardens). And these gardens are of different degrees, according to how much the person has fulfilled of his faith and Tawheed.

Allah called Jannah many different names in the Qur'an. And whenever something has many names, it indicates its greatness. Of the names are:
#1 - دار السلام
When the People of Paradise enter Paradise, they will say, as mentioned in Surah Fatir [35:34-35]:

"And they will say: "All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has removed from us (all) grief. Verily, our Lord is indeed OftForgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense)."

"Who, out of His Grace, has lodged us in a home that will last forever; there, toil will touch us not, nor weariness will touch us."

They use the two names of Allah "غفور شكور" (Oft-Forgiving, Appreciative). It was because Allah dealt with them with these two names that they entered Paradise; دار المقامة.
What did they do in this life which made them deserve that? In Verses 29-30:

"Verily, those who recite the Book of Allah (this Quran), and perform AsSalat (IqamatasSalat), and spend (in charity) out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for a (sure) tradegain that will never perish."

They recited the Qur'an, understood and pondered over its meaning, acted upon it, did not precede the statement of anyone over the statement of Allah.

They established the prayer. Allah particularized the prayer to emphasize its importance. Prayer is the scale by which you measure your faith, it is light in the face of the believer, and a pillar of faith.

They spent from what Allah provided them in secret and in open.

"يرجون تجارة لن تبور"
When they did that, they hoped for a trade which never perishes. A تجارة with Allah is by doing these deeds sincerely for Allah's sake.

How did Allah deal with them? In Verse 30:

"That He may pay them their wages in full, and give them (even) more, out of His Grace. Verily! He is OftForgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense)."

"إنه غفور شكور"

"ليوفيهم أجورهم" (That He may pay them their wages in full) - Because Allah is غفور, He forgave the deficiencies and shortcomings in their acts of worship and gave them the full reward. It is as if they perfected their prayer, fasting, etc.

"و يزيدهم من فضله" (and give them even more, out of His grace) - Allah is also شكور. He did not only forgive them their shortcomings and give them the full reward, but He multiplied the reward.

Our prayer is not 100% perfect. Because Allah is غفور شكور, He will forgive our shortcomings and give us the full reward, as if we had perfected our prayer. And He will not just do that, He will multiply the reward of the prayer we had performed. Therefore, whenever you do a good deed in your life, always follow it with seeking forgiveness, hoping that Allah will patch the deficiencies in it.

This is in the Dunya. Then, in Verse 34, the believers enter Paradise and say:

"And they will say: "All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has removed from us (all) grief. Verily, our Lord is indeed OftForgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense)."

They entered Paradise because Allah dealt with them with His forgiveness and appreciation, and now, when they enter Paradise they see the effect of it.
In Verse 35:

"Who, out of His Grace, has lodged us in a home that will last forever; there, toil will touch us not, nor weariness will touch us."

As-Sa'di رحمه الله said:

Dar al-Muqama is the Home of permanent residency. It is the abode which one desires to stay in forever because of its abundant good and successive pleasures and removal of disturbances.

{out of His Grace} It is by Allah's grace upon us, not by our deeds. Had it not been for His Grace, we would not have reached what we did.

{Neither fatigue touches us therein, nor weariness of mind} because there is no tiredness in body nor heart.
They do not sleep in Paradise because the benefit of sleep is to remove tiredness and attain rest and the people of Jannah are opposite to that, and because sleep is minor death and the people of Paradise do not die.

Allah said in Surat an-Najm [53:14-15]:

"Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)],"

"Near it is the Paradise of Abode."

The Prophet ﷺ saw Jibreel عليه السلام in his real form for the second time at سدرة المنتهى in the eve of al-Mi'raj.
As-Sa'di رحمه الله said in Tayseer al-Kareem:

{عند سدرة المنتهى} و هي شجرة عظيمة جدا، فوق السّماء السابعة، سميت سدرة المنتهى لأنه ينتهي إليه ما يعرج من الأرض و ينزل إليها ما ينزل من الله من الوحي و غيره أو لانتهاء علم الخلق إليها أي: لكونها فوق السماوات ر الأرض فهي المنتهى في علوها أو لغير ذالك. والله أعلم

It is a very great tree above the seven heavens. It is called Sidrat al-Muntaha because what ascends from the earth ends there, and what descends from Allah of revelation and other than it descends there. Or, the knowledge of the creation ends at it.
And Allah knows best.

The Prophet ﷺ saw Jibreel in that place, which is the place of the most pure, beautiful souls, which no Shaytan comes near to nor others from the filthy souls.

At that tree is {Jannatul Ma'wa} Meaning: The Jannah which consists of every delight, where all wishes end, all wills and intentions desire, and all desires take refuge in. This is evidence that Jannah is in the highest places and above the seven heavens. [End Quote]

So it is the Jannah where the souls of believers reach and reside, and the Jannah the believers yearn for with love and hope, and it is their utmost wish to reach and reside there.

We know that Al-Firdaws is the highest place in Paradise, based on the Hadith:

وَالْفِرْدَوْسُ أَعْلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَأَوْسَطُهَا وَفَوْقَ ذَلِكَ عَرْشُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَمِنْهَا تُفَجَّرُ أَنْهَارُ الْجَنَّةِ فَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُ اللَّهَ فَسَلُوهُ الْفِرْدَوْسَ
Al-Firdaus is the highest of Paradise and its most expansive, and above that is the Throne of Ar-Rahman (the Most Merciful), and from it the rivers of Paradise are made to flow forth. So when you ask Allah, ask Him for Al-Firdaus. [At-Tirmithi]

Another meaning is that Al-Jannah is called Firdaws, based on Surat al-Mu'minoon [23:10-11]:

"These are indeed the inheritors."

"Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever."

Who are they?
The context is about the believing slaves of Allah, their success and happiness, and what they did to achieve that:

1) "قد افلح المؤمنون" - They are believers
They offer prayer with Khushoo' (with submissiveness, understanding what they are reciting, etc.)
They turn away from vain talk
They observe Zakat
5) "والذين هم لفروجهم حافظون" - They safeguard their private parts. They do not commit Zina, and safeguard themselves from everything that will lead to Zina (they protect their eyes, ears, hearts, thoughts).
6) "والذين هم لأماناتهم و عهدهم راعون" - They keep their trusts and promises. The greatest trust is the trust towards Allah. Allah enjoined us many obligatory acts which are considered trusts. They believers fulfill the covenant with Allah and keep the trusts they are entrusted by humans as well.
The carefully maintain their prayers. They offer it in its time, while fulfilling its Pillars, obligatory acts.

Their description began with Salat and ended with Salat. This shows us the importance of prayer with the believers. Allah praised them for two matters regarding their prayers:
1) Khushoo' in their Prayer
2) Maintaining their Prayers

These are those who will inherit Jannat al-Firdaws and abide therein forever.
In the Arabic language, al-Firdaws means gardens with many vine trees. It could refer to Jannah generally, and it could be a name for the highest degree of Paradise.

As-Sa'di رحمه الله said:

Those who are attributed with those attributes are the inheritors; who will inherit Al-Firdaws. Al-Firdaws is the highest part of Jannah, and in the middle of Paradise, and the best of it. This is because the believers were adorned with the highest and most noble attributes. Or the intent is the whole of Paradise, entailing the entrance of all the believers in accordance to their degree and state.

They will abide therein forever. They will neither want to change it, nor will they desire to be removed from it, because it comprises of the perfect, complete, best delight, without any harm or distress.

In Surat al-Kahf [18:107-108]:

"Verily! Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds, shall have the Gardens of Al-Firdaus (the Paradise) for their entertainment."

"Wherein they shall dwell (forever). No desire will they have to be removed therefrom."

What did they do in the Dunya?
They believed (in the oneness of Allah and the articles of faith)
They performed good deeds with their tongue, limbs, and heart.

What did they receive as a reward? "جنات الفردوس"
This confirms the meaning that Al-Firdaws is a name for Jannah, because of the generality of the verse, and because it is mentioned in plural (جنات).

This is mentioned profusely in the Qur'an. For example, in Surah Maryam [19:58-61]:

"Those were they unto whom Allah bestowed His Grace from among the Prophets, of the offspring of Adam, and of those whom We carried (in the ship) with Nuh (Noah), and of the offspring of Ibrahim (Abraham) and Israel and from among those whom We guided and chose. When the Verses of the Most Beneficent (Allah) were recited unto them, they fell down prostrating and weeping."

"Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salat (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salat (prayers) to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times, etc.] and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell."

"Except those who repent and believe (in the Oneness of Allah and His Messenger Muhammad), and work righteousness. Such will enter Paradise and they will not be wronged in aught."

"(They will enter) 'Adn (Eden) Paradise (everlasting Gardens), which the Most Beneficent (Allah) has promised to His slaves in the unseen: Verily! His Promise must come to pass."

"They shall not hear therein (in Paradise) any Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk), but only Salam (salutations of peace). And they will have therein their sustenance, morning and afternoon."

When Allah described Paradise in many verses in the Qur'an, He said that they will not hear any Laghw therein. This means that if you avoid Laghw in the Dunya, your reward will be Paradise, in which there is no Laghw. The recompense is of the same nature as the deed

As-Sa'di رحمه الله said:
Gardens of settlement, there is no turning from it, nor removal from it, nor leaving it, and that is because of its vastness,
and abundant good, joy, and happiness.

عدن in Arabic means خلد (eternal)
I.e. (I settled in a land)
جنات عدن means everlasting Paradise

The believers will abide therein forever and they will never be bored, although it is human nature to want to move and change after staying in one place for a while. This is because the delights of Paradise are renewed everyday. The gardens today are not like the gardens of yesterday. And the gardens of tomorrow are not like the gardens of today. And this renewal is forever. Their joy will never come to an end and they will have nothing to disturb their joy. All these meanings are entailed in the word عدن.

The description of Paradise in a particular Surah is suitable to the theme of that Surah.

Allah says in Surat al-Qamar [54:54-55]:

"Verily, The Muttaqun (pious), will be in the midst of Gardens and Rivers (Paradise)."

"In a seat of truth (i.e. Paradise), near the Omnipotent King (Allah, the All-Blessed, the Most High, the Owner of Majesty and Honour)."

Who deserves مقعد الصدق? The Muttaqeen
They will be in a seat of truth in which there is no lie about its description, in the dwelling of Allah's honour, encompassed by His pleasure, favours, bounties, generosity, and compassion. They will be near the magnificent King, who created everything and measured its destiny. He is able to grant them what they wish and ask for.

At-Tabari and Al-Baghawi  said:
{In a seat of truth} meaning:
في مجلس حق لا لغو فيه و لا تأثيم
In a truthful seat, in which there is no vain nor sinful talk.

Another interpreter said, "They attained that rank by their truthfulness and belief in the Messengers."

Al-Baghawi said:
Allah praised the place (or seat) with truthfulness because no one sits there except the people of truthfulness.

Al-Qurtubi said:
It is a seat of truth in which there is no vain nor sinful talk, and it is Paradise.

Accordingly, مقعد الصدق is either a special seat of truth near Allah the truthful ones sit in when they visit Allah, or it is one of the names of Paradise.

In Surat ad-Dukhan [44:51-52]:

"Verily! The Muttaqun, will be in place of Security (Paradise)."

"Among Gardens and Springs;"

Ibn Katheer رحمه الله said, "Those who
1) Fear Allah
2) and are dutiful to Him in this world
Will be in a place of security in the hereafter (i.e. Paradise) where they will be safe from death; and the fear of leaving it; and from every kind of worry, grief, terror, and exhaustion; and from the Shaytan and his wiles; and from all other troubles and disasters."

"المتقين" - AlMuttaqeen
In this Dunya they feared Allah much, so Allah rewarded them with a place of security in the Hereafter in which there is no fear. الجزاء من جنس العمل - The recompense is of the same nature as the deed.

Whenever the people of the Dunya are in a place they do not feel secure, they move to a safer place. Jannah is مقام أمين.

In Surah Luqman [31:8]:

"Verily, those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, for them are Gardens of delight (Paradise)."

Ibn Katheer رحمه الله said, "They will enjoy all kinds of delight and pleasures; food, drink, clothing, dwelling places, means of transportation, women, a light of beauty and delightful sounds, which have never crossed the mind of any human being. They will stay there forever; never leaving, and never desiring change."

What is forbidden in Paradise? Allah forbade wretchedness in Jannah, as He forbade water and delight for the people of Hellfire. In Surat Al-A'raf [7:50]:

"And the dwellers of the Fire will call to the dwellers of Paradise: "Pour on us some water or anything that Allah has provided you with." They will say: "Both (water and provision) Allah has forbidden to the disbelievers."

In Surah ar-Ra'd [13:29]:

"Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism), and work righteousness, Tuba (it means all kinds of happiness or name of a tree in Paradise) is for them and a beautiful place of (final) return."

"إن الذين ءامنوا و عملوا الصالحات"
They believed with their hearts in Allah and all the articles of faith, and proved their belief with righteous deeds: deeds of the heart (such as loving Allah, fearing Him, having hope in Him) and deeds of the limbs (such as Salat).
For them is Tuba.

طوبى is derived from the word طيب;- The people of Paradise will attain everything good in Paradise.

Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما said, "Tuba means happiness and comfort of the eye"

Ikrimah said, "How excellent is what they earned."

Qatadah said, "طبى is derived from the word طيب, and all what is in Paradise is good."

Ad-Dahak said, "A joy for them."

Al-Baghawi said, "Better for them"
All these meanings are synonymous and do not contradict one another.

طوبى is also a name for a tree in Paradise whose width is a hundred years and the clothes of Paradise are taken from its bark. [Reported by Ahmed and Authenticated by al-Albani in Saheeh Jam'i 3918]

 The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Tuba is for he who saw me and believed in me. Tuba, and another Tuba, and another Tuba for those who believed in me, but did not see me." [Authenticated by Al-Albani in Saheeh al-Jam'i 3923]
