One of the things which will increase the faith in our hearts before entering the month of Ramadan is to study the Hadiths which particularly talk about the month.
The Prophet ﷺ said,
When Ramadan begins, the gates of Jannah are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
What does this Hadeeth mean?
As the sun sets on the last day of Sha'ban, the gates of Paradise will be opened. The Scholars say that the gates of Paradise will actually be opened and the gates of Hellfire will actually be closed; a true opening and closing.
What is required from us? To believe that the gates of Paradise will be opened and the gates of Hellfire are closed.
There are some Scholars who gave it a meaning:
Al-Baaji said that the opening of the gates of Paradise means abundant forgiveness, elevation in ranks, and the giving of abundant reward.
As-Suyooti, when explaining Sunan an-Nasaa'i said, "The gates of mercy are opened. This most probably refers to what Allah opens for His servants of acts of obedience which are means of entering Paradise. The closing of the gates of Hell means the diverting of intentions from committing sins which lead people to Hell." [End Quote]
All these interpretations are correct.
The gates of Paradise are opened to encourage the good-doers to increase in performance of acts of obedience. Do all the good deeds that you can do in the month of Ramadan, because this is the only month in which the gates of Paradise are opened.
However, who among the Muslims will be occupied with the performance of good deeds? The believers. This is why belief is very important. Only the believers who truly believe with certainty are engaged in the performance of abundant good deeds during the month of Ramadan and avoiding sin. Belief with certainty motivates the believer to take action.
-> Knowledge about Paradise and Hell is a part of your belief in the Day of Judgement. When you study about Paradise and Hell, you are increasing your belief in the Day of Judgement.
-> Knowledge about Paradise and Hell is a means of softening your heart. Your heart will be ready to accept the facts of faith and increase in faith. The soft heart is not when you watch a film and cry, the person with a soft heart is the person who when he hears about Paradise, Hell, Allah, his faith increases. This indicates that the heart of the person is soft. As for the person with a hard heart, no matter how much he hears about the facts of faith, it has no effect on him.
We need to enter the month of Ramadan with soft hearts. The first thing that will happen in Ramadan is that the gates of Paradise will be open and the gates of Hell will be closed, so if we do not know about Paradise and Hell, how will we be motivated to perform good deeds with الايمان and إحتساب?
Allah informed us in the Qur'an that on the Day of Judgement, people will only be of two categories at the end: فريق في الجنة و فريق في السَّعير - A party will be in Paradise and a party in the blazing Fire
In Surah Shura [42:7]:
"And thus We have inspired unto you (O Muhammad) a Quran (in Arabic) that you may warn the Mother of the Towns (Makkah) and all around it. And warn of the Day of Assembling, of which there is no doubt, when a party will be in Paradise (those who believed in Allah and followed what Allah's Messenger brought them) and a party in the blazing Fire (Hell) (those who disbelieved in Allah and followed not what Allah's Messenger brought them)."
"وكذالك أوحينا إليك قرءانا عربيا"
Allah revealed the Qur'an in Arabic to the Prophet ﷺ. Why?
"لتنذر أم القرى و من حولها"
1) In order to warn the Mother of the Towns (Makkah) and all around it
"و تنذر يوم الجمع لا ريب فيه"
2) And in order to warn of the day of assembly, in which there is no doubt
Then Allah said:
"فريق في الجنة و فريق في سعير"
A party will be in Paradise, a part will be in the blazing Fire.
There is no third category.
From which category will we be? Will we be from the party of Paradise or the other one?
If we want to be from the party of the people of Paradise, should we not know about Jannah; what it comprises of delights and the deeds that lead to it? If you do not know about Jannah in detail, how do you expect to be among its people? Most of the Muslims only know about Jannah generally - that it is gardens, nice, a good place. We should know and believe in Paradise in detail.
We believe that on the Day of Judgement, a party will be in Paradise, and a party will be in the blazing Fire. Everyone wants to be in Paradise, but how truthful are we in seeking it? We have to take the means of entering Jannah - and the first step is detailed knowledge. But because we do not have knowledge, we have weak motivation and weak good deeds; deeds without a soul. The true believers heart opens with the gates of Paradise in Ramadan.
Where will we know about Jannah? The Qur'an and Sunnah
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to a man: ‘What do you say during your Salat?’ He said: ‘The Tashah-hud, then I ask Allah for Paradise, and I seek refuge with Him from Hell, but I do not understand what you and Mu’adh murmur (during Salat). He said: ‘Our murmuring revolves around the same things.’” [Ibn Majah]
دندنة is what we say with our tongues and intend with our hearts.
All our supplications revolve around Paradise and Hell.
E.g. You ask Allah protection from Fitnah. This is so you are protected from Hellfire and entered into Paradise. This should be the greatest goal we want to attain.
Paradise is not one garden; it is many gardens, and it is the abode of the People of Belief.
On the Day of Judgement, Allah's Attributes will be clearly shown to the entire creation. Allah, by His pardoning, will make the believers cross As-Siraat which will be set over Hellfire on the Day of Judgement. Allah will save them from falling into Hellfire by His pardon (عفو). When the believers cross the Siraat by the pardoning of Allah, Allah will admit them into Paradise by His Mercy (رحمته). When they enter Paradise they will take their position in Paradise according to Allah's graciousness and bounty (فضل).
Allah is العفوا; He is the One who overlooks the evil deeds. The person either abandoned an obligatory act or committed a sin. By Allah's pardon, He will overlook these sins and make him cross the Siraat.
After the Siraat, Allah will enter them into Paradise by His mercy, as in the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ:
لَنْ يُدْخِلَ أَحَدًا عَمَلُهُ الْجَنَّةَ ". قَالُوا وَلاَ أَنْتَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ " لاَ، وَلاَ أَنَا إِلاَّ أَنْ يَتَغَمَّدَنِي اللَّهُ بِفَضْلٍ وَرَحْمَةٍ
The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise." (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet's companions) said, 'Not even you, O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)?' He said, "Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me." [Al-Bukhari]
Everyone will then take his place in Paradise according to the فضل of Allah.
Allah deals with the believers with His Name غفور شكور. He is غفور in forgiving their sins and shortcomings, and will give them them the reward of the full deed. Then, Allah will multiply the reward of that good deed manifold, because He is شكور.
Allah's Attributes are clearly shown on the Day of Judgement with all people, and specifically with the believers. When we know this about Allah on the Day of Judgement, what then should be attitude while we in this Dunya? We should take advantage of every virtuous time to supplicate to Allah to pardon us. Every good starts with عفو الله. If Allah pardons you, everything good will come after that. And what is better than Ramadan as an opportunity for the believers to ask Allah for العفوا?
That is why, when Aisha رضي الله عنها asked the Prophet ﷺ what to say if she thought it was Laylat Al-Qadr, he only told her to say one thing:
اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعفُ عني
Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni (O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness; so forgive me). [at-Tirmithi]
He taught this to Aisha and taught this to us. Many Muslim women are concerned about their period on the last 10 days and the fact that they will not be able to go to the Masjid. The most important thing you should be concerned about is that Allah forgives you and pardons you. The Prophet ﷺ guided us to ask Allah for العفو. Put all your sins in front of you and ask Allah to pardon you. It is not about praying in this certain Masjid, for this many hours, with this specific Imam.
Allah gave more than three chances for forgiveness in the month of Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ said:
He who observes fasting during the month of Ramadan with Faith while seeking its reward from Allah, will have his past sins forgiven. [Bukhari and Muslim]
He who observes optional prayer (Tarawih prayers) throughout Ramadan, out of sincerity of Faith and in the hope of earning reward will have his past sins pardoned. [Bukhari and Muslim]
Whosoever performs Qiyam during Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), with Faith and being hopeful of Allah's reward, will have his former sins forgiven. [Bukhari and Muslim]
If you are not forgiven in the month of Ramadan, then what life are you living? If Allah deals with you with His pardoning, then this is the beginning of every good.
Say this supplication profusely in your prostration, while you are closest to Allah. This should be our state in this Dunya, in order that Allah will deal with us with His pardoning in the Hereafter.
How will the state of the People of Hell be on the Day of Judgement? What was the state of the People of Hell in the Dunya that made them deserve the Hellfire?
In Surat an-Naba [78:27-30]:
"For verily, they used not to look for a reckoning."
They never hoped for حساب from Allah on the Day of Judgement. They were not keen or eager for any reward in the Hereafter. They do not perform any good deeds in this Dunya.
In other words: Whoever hopes for a حساب on the Day of Judgement will be engaged in performing good deeds because he hopes for something on the Day of Judgement. He will be ملتزم; abiding by the law of Allah, performing good deeds, not committing sins.
They do not care or hope for any punishment or reward on the Day of Judgement. There are among Muslims who neglect their prayer, sleeping in the whole day during the month of Ramadan.
If the person expects حساب from Allah he will not waste his time in the Dunya, and will be diligent in performing good deeds.
"But they belied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, and that which Our Prophet (Peace be upon him) brought) completely."
Ramadan is a great chance for forgiveness, so when this blessed month starts, we should clear our hearts from every worldly occupation and fill it with Jannah, Allah, the reward, etc. Leave the people of the Dunya and the work of the Dunya and try to focus on the Hereafter.
In this Dunya you have to always be coveting and eager for the reward of Allah. You should focus on Allah's pardoning and mercy.
The state of the disbelievers: لا يرجون حسابا
The state of the believers: يرجون حسابا -> This is why they perform good deeds.
The Jannah is not one Jannah, it is many gardens, as mentioned by AlBukhari in Kitab ArRiqaq. And it is of different degrees, each persons degree according to his level of faith and Tawheed. The more you fulfill Tawheed, the higher your rank will be in Paradise.
At the end of the verses, Allah mentioned their recompense:
"So taste you (the results of your evil actions); no increase shall We give you, except in torment."
As-Sa'di رحمه الله said,
The longer the time passes the more severe their punishment will become. Indeed, this verse contains the most severest description of the punishment designated for the people of the Fire. [Tayseer al-Kareem]
For the people of Paradise, the delight increases day by day. Today's delight will better than yesterday. As for the people of Hell, their punishment increases day by day. PThe punishment will not stop at one level, it will increase. And the people of Hell will remain in Hell forever.
We have to stop at the verses where Allah talks about Hell and Paradise and reflect over its meaning.
The Names of Paradise
Allah called Paradise different names. And whenever something has many names, it indicates its greatness and magnificence. Every name has a description, and every description has certain people for it.
The Name of Paradise -> Its Description -> What did the people do to deserve it?
Abode of Peace
This is mentioned in two verses in the whole Qur'an:
a) Surah Yunus [10:24-25]:
"Verily the likeness of (this) worldly life is as the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, so by it arises the intermingled produce of the earth of which men and cattle eat until when the earth is clad with its adornments and is beautified, and its people think that they have all the powers of disposal over it, Our Command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a clean-mown harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday! Thus do We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, laws, etc.) in detail for the people who reflect."
Allah described the worldly life, and at the end of the parable, Allah mentioned that He made it a clean mown harvest as if it had not flourished yesterday.
This is the state of the gardens of the Dunya and the state of any worldly matter. It becomes beautiful, flourishes, and when the command of Allah suddenly comes, it is destroyed as if it had not flourished before.
Then in Verse 25, Allah says:
"Allah calls to the home of peace (i.e. Paradise, by accepting Allah's religion of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds and abstaining from polytheism and evil deeds) and guides whom He wills to a Straight Path."
Allah calls all His servants to دار السلام; the abode of peace and soundness. But will everyone enter it?
"و يهدي من يشاء إلى الصراط المستقيم" - And guides whomever He wills to the Straight Path
No. Allah, by His knowledge and wisdom, knows who deserves it. He called everyone to it, but guides whomever He wills to it. It is out of Allah's grace, wisdom, and justice, that He particularized whomever He wills to enter دار السلام.
As-Sa'di رحمه الله said:
1) Allah called Paradise دار السلام because of its soundness from every deficiency
2) And because of its perfect and complete delight.
3) Because it is eternal
4) Because it is beautiful in all aspects. Paradise has reached the utmost beauty.
Compare this to the Dunya:
1) It is not free of every deficiency at all.
If the husband is good, the children will give you a hard time. If the children are good, the husband gives a hard time. If the husband and children are good, the in laws give you a hard time. If the husband and children and in laws are good, the neighbors give you a hard time.
2) Do not look for perfection in this world, because there is no perfection in it.
Allah mentioned the Dunya first in order for our hearts to be directed to دار السلام, not here. Do not complain; this is the state of the Dunya. Hope for دار السلام. This husband will be good in Jannah, this children will be good in Jannah, if Allah has written for you to be with them.
3) The delight of the Dunya is temporary and full of pain. If you enjoy one hour, then there is twenty three hours of sadness. The delights of the Dunya are surrounded with grief, concern, worries, whether it is food, drinks, clothes, etc.
Mothers who are always looking for husband for their children. When the proposal comes they are happy. After that they are concerned from the moment they get married, to when they have children, to when they have grandchildren. One time they are happy and the rest of the life they are unhappy. The delight of the Dunya is like this; it is surrounded with pain, worries, concern, problems. This is the حال الدنيا (state of the Dunya). Many people look for rest in the Dunya, but there is no rest in this Dunya.
If you are looking for rest in this world, you are mistaken. The rest is not here, it is in Jannah. We have to understand the fact about this life, it is the abode of trials, test, worries, anxieties. The Dunya is not دار السلام. If you really believe this, you will be at rest. Whenever you see any problem, you'll overlook it, because it is the state of the Dunya. You will not stay crying over the Dunya. We need to cry when we miss opportunities of doing good in the Dunya, when we miss Tahajjud, when we miss a day that we could have fasted.
4) If you see anything beautiful in the Dunya, then know that eventually it will turn into ugliness. A person is beautiful now, later she will become old and her beauty will come to an end. This is the abode of deficiency.
Allah mentioned this in order for our hearts not to be attached to the Dunya, but to be attached to دار السلام. We need to repeat these facts to ourselves.
After Allah told us about Jannah, you may be yearning to be in it. What should you do to enter it?
In Verse 26:
"For those who have done good is the best (reward, i.e. Paradise) and even more (i.e. having the honour of glancing at the Countenance of Allah) Neither darkness nor dust nor any humiliating disgrace shall cover their faces. They are the dwellers of Paradise, they will abide therein forever."
الإحسان has two meanings:
1) Doing Good
2) Perfection
We should perform good deeds with perfection.
As-Sa'di رحمه الله explained this verse saying:
There are two types of Ihsan:
1) In worshipping Allah
They performed Ihsan in worshipping their Creator, by believing that He is watchful over them, and performing their deeds with sincerity, and performing deeds of righteousness as much as they are able to.
2) With the creation
This is with statement and action.
a) Statement is by saying good, enjoining good and forbidding evil, keeping silent if you have nothing good to say, etc.
b) Actions is good actions with your limbs - starting with those near to you than to those far.
b) Surah Al-An'am [6:126-127]:
"And this is the Path of your Lord (the Quran and Islam) leading Straight. We have detailed Our Revelations for a people who take heed."
"For them will be the home of peace (Paradise) with their Lord. And He will be their Wali (Helper and Protector) because of what they used to do."
There is a difference between this position and the position in Surah Yunus. Who is دار السلام for?
"قوم يذكرون" - a people who take heed
As-Sa'di رحمه لله said:
They are those who learn and benefit from their knowledge. Accordingly, Allah prepared for them an abundant and beautiful reward (I.e.
Paradise is called دار السلام because it is free from every fault, bitterness, worry, sorrow, etc. This entails that the bounties and blessings of Paradise are on the highest level of perfection, to the extent that none of those who describe are able to describe it perfectly, nor can the wishes of the wish-makers surpass it. It contains pleasures for the soul, the heart, and the body; and for them they will have therein whatever they wish for, and what will give delight to their eyes, and they will abide therein eternally.
"و هو وليهم بما كانوا يعلمون" - And He will be their Wali because of what they used to do
If Allah is your Wali, what will He do for you?
He manages their lives, nurtures them, treats them with kindness and benevolence in all their affairs, aids them in His obedience, and makes every path that leads to His love easy for them.
What did they do so that they deserved the ولاية of Allah?
And He only took them into His guardianship because of their good deeds and what they performed to gain His pleasure
The believers who go to دار السلام used to do good deeds in this world which made Allah their Wali.
E.g. They are sick and cannot pray the night prayer. Allah will help them pray it.
Allah will make the path that leads to His love easy for them. He will guide them to every deed, through which they will attain the love of Allah. These are those whom Allah will be their Wali and who will enter دار السلام.
In Surah Al-Baqarah [2:257]:
"Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are Taghut [false deities and false leaders, etc.], they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever."
We have to strengthen our faith in order for Allah to be our Wali.
We have people who seek Allah's Wilaya, and others whom the Shayateen are their Wali. In Verse 128:
"And on the Day when He will gather them (all) together (and say): "O you assembly of jinns! Many did you mislead of men," and their Auliya' (friends and helpers, etc.) amongst men will say: "Our Lord! We benefited one from the other, but now we have reached our appointed term which You did appoint for us." He will say: "The Fire be your dwelling-place, you will dwell therein forever, except as Allah may will. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing."
The Jinn are Awliya to the men and the men are Awliyaa to the Jinn.
As-Sa'di رحمه الله said:
This refers to all those among the Jinn and men who misguided themselves and misguided others.
"استمتع بَعضُنَا ببعض" - We benefited from one another
In what way did they benefit each other? When humans sought help from the Jinn to fulfill their desire in this Dunya, like fortune-tellers, the Jinn would enjoy the worship of men for them and the men would enjoy the service of the Jinn. Their final abode will be Hellfire.
In Verse 129:
"And thus We do make the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.) Auliya' (supporters and helpers) one to another (in committing crimes etc.), because of that which they used to earn."
Allah will make the wrongdoers allies to one another, while the believers, because of their good deeds, will have Allah as their Wali.
Who do you want your Wali to be? Choose for yourself;- It depends on your deeds.
In conclusion:
In Surah Yunus, it is as if it said that if you submit yourself to Allah and do righteous deeds seeking nearness to Allah, Allah will turn your heart away from the Dunya - the perishing life - as an impact, and make you attached to دار السلام.
In Surah Al-An'am, it is as if you are told that if you submit to Allah and do righteous deeds, Allah will be your Wali and will protect you from the Wilaya of the Shayateen, and as a result of the Wilaya, Allah will admit you into دار السلام.
It's a result of what you used to do in the world.
In Surah Al-Furqan [25:15-16]:
"Say: (O Muhammad) "Is that (torment) better or the Paradise of Eternity promised to the Muttaqun (pious and righteous persons - see V.2:2)?" It will be theirs as a reward and as a final destination."
The Muttaqeen are the pious who fear Allah and love Allah much; they do what Allah commanded and stay away from what Allah forbade them from. They put a barrier between them and the punishment of Allah.
"For them there will be therein all that they desire, and they will abide (there forever). It is a promise binding upon your Lord that must be fulfilled."
They will live there forever and no one can make them leave it. In Surah Al-Hijr [15:48]:
"No sense of fatigue shall touch them, nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave it."
The disbelievers also have Hellfire as دار الخلد. In Surah Fussilat [41:28]:
"That is the recompense of the enemies of Allah: The Fire, therein will be for them the eternal home, a (deserving) recompense for that they used to deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)."
In Surat Fatir [35:34-35]:
"And they will say: "All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has removed from us (all) grief. Verily, our Lord is indeed OftForgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense)."
"Who, out of His Grace, has lodged us in a home that will last forever; there, toil will touch us not, nor weariness will touch us."
When the People of Jannah enter Jannah they will say الحمد لله الذي أذهبنا عنا الحزن - All praise and thanks be to Allah, who has removed from us grief. This indicates that this world is دار الحزن (The abode of grief). The Dunya is full of fatigue and لغوب and نصب.
Who will be admitted into دار المقامة and say this? In Verses 29 and 30:
"Verily, those who recite the Book of Allah (this Quran), and perform AsSalat (IqamatasSalat), and spend (in charity) out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for a (sure) tradegain that will never perish."
"إن الذين يتلون كتاب الله"
تلاوة القرآن is following the Qur'an. In Surah ash-Shams [91:2]:
"And by the moon as it follows it (the sun);"
As-Sa'di رحمه الله said:
They recite the Quran, follow its commands, abstain from its prohibitions, believe in its news, and they do not precede the statement of anyone over the statement of Allah. They understand the meaning, ponder over it, and act upon it.
"و أقاموا الصلاة و أنفقوا مما رزقناهم سرا و علانية"
ثم خَص من التلاوة بعد ما عّم، الصلاة التي هي عماد الدين ونور المسلمين و ميزان الإيمان و علامة صدق الإسلام
Then He specified the prayer from At-Tilawah after the general statement, which is the pillar of faith, the light of the Muslims, the scale of faith, and the sign of the truthfulness of ones Islam.
Allah commands us to pray and give charity in the Quran. But Allah mentioned it again in this verse, emphasizing it in particular, although the believers already do it.
The prayer is a scale to measure your faith - if you want to measure your faith, check your prayer. It is a light for the believer in the Dunya, in his grave, on the Day of Judgement.
And spending on their relatives, on the poor, on the orphan, and others from Zakat, expiation, vows, charity, in all times.
Spending in both secret and open indicates sincerity.
"يرجون تجارة لن تبور" - Hope for a sure traidgain which will never perish
This all indicates their sincerity. When they are following the Quran, praying, spending secretly and openly, they are hoping for a traid gain which never perishes.
When you enter any investment you have a capital. What is your capital in your business with Allah? Your good deeds - following the Quran, praying, giving openly and secretly.
You hope that your business will be profitable. And be sure, that if you do everything with sincerity, Allah will never let your deeds go in vain. It will increase in good and reward.
When they did this in the Dunya, how did Allah deal with them in the Hereafter?
"That He may pay them their wages in full, and give them (even) more, out of His Grace. Verily! He is OftForgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense)."
The Names غفور شكور have been mentioned twice.
