The Demise and Scarceness of Righteous People....

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Hadeeth:
The Demise and Scarceness of Righteous People is One of the Signs of the Nearness of the Day of Resurrection

Narrated Mirdas al-Aslami (Radia-Allaahu'anhu) that the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said,

"The righteous (pious) people will depart (die) in succession one after the other, and there will remain (on the earth) useless people like the useless husk of barley seeds or bad dates, and Allah will not care the least for them" [Al-Bukhari #6434]

Commentary:

#1 - Mirdas Al-Aslami (Radia-Allaahu'anhu) was among those who had given the Bai'ah (Pledge) under the tree to the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). He said that the pious will depart from the surface of the earth in succession and there will remain the dregs of society, who will be like useless residues of dates and barley, and Allah will pay no attention to them, meaning that Allah will not raise them in value nor in esteem (i.e. not show mercy to them)

#2- The demise of pious people is one of the signs of the nearness of the Day of Resurrection. This Hadeeth resembles another Hadeeth in which the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "No time will come upon you but the time following it will be worse than it" [Al-Bukhari #7068]

The state of people will deteriorate every year from its condition the year before. In the past, one would find people establishing the nights with Tahajjud prayer, observing fast during the day, giving charity from their earnings, and preferring others over themselves. Today, one finds the state of the people worse than the year before; staying awake late at night whilst neglecting to perform acts of obedience to Allah, sleeping during the day time, or engaging in play and amusement, or in selling and buying which consists of cheating, lies, and treachery. In spite of that, there are good people, who are upright and on the right path. However, the consideration of the Hadeeth is the majority of people. The Prophet (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "If Allah sends punishment upon a nation then it befalls the whole population indiscriminately and then they will be resurrected (and judged) according to their deeds" [Al-Bukhari #7108]

Therefore, one should beware of being from among the dregs of people, who are likened to the residue of barley or dates, and be keen to stay upright upon the command of Allah, so that even if all the people are destroyed by a punishment, he will be resurrected and judged according to his intention. [Sharh Riyadus-Saliheen by Shaikh Ibn Othaimeen]

#3- The Hadeeth urges one to take good people as examples to be followed and warns against opposing them out of fear of becoming of those whom Allah will neither give attention to nor have mercy on.

#4- The Hadeeth indicates that during the last days; near to the Day of Resurrection, the pious will not remain and only the wicked will inhabit the earth. The Day of Judgement will dawn on such a people.

Rowaifi' ibn Thaabit Al-Ansari (Radia-Allaahu'anhu) narrated, "Fresh and dry dates were brought to the Messenger of Allah (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and the Companions. When they ate it and only the stones of the date remained, he said, "Do you know what this is?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) know best". He said, "You will depart (this world) the best among you then the next best until none of you will remain like this" [Authenticated by Al-Albaani in Al-Silsilah As-Saheeha #1781 and graded it Hasan]

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (Radia-Allaahu'anhu) narrated that Allah's Messenger (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "The Hour will not be established until Allah will take those whom He chose of good people of the people of the earth, so only the wicked in whom there is no good will remain behind, who do not know Ma'rouf nor forbid the Munkar (evil)" [Reported by Ahmed and Authenticated by Al-Arna'oot and Ibn Hajar said its Isnad is good]

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (Radia-Allaahu'anhu) narrated that Allah's Messenger (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "How will you be at a time that will soon come, when the good people will pass away and only the worst ones will be left, who will break their promises and betray their trusts, and they will differ while they were previously together like this" - and he (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) interlaced his fingers. They said, "O Messenger of Allah! What should we do when that time comes to pass?" He (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Follow that which you know is true and leave that which you dislike. Take care of your own affairs and turn away from the affairs of the common folk" [Authenticated by Al-Albani in Saheeh Al-Jami'ee #4594]

#5- The Hour shall only be established when the worst of people inhabit the earth. They will have an abundance of wealth and wealth alone shall be considered the hallmark of ones happiness and good fortune.

Hudhaifah (Radia-Allaahu'anhu) narrated that Allah's Messenger (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "The Hour will not be established until the happiest of people in the world is Luka' ibn Luka' (i.e. Foolish, the son of Foolish; or Disgraceful, the son of Disgraceful)" [Authenticated by Al-Albaani in Saheeh Al-Jami'e #7431]

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr (Radia-Allaahu'anhu) narrated that the Prophet (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Indeed one of the signs of the nearness of the Hour is raising up the wicked and lowering the good people" [At-Tabaraani and Authenticated by Al-Albani in As-Silsilah As-Saheeha #2821]

The wicked and humiliated in rank being elevated and given the riches of the Dunya besides others is one of the signs of the nearness of the Hour and its establishment. It indicates the change of states, the turning over of balances, and reversal of facts.

It was narrated by Abu Hurayrah (Radia-Allaahu'anhu)  that Allah's Messenger (Salla-Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "There will come to the people years of deception (treachery), when the liar will be regarded as truthful, and the truthful man will be regarded as a liar, the traitor will be regarded as honest, and the honest man will be regarded as a traitor, and the Rowaibidah will speak (decide matters)." It was said, "Who are the Rowaibidah?" He said, "Vile and base men who decide the affairs of the people" [Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Majah and Authenticated by Al-Albani in Al-Silsilah As-Saheeha #1887]

#6- It is incumbent upon the Muslim to hasten in taking advantage of the time that he is in; to be diligent and exert his utmost in performing good deeds, focusing on himself, taking that which is good and abandoning that which is evil, and not being deceived with outward appearances nor being fooled or deceived with the Fitan (Trials).
