Talking and Permissible Movements in Prayer:
Hadith #172:
Ruling:Talking nullifies the Prayer.
This ruling applies to both obligatory and voluntary prayers. All rulings that apply to obligatory prayers apply to voluntary prayers, unless there is explicit evidence against that.
"إنٌما هو التسبيح و التّكبير و قراة القرآن" - for it (prayer) only consists of glorifying Allah, declaring His Greatness, and the recitation of the Qur'an.
Ruling: There are no silent moments in Salat, unless of course you are following an Imam in a loud prayer. You are always moving your tongue and lips in Tasbeeh, Takbeer, and Recitation of the Qur'an.
-> If you are praying behind an Imam during a prayer which is recited quietly, you should recite quietly as well, but if you forgot to recite, the recitation of the Imam is considered sufficient for you. This applies to anything you forget to do in a prayer behind an Imam.
The Difference between Orders and Prohibitions in Prayer in the case of Ignorance or Forgetfulness
Orders
E.g. Facing the Qiblah
E.g. وضوء (Ablution)
If you leave out an order out of ignorance or forgetfulness:
a) You are not sinful
b) You have to repeat it
Prohibitions
E.g. Talking
If you leave out a prohibition out of ignorance or forgetfulness:
a) You are not sinful
b) You do not have to repeat the prayer
The Story of this Hadith is that whilst a companion was praying, he started talking. So all the companions tried to draw his attention that he was doing something wrong by clapping, etc. After the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ told him the aforementioned Hadith, and did not command him to repeat his prayer.
Ruling: All prohibitons in prayer do not nullify it if done out of forgetfulness or ignorance.
-> Ibn Othaimeen رحمه الله discussed laughing - does it break the prayer? Yes; laughing is just like talking. Smiling, is not okay to do, but if it happened by incident, it does not break the prayer.
-> To warn someone or turn the attention of someone without talking while in prayer is permissible. However, this is only done in necessity. Too much movement nullifies the prayer.
E.g. Your sleeves come up while you are praying, it becomes obligatory for you to pull your sleeves down. If you forget, and it is exposed for a long time, your prayer is nullified (because covering the 'Awrah is a condition) and you have to repeat - because you are not sinful for leaving orders out, but you have to repeat.
-> The only talking allowed is when someone sneezes while prayer. They are allowed to say, "الحمد لله", but you do not say "يرحمك الله". Some Scholars say you can say it after the prayer.
Hadith #173:
"الصلاة الوسطى" -> Salaat Al-Asr.
This shows us the importance of Salaat Al-Asr, which many people sleep through.
النسخ (Abrogation) -> The new ruling abrogates the first one. Talking in prayer was abolished by the Verse in Surah Baqarah [2:238].
"Guard strictly (five obligatory) As-Salawat (the prayers) especially the middle Salat (i.e. the best prayer - 'Asr). And stand before Allah with obedience [and do not speak to others during the Salat (prayers)]."
Hadith #174:
We are not allowed to talk in prayer, so what do we do when we want to warn someone or draw their attention (if they make a mistake, for example)?
Men should say سبحان الله
Women should clap
The voice of a woman is not an 'Awrah, but it is not liked for her to show her voice all the time.
Ibn Othaimeen رحمه الله mentions an example for this:
E.g. Your daughter came to ask you something and finds you praying. Can you answer her by gesturing while praying? Yes, because you are allowed to clap and do slight movements, so any small movement that will answer her question is allowed. This does not mean you do this frequently; it is only for necessity. And kids will know when it is a very important question to ask you whilst your are praying or not.
You can:
-> Clap - Men are not allowed to do this.
-> Tasbeeh - You can do this whilst you are not in the presence of men
-> Raise your voice with what you are reciting
E.g. If someone knocks on the door and you want show them you are praying, you can raise your voice whilst praying. It is liked for a praying Muslim to tell the other you are praying by making Tasbeeh, gesturing etc. so the person will not continue nagging him.
If you are in a hurry because a child is crying or someone is knocking the door, do not hasten praying, just omit all the Sunan - omit reciting the Surah after AlFatihah, not saying the Tasbeeh in Rukoo' and Sujood except once. If the Salaat is prayed hastily, it is Haraam and not accepted, because one of the conditions of prayer is to be tranquil and settled at every stage. The evidence is that the Prophet ﷺ saw someone praying hastily, and ordered him to repeat his prayer.
You hear people saying the clapping even outside the prayer is Haraam, which is why you hear people saying الله اكبر when congratulating or cheering. They take their evidence as the verse in Surah Al-Anfal [8:35]:
"Their Salat (prayer) at the House (of Allah, i.e. the Ka'bah at Makkah) was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. Therefore taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve."
Ibn Othaimeen رحمه الله says if Allah commanded women to clap in prayer how can you say it is Haraam outside the prayer? The clapping and whistling was what the disbelievers prayer was.
If there is a doubt about something and you take the opinion that it Haraam for yourself, do not do it, but do not tell people it is Haraam.
He also mentioned that this clapping could be in any way.
Hadith #175:
There are some people who pretend to cry in prayer.
Umar bin Khattab رضي الله عنه said if you cannot cry, make yourself cry. This applies to when you recite Quran, and you are alone.
If you hear a verse and cry, but not out of fear of Allah, but because of a worldly matter, some Scholars say such weeping nullifies the prayer. Ibn Othaimeen رحمه الله is of the opinion that crying in general does not nullify the prayer; the reason that caused your crying is something between you and Allah.
Side Note: If you send Salat upon the Prophet ﷺ instead of dua, you will get that need you wanted to ask for and the answer to your need when sending Salat is more definite than actually asking Allah for it.
Hadith #176:
-> Clearing your throat is allowed in Prayer.
-> We also learn that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray in his house;- but voluntary prayers. Therefore it is Sunnah to pray voluntary prayers in ones house.
Hadith #177:
Answering the Salaam by pointing/gesturing is another movement allowed in prayer. However, you are not obliged to reply. Prayer is an obligation and replying to the Salaam is an obligation, but you are already engaged in an obligation.
Commencing the greeting is recommended, not obligatory, so if someone sees you praying, they should not commence it.
And this shows us that gesturing/pointing for any other reason is also allowed.
Hadith #178:
Carrying a baby while praying is permissible, and from this Hadith we also learn that carrying the Qur'an during prayer is allowed. Scholars say that holding the Qur'an in voluntary prayers is allowed. Ibn Baz says holding it during obligatory prayers is allowed as well.
If you are not feeling well you can hold your handkerchief, etc.
However, if you can smell that their diaper is not clean, you should go clean it.
Hadith #179:
If you see a scorpion anywhere, kill it.
If the snake is in your house, you are not allowed to kill it. There is a Hadith from the Prophet ﷺ which supports this, because snakes in the house are Jinn, and if you kill it, they will kill you.
You should tell it to go away three times. If it is a Jinn, it will understand and go away. If it keeps hiding, remove the things which it keeps hiding in, and tell it that you will kill it if it does not leave. If it does not leave after three days of warning, you can kill it, because it is not a Jinn.
You are allowed to kill it during your prayer, and this takes up a lot of movement. This is because of the harm they cause. If it is not in your way, and requires you to run after it, cut your prayer, but repeat it later.
