بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
And from the Consequences: The sinner is always in the captivity of the Shaytan and the prison of his desires. And if the heart is shackled, sicknesses will come to him from all sides, according to the amount he is chained. And the example of the heart is like the example of the bird, every time it goes higher, it becomes further away from sicknesses, and every time it goes down, sicknesses encompass it.

From the Consequences of Sins and Disobedience
And from the Consequences: It blinds the seeing of the heart (ones insight) and extinguishes its light.
The light in the heart of the believer shows him what is right from wrong.
It blocks the paths of knowledge and forms a barrier between the ways of guidance
The sinner may learn and learn but this knowledge will not take him forward. He will just increase in information and memorization.
There is guidance, but the sinner does not see it.
With استغفار (seeking forgiveness), the person will gain insight, see the right as right and wrong as wrong, and the ways of knowledge and guidance will become easy for him.
And this light will not cease to weaken and dwindle away, while the darkness of disobedience strengthens, until the heart becomes like a black night
The person will see wrong as right and right as wrong. And this is due to sins.
As the Prophet ﷺ said: "Verily, those graves are full of darkness for those buried in them. Allah, the Almighty, will illuminate them for their dwellers by my prayer over them" [Muslim #956]
There is light in the Dunya and darkness in the Dunya, and there is light in the Grave and darkness in the Grave. If you have the light of guidance in this life, Allah will give you light in the grave. The light in this life is not tangible, but the light after death is.
While the Prophet ﷺ was alive, the graves of people would be illuminated when he prayed for them.
And from the Consequences: It makes the self smaller, humiliates, and degrades it until it becomes the smallest and most worthless thing, just as obedience develops, purifies, and makes the soul greater. Allah said in Surah Ash-Shams [90:9-10]:

"Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds)."

"And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds)."
Issues like low self esteem can be due to sins. The solution is very simple, make استغفار (Seek Forgiveness). If you feel sad, make استغفار. If you feel worried, make استغفار. If you feel anxiety or tension, make استغفار.
Some people react to low self esteem with arrogance or oppressing others, but the solution is to just make استغفار. Go forward, make استغفار, and lift yourself up. There is no solution in just thinking and thinking about how worthless you are.
As per the verse in Surah As-Shams; the person corrupted himself and put himself down because of sins.
When you are in a plane and on the ground, everything is big. Similarly when your heart is down, everything becomes magnified - the problem, the people, the Dunya. When you are released with استغفار, you go up and everything becomes smaller. Faith keeps you immune from sicknesses. The lower your faith is, the more susceptible you are to sicknesses.

And the main point behind all of this is that the heart, every time it gets further away from Allah, the faster sicknesses will come. And every time it gets closer to Allah, the further away sicknesses get.
And being far from Allah is of different levels, some more severe than the other. So heedlessness makes the slave further away from Allah, and the furtherness sins cause a person to be from Allah is greater than the furtherness of heedlesness, and the furtherness of Bid'ah (Innovation) is greater than the furtherness of sins, and the furtherness of hypocrisy and Shirk is greater than all that.
When you are heedless, you are not remembering Allah and busy with the matters of this life. Although you may not be committing any sins, it causes you to become further away from Allah, because you are not remembering Him.
The Shaytan loves Bid'ah, because the sinner can feel guilty and repent, however the Mubtadi' does not feel like he is doing anything wrong.

And from the Consequences: (The Sinner will) fall from his position, rank, and honour with Allah and with His creation. This is because the most honoured of creation with Allah are those who have the most Taqwa. And closer to Him in rank are those most obedient to Him. And according to the slaves level of obedience will be his rank with Allah. So If he disobeys Allah and does contrary to His command, he will fall from His Eyes, and accordingly from the eyes of His slaves.
Even if a person outwardly has a position, he will fall from Allah's Eyes and the eyes of people, because of his sin. استغفار and obedience gives a person position with Allah and the people.

And from the greatest favours of Allah upon a slave: To raise his remembrance between the 'Alameen (Mankind, Jinn, and All that Exists), and makes high his value.
It is a blessing if Allah honour you, even if it is in the Dunya, and this is due to your obedience to Him.
And it is for this that Allah particularized the Prophets and Messengers from that, with what he has not particularized for anyone other than them, as He said in Surah Sad [38:45-46]:

"And remember Our slaves, Ibrahim (Abraham), Ishaque (Isaac), and Ya'qub (Jacob), (all) owners of strength (in worshipping Us) and (also) of religious understanding."

"Verily, We did choose them by granting them (a good thing, i.e.) the remembrance of the home [in the Hereafter and they used to make the people remember it, and also they used to invite the people to obey Allah and to do good deeds for the Hereafter]."

Meaning: Particularized them with something special and that is the beautiful remembrance with which they are remembered in this Home, and Lisan As-Sidq (Truthful Remembrance) which Ibrahim عليه السلام asked for, when he said [As mentioned in Surah Shu'araa 26:84]:

"And grant me an honourable mention in later generations;"
He asked for a good reputation, but a truthful one, after he dies. People may praise us, but they may not be truthful.
It is a blessing when Allah gives you a good reputation while you are life or after you die. People may struggle o get a good reputation, but it is not really a لسان الصدق, and will fade away quickly. A لسان الصدق is when you focus on obedience, and Allah gives it to you.
And Allah said regarding him and his son in Surah Maryam [19:50]:

"And We gave them of Our Mercy (a good provision in plenty), and We granted them honour on the tongues (of all the nations, i.e everybody remembers them with a good praise)."
And said regarding the Prophet ﷺ in Surah Ash-Sharh [94:4]:

"And we raised your fame?"
The Followers of the Messengers have a portion from that in accordance to their inheritance of Obedience and Following, and everyone who opposes them will lose from that in accordance to the level of their opposition and disobedience.

And from the Consequences: It deprives its Companion of titles of praise and honour, and causes him to be addressed by titles of humiliation.
So he is deprived of the title Mu'min, Barr, Muhsin, Muttaqi, Mutee', Muneeb, Wali, War', Saleh, Aabid, Khaaif, Awwab, Tayyib, Marda, and the like.
And he is addressed with titles like Fajir, 'Aasi, Mukhalif, Musee, Mufsid, Khabeeth, Maskhoot, Zani, Saariq, Qaatil, Khadib, Khaa'in, Looti, Qaati Rahim, Ghadir, and the like.
You have a reputation and name with Allah. Someone might have the title of Muhsin for example, meaning he always practices Ihsan. Or someone might have the title of Muttaqi, meaning he always practices Taqwa. They do not do it one or two times, they struggle struggle struggle, until they are stamped with this title and given a star. You have a title according to what you do.
So these are titles of Fusooq, and as Allah said in Surah Al-Hujurat [49:11]: "بئس الإسم الفسوق" (How evil is the name of disobedience) which obligates the Anger of Ad-Dayyan, admittance into the Fire, and a life of humiliation.
