From the Consequences of Sins and Disobedience
Disobedience and sins are the cause of all problems. The cure is استغفار, دعاء, good deeds, etc.
Sins either kill the heart or weaken it. When the heart weakens, these eight problems - worry, grief, incapacity, laziness, etc. - will affect the person.
Sins are of the strongest reasons that bring about these eight, just as they are one of the strongest reasons for bringing about a test which causes difficulty and struggle, falling into misery, an evil destiny, the mockery of enemies (when enjoying your misery)
There is a supplication where we seek refuge from these:
You are asking Allah to protect you from sins that will bring about the aforementioned. People blame Allah, evil eye, bad luck, etc when experiencing these things, but even the mockery of enemies is due to your sins. Enemies may be victorious because of the sins of the people. When Muslims fight one another, they are increasing in committing sins, which thus enables the disbelievers to overpower them.
We should not blame people, nor despair in the Mercy of Allah. All we need to do is make استغفار.
And it is of the greatest reasons for bringing the removal of the blessings of Allah, the changing of wellbeing, sudden punishment, and all that which makes Allah angry.
We need to look at every evil as from the self and the Shaytan. When Adam عليه السلام committed his sin, he did not blame the Shaytan, although he started the whisper. And this is what will keep you humble. He said, as mentioned in Surah Al-A'raaf [7:23]:
"They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers."
And from the Consequences of Sins: It removes blessings and permits punishment
How do you remove the calamities and bring blessings? In Surah Nuh [71:10-13]:
"I said (to them): 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving;"
"He will send rain to you in abundance;"
"And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers."
"What is the matter with you, [that you fear not Allah (His punishment), and] you hope not for reward (from Allah or you believe not in His Oneness)."
And Allah said in Surah Shura [42:30]:
"And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much"
And Allah said in Surah Al-Anfal [8:53]:
"That is so because Allah will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their ownselves. And verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower."
We need to believe in Allah and think good of Him. He will never change or remove a blessing from people until they change what is within themselves; from gratitude to ingratitude, from patience to complaining, from obedience to disobedience. We need to maintain our level. And the opposite is true as well, if you change yourself for the better, Allah will bestow blessings on you. When you change, it will be changed, either way.
And Allah said in Surah Ar-Ra'd [13:11]:
"For each (person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allah. Verily! Allah will not change the good condition of a people as long as they do not change their state of goodness themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah). But when Allah wills a people's punishment, there can be no turning back of it, and they will find besides Him no protector."
And from the punishments: What Allah will cast of terror and fear in the heart of the sinner. So you will not see him except that he is always terrified and in panic. For obedience is the greatest fortress of Allah, which whoever enters, will be secured from the punishments in the Dunya and in the Hereafter.
When you obey Allah you are secure, because you have a connection with Him. Sins bring about insecurity.
And from the punishments: It causes extreme loneliness in the heart.
As it was said (in lines of poetry)
So if sins cause you to feel loneliness Then leave them if you will, and feel delight
Obedience obligates closeness to the Lord, glory be to Him, and the closer you get to Him, the stronger your delight will be. And sins cause a person to be distanced from the Lord, and the further away you get, the stronger the feeling of loneliness will be.
The sinner feels empty and alone, even if he is amongst people. The one who is obedient to Allah will feel happy and at rest even if he may have no one around. And this is due to disobedience and obedience.
And the cause of loneliness is the barrier/covering (between the person and Allah). And the thicker the barrier is, the more the loneliness increases. So heedlessness (of Allah) obligates loneliness. And more severe than that is the loneliness of comitting sins. And even more severe than that is the loneliness of Shirk and Kufr. And you will not find anyone wearing anything from that except that loneliness will dominate him according to how much he wears from it. So loneliness will dominate his face and heart, so he feels lonely, and people will feel that way towards him.
And from the Consequences of Sins: It turns the heart from health and uprightness to sickness and crookedness. And those who journey to Allah said that the heart will not get what it desires until it reaches its Mawla (Allah). And it will not reach its Mawla until it is correct and sound, and it will not be correct and sound until it changes it sickness, so it becomes the same cure. And that will not be correct except by opposing ones desires, for ones desires are the sickness, and the cure is in opposing it. For if the sickness intensifies it will kill or almost kill (the heart).
Our hearts are a trust; we need to maintain its healthiness.
On our journey to Allah, we will get sick. But this sickness should make us stronger. With regards to sins, if we neglect the sickness, then we will get even sicker. But if we treat it well with استغفار, we will become stronger than before, because استغفار elevates a person.
We have desires, but we need to learn to not act upon it.
E.g. When you have children coming to the house, you cannot remove all breakables, there comes a point when you have to prevent the children from touching.
You should not go to the sins, but if it comes, you need to prevent yourself from committing them. Desires cause a person to commit sins and disobey Allah. In Surah An-Naziat [79:40-41]:
"But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts."
"Verily, Paradise will be his abode."
The solution is to not listen to yourself. You need to have knowledge; to know what to do and know what not to do. If your self tells you to go left, and it is Haraam, then go right. In Surah Yusuf [12:24]:
"And indeed she did desire him and he would have inclined to her desire, had he not seen the evidence of his Lord. Thus it was, that We might turn away from him evil and illegal sexual intercourse. Surely, he was one of Our chosen, guided slaves."
