5) It is Forbidden to Wear a Garment of Pride (for Gaining Fame)
It was narrated by Ibn Umar that the Prophet ﷺ said:
مَنْ لَبِسَ ثَوْبَ شُهْرَةٍ أَلْبَسَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ثَوْبَ مَذَلَّةٍ
"Whoever wears a garment of pride and vanity, Allah will clothe him, on the Day of Resurrection, in a garment of humiliation.’” [Ibn Majah]
And in another narration: "....a similar garment"
Ibn Al-Atheer said: A garment of pride is the garment one wears to be famous; in order for the people to look at it because of its different colour or style, and becomes proud of it.
Ibn Arslan said: He wears this garment out of pride over others, so Allah will clothe him with a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection as a punishment for him. This garment could either be expensive or cheap, but the purpose behind wearing it is for gaining fame.
7) The Prohibition of Men wearing Gold or Silk (except with an excuse)
It is forbidden for men to wear gold or silver, but permissible for women.
Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I saw Messenger of Allah ﷺ holding a piece of gold in his left hand and a silk (cloth) in his right hand. Then he said, "These two are forbidden for the males of my Ummah." [Abu Dawud]
And he ﷺ said:
"Do not wear silk (clothes). For whoever wears (them) in this life will be deprived of them in the Hereafter." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
And: "he forbade to wear a golden ring" [Bukhari]
It becomes permissible in special circumstances, such as if one is suffering from a severe case of itching.
Anas reported: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted Zubair and Abdur-Rahman bin Auf to wear silk because they were suffering from an itch" [Bukhari and Muslim]
It also becomes allowable to wear in war, or if one does not find anything to cover his 'Awrah except silk. It is also permissible if it only takes up a small portion of the garment. Umar gave a Khutbah in which he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited silk except for two fingers worth of space, or three, or four" [At-Tirmithi]
It is permissible to use gold for medication.
Narrated Arjafah: "My nose was cut off at the battle of Al-Kukab during Jahiliyyah. I got a nose of silver, which caused an inferior for me, and began to rot, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to get a nose made of gold" [At-Tirmithi]
Q. Is it permissible to allow young boys to wear silk?
A. Ibn Taymiyah said that it is not permissible, and mentioned that when Umar bin Khattab saw a boy wearing silk, he tore it.
7) It is Sunnah to Shorten the Garment of the Man and Lengthen the Garment of the Woman.
The garment of the man can end from the middle of his shin to above his ankles.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The Izar should come to the middle of the shin and calf. If you insist, then a little lower, and if you insist, then a little further down, but the Izar has no right to (come to) the ankle" [An-Nasaa'i]
And he ﷺ said, "What is below the ankles of a lower garment is condemned to the fire (Hell)" [Al-Bukhari]
The Prophet ﷺ said, "There are three (types) of people to whom Allah will neither speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at, nor purify them, and they will have a painful chastisement." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated this three times. Abu Dharr remarked, "They are ruined; who are they, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The one who lets down his lower garments (below his ankles) out of arrogance, the one who boasts of his favours done to another, and the one who sells his goods by taking a false oath" [Muslim]
Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said that when the lower garment of a woman was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: "She lets it down a handspan"
Umm Salama said, "If it leaves her uncovered?" He ﷺ said, "Then the length of a forearm and let her not increase it" [Malik]
The aim behind lengthening the lower garment of a woman is to cover her feet, due to the obligation of covering it, either with socks, shoes, or her lower garment.
