Not Indulging in Much Luxury and Walking Barefooted at Times (4/12/2016)

Abdullah ibn Buraydah said: A man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ travelled to Fudalah ibn Ubayd when he was in Egypt. He came to him and said, "I have not come to you to visit you. But you and I heard a tradition from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I hope you may have some knowledge of it." He asked, "What is it?" He replied, "Such and Such" He said, "Why do I see you dishevelled when you are the ruler of this land?" He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us to indulge much in luxury. He said, "Why do I see you unshod (barefoot)?" He replied, "The Prophet ﷺ used to command us to go barefoot at times." [Authenticated by Al-Albaani in Saheeh Abu Dawud #4160 and graded it Saheeh]

As it is Sunnah to walk wearing shoes, it is Sunnah to walk barefoot at times. This Sunnah has been abandoned by most of the Muslims nowadays. If they seek someone walking barefoot they will criticize him and accuse him of foolishness, without knowing it is Sunnah to walk barefoot.

Ibn Othaimeen رحمه الله said that if a person is known to be a learned person, he should revive the Sunnah amongst the people. But if he is a normal person in his community, and may cause Fitnah in society, it is better not to practice it. If you want to practice it, then at least act upon it in your house.

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us to indulge much in luxury"

We are forbidden from excessive occupation with beautification. There is nothing wrong with taking care of your beauty, but not all the time.

In another Hadith, The Prophet ﷺ said,
"Shabbiness is a part of Eeman" [Ibn Majah; Authenticated by Al-Albani]

If a person is always in full makeup with new clothes and bags, it would be from faith if she leaves this sometimes. This is not limited to clothes, it extends to food as well. It is not a condition that everyday the table is filled with all kinds of food. Let there be one kind one day. When you do that, do not do it because you are not in the mood to cook, but because you want to practice this Sunnah.

This does not mean you neglect your cleanliness; It means do not be excessive in taking care of your beauty. Shabbiness is humbleness in clothing and that is by leaving adornment and beautification and being pleased with cheap clothes. Your clothes do not always have to be from name brand shops.

Ibn Taymiyah mentioned in Majmoo' AlFatawa the different types of abandonment of clothes:
1) If the person abandons wearing expensive clothes out of miserliness it is blameworthy.
2) If the person abandons wearing expensive clothes because he is making it Haraam on himself, it is a sin.
3) Abandoning wearing expensive clothes trying to resemble the attire of the worshippers; be shown as a pious person. This is a type of show-off.
4) Whoever abandons it out of humbleness will be rewarded for his intention. If the person always wears expensive beautiful clothes, he will feel arrogance in his heart. This is why it is better to be shabby sometimes.

Anas ibn Malik رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰ عنه  reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever gives up fine clothing out of humility for Allah while he is able to wear them, then Allah will call him on the Day of Resurrection in front of all His creation and He will allow him to choose whichever garment of faith he desires.” [ At-Tirmidhi 2481 (Hasan)]

He can afford 50,60kd clothes, but he does not want to make people feel inferior to him, so Allah will honour him on the Day of Judgement.

-> If he wears expensive clothes our of boasting, he is consisted a sinner.
-> If he wears it out of extravagance, while he cannot afford it, it is considered
-> If he wears expensive clothes out of thanking Allah for His blessings and showing the blessings of Allah upon him, he will be rewarded for his intention. Allah made him wealthy, and he wants to show Allah he is appreciating his blessings by wearing expensive clothes.

Al-Albani said, "The Muslim should not live in a certain pattern of life. Shabbiness is a part of faith; wear whatever is available" Sometimes wear nice beautiful clothes, sometimes wear anything. This is the state of the believer; he can live in any situation; broad or constricted.

There is therefore no contradiction between the Hadith Shabbiness is part of Eeman and the Hadith where the Prophet ﷺ said:
Indeed Allah loves to see the results of his favors upon His Slaves.'" [Tirmithi]
