Hadeeth Fear (of Allah)

بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Hadeeth
Fear (of Allah)

Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that he heard Allah's Messenger ﷺ saying: "He who fears (the pillage of the enemy) sets out in the early part of the night, and he who sets out early, reaches his destination. Be on your guard that the commodity (goods) of Allah is precious, and indeed the commodity (goods) of Allah is Paradise" [Authenticated by Al-Albaani in Saheeh At-Tirmithi #2450 and graded it Saheeh]

Commentary:

1) Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله said, "The person who worships Allah should have fear and hope. When he looks to his sins and abundant evil deeds, he becomes afraid. And when he looks at his righteous good deeds and sees that they may be blemished with self-conceit and pride, he becomes afraid. If he looks to his good deeds and sees that they might have been performed for the sake of showing off, he feels afraid. And when he looks to Allah's Pardoning, Generosity, Mercy, he feels hope. So he revolves between fear and hope.

Allah says in Surat Al-Mu'minoon [23:60]:

"And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning)."

Mans walk to Allah should revolve between fear and hope. However, which should prevail? Should hope prevail over fear or fear over hope? Or should they be equal?

Imam Ahmed رحمه الله said, "Ones fear and hope should be one. If any of them prevail, the person will perish"

This is because if ones hopes are dominant, he becomes of those who feel secure from the punishment of Allah. And if his fear dominates, he becomes of their who despair of the mercy of Allah; and both of these are evil. Therefore, ones fear and hope should be equal."

[Sharh Riyadus-Saliheen by Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen]

2) Imam At-Taibi has stated that the Prophet ﷺ mentioned this example for travelers to the Hereafter, because Satan is sitting on this passage, and mans self and his false desires are his helpers. If a person is wide-awake in his travel and exercises caution in his activities, he is not only saved from the wiles of Satan, but his own false desires also do not stand in his way. The Prophet ﷺ also pointed out that the way to the Hereafter is very hard and littered with great impediments and obstructions and it is by no means easy to traverse in. Paradise is an invaluable gift and unless man gives the sacrifice of his life and wealth, he will not become eligible for entering it.

"إِنَّ اللَّهَ اشْتَرَىٰ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ الْجَنَّةَ ۚ "
"Verily, Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise...." [9:111]

[Tuhfatul Awadhi]

3) This Hadith encourages us to observe obedience to the Lord and to space no effort to desist from all acts of disobedience in order to achieve the lofty goal of entering Paradise, by Allahs Leave.

4) Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله commented on this Hadith by the following: "Setting out (or traveling) in the early part of the night indicates ones deligence and seriousness, and whoever is like that will surely reach the status. The commodity is what man presents for sale; and Allah has presented Paradise for His servants to buy. Allah says in Surah At-Tawbah [9:111]:

"Verily, Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allah's Cause, so they kill (others) and are killed. It is a promise in truth which is binding on Him in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and the Quran. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? Then rejoice in the bargain which you have concluded. That is the supreme success."

Whoever fears (i.e. In his heart is fear of Allah), will (hasten to) perform good righteous deeds which will save him from what he fears" [End Quote]

One should also fear the Day of Resurrection which Allah says about in Surah Al-Hajj [22:1-2]:

"O mankind! Fear your Lord and be dutiful to Him! Verily, the earthquake of the Hour (of Judgement) is a terrible thing."

"The Day you shall see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling, and every pregnant one will drop her load, and you shall see mankind as in a drunken state, yet they will not be drunken, but severe will be the Torment of Allah."

And Allah says in Surat Ar-Rahman [55:46]:

"But for him who fears the standing before his Lord, there will be two Gardens (i.e. in Paradise)."

Whoever fears the standing (for account) before Allah on the Day of Resurrection will obey Allah and fear His punishment. For him will be two gardens, and besides these two, or below them in excellence, are two other gardens. (i.e. There are four gardens for he who fears the standing before Allah. And people are of different degrees regarding them).
