The Various Interpretations of Dreams
There are three ways of interpreting dreams:
1) Qur'an
2) Sunnah
3) By Word
Ash-Shinqitee رحمه الله said one should first interpret it according to the symbols in the Qur'an. If it becomes difficult, then according to the Sunnah. If that becomes difficult, then by word: and this includes metaphors, common proverbs, from the language, good meanings of names, opposites.
Quranic Dream Interpretation
E.g. A person sees a rope in a dream. This is interpreted as your covenant with Allah, based on [3:73]:
"And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah, and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allah's Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided."
E.g. A ship is interpreted as salvation, based on [29:15]:
"Then We saved him and those with him in the ship, and made it (the ship) as an Ayah (a lesson, a warning, etc.) for the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)."
E.g. Wood is interpreted as hypocrites/hypocrisy, based on [63:4]:
"And when you look at them, their bodies please you; and when they speak, you listen to their words. They are as blocks of wood propped up. They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies, so beware of them. May Allah curse them! How are they denying (or deviating from) the Right Path."
E.g. A sick person is interpreted as hypocrisy as well, based on [2:10]:
"In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies."
E.g. Water is interpreted as Fitnah (Affliction) based on [72:16-17]:
"If they (non-Muslims) had believed in Allah, and went on the Right Way (i.e. Islam) We should surely have bestowed on them water (rain) in abundance."
"That We might try them thereby. And whosoever turns away from the Reminder of his Lord (i.e. this Quran, and practice not its laws and orders), He will cause him to enter in a severe torment (i.e. Hell)."
E.g. Eating uncooked meat indicates backbiting according to [49:12]:
"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful."
E.g. Bowing in a dream indicates that the person will repent to Allah, based on [38:24]:
"[Dawud (David)] said (immediately without listening to the opponent): "He has wronged you in demanding your ewe in addition to his ewes. And, verily, many partners oppress one another, except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and they are few." And Dawud (David) guessed that We have tried him and he sought Forgiveness of his Lord, and he fell down prostrate and turned (to Allah) in repentance."
E.g. Seeing yourself entering the Haram indicates security and safety as indicated in [3:97]:
"In it are manifest signs (for example), the Maqam (place) of Ibrahim (Abraham); whosoever enters it, he attains security. And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns)."
E.g. Seeing a dead person laughing indicates he will be forgiven, based on [80:38-39]:
"Some faces that Day, will be bright (true believers of Islamic Monotheism)."
"Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise)"
Dream Interpretation by Sunnah
If the symbol is difficult to find in the Qur'an, you look into the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ.
E.g. The crow is interpreted as an immoral person
E.g. Milk is interpreted as knowledge and the فطرة (Natural Disposition)
E.g. A shirt is interpreted with glad tidings and religion. Once the Prophet ﷺ saw people displayed before him in dream. Some had shirts up their breasts, others shorter than that, and Umar bin Khattabs shirt was dragging. And he ﷺ interpreted it as religion.
E.g. Fetters. There are two types of fetters: Ankles and Neck.
Fetters on ankles are good and indicate steadfastness in the religion.
E.g. Rain in a dream is interpreted as mercy. If the rain is unclean and muddy it indicates grief and sorrow.
E.g. Ice is also interpreted as grief
E.g. Butter and Honey indicates the Qur'an and Sunnah.
A man came to Ibn Sireen and said that he saw himself making the Athan in a dream. He said, "You will go for Hajj"
Another man came and said he saw himself making the Athan, and Ibn Sireen said, "Your hand will be cut off"
They had the same dream. But the interpretation is done according to the state of the people. The first man was pious, so Ibn Sireen interpreted his dream according to the verse in [22:27]:
"And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj)."
Ibn Sireen might have known that the other man was not righteous, so he interpreted it according to the verse in [12:70]:
"So when he had furnished them forth with their provisions, he put the (golden) bowl into his brother's bag, then a crier cried: "O you (in) the caravan! Surely, you are thieves!"
And the thieves hands are cut off.
Not anyone can interpret dreams; only those with knowledge of the Qur'an and Sunnah.
Word Interpretations
E.g. Seeing a hole
There is a proverb in Arabic: Whoever digs a hole for someone else will be the one who falls into it
So seeing a hole is interpreted as someone plotting against him.
E.g. Optimistic meaning of Names
Anas ibn Malik quoted Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saying "Last night I dreamt that we were in the house of Uqbah ibn Raafi and were brought some Ibn Taab fresh dates. I interpreted it as meaning that eminence in this world will be granted to us, a blessed hereafter, and that our religion has become good" [Sahih of Muslim, vol 4 p 1228 no 5647; Sunan of Abu Dawood, vol 3 p 1397 no 5007]
E.g. Interpretation by the opposite meaning
Such as fear interpreted as safety.
