Day 7: Surah Al-Hajj - (9/9/16) - Verses 46 to 55

7-12-1437H

Allah addresses the Prophet ﷺ: If you have been denied by the disbelievers, then the previous Messengers before you have also been denied. How many towns has Allah destroyed in the past because of their wrongdoing? And this is the consequence of ظلم; Allah destroyed the people of the towns, and all that was left was abandoned wells and castles.

Verse 46:

"Have they not travelled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind."

"أفلم يسيروا في الأرض"
Have you not travelled throughout the Land and seen all of this? Travel around the land, but travel with your heart and body: Take lessons from what you see.

"فتكون لهم قلوب يعقلون بها"
Look at the signs of Allah, and have hearts which reason and think.

"أو ءاذان يسمعون بها"
Or ears wherewith to hear by.

Hajj teaches us so many lessons.
Whether you travel for Hajj or anywhere else, travel with your ears and hearts, and you will learn so many lessons.

"فإنّها لا تعمى الأبصار و لأكن تعمى القلوب الّتي في الصُّدُور"
Blindness which harms is not blindness of the eyes, but blindness of the heart from the truth. This person does not want to hear and reason and benefit from what he sees, his concern is just the Dunya.

Verse 47:

"And they ask you to hasten on the torment! And Allah fails not His Promise. And verily, a day with your Lord is as a thousand years of what you reckon."

"و يستعجلونك بالعذاب"
The disbelievers do not reason with their hearts or hear with their ears, so out of their arrogance and stubbornness they ask the Prophet ﷺ for the punishment to be hastened. They speak without thinking properly.

"و لن يخلف الله وعده"
It is as if Allah is telling the Prophet ﷺ to not let it affect him. Allah will not fail in this promise. When the time comes, Allah will send His punishment, and no one will be able to stop it.

"و إنّ يوماً عند رَبِّك كألف سنة مّمّا تعدّون"
One day to Allah is like a thousand days with us. Whether the punishment befalls them or is delayed, it will come.

Allah is Forebearing. He does not hasten the punishment, but gives respite, in order that they may repent to Him.

Verse 48:

"And many a township did I give respite while it was given to wrong-doing. Then (in the end) I seized it (with punishment). And to Me is the (final) return (of all)."

"و كأيّن مِّن قرية أمليت لها"
Do not ask for the punishment to be hastened, take a lesson in everything. How many towns before has Allah given respite, although:

"و هي ظالمة"
They were wrongdoing. Allah did not give them more time while they were doing good and moving forward, Allah gave them more time while they were doing wrong. And this is out of the Forebearance of Allah. Allah does not seize in punishment straight away, He gives us respite.

In life, Allah sends different situations in our lives to nurture and reform us. If we do not learn it the first time, Allah repeats it again and again through different people and situations. Everything is a nurturing and lesson for us.

"ثمّ أخذتها و إليَّ المصير"
But there is an end. Do not rely on the amount of time you think you have. We do not know when we will leave this world. Take advantage and a lesson from everything that comes.

The wrongdoers need to be cautious; do not be deceived by the forebearance of Allah. In [82:6]:

"يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ الْكَرِيمِ"
"O man! What has made you careless concerning your Lord, the Most Generous?"

Verse 49:
"Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): "O mankind! I am (sent) to you only as a plain warner."

Allah did not say "بشير" (Giver of Glad Tidings), although the Prophet ﷺ is a giver of glad tidings as well.  This is suitable to the context. Allah is speaking about wrongdoing. Warnings push a person to act and take advantage of the time; it wakes him up.

And the Prophet ﷺ is a clear Warner, because he does not warn without proof or evidence.

Verse 50:
"So those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, for them is forgiveness and Rizqun Karim (generous provision, i.e. Paradise)."

Allah then mentions the good group: Those who truly believed + did righteous good deeds. Allah promised them forgiveness and an honourable provision: Paradise.

Verse 51:
"But those who strive against Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), to frustrate and obstruct them, they will be dwellers of the Hell-fire."

This group do not just disbelieve, but they strive against the evidence and proof, trying to cause the truth to fail, because they do not want to believe in it. And these are the Companions of the Hellfire.

In the following verses, Allah mentions the Shayateen, who strive against the Ayaat, and make those who do not follow the guidance and have sicknesses in their heart misunderstand the truth. They hear something completely different to what the Messenger said. If you want to hear the truth, you will hear the truth. There are people who hear the truth, but the Shaytan makes them misinterpret the truth, because of what is in their hearts. This is why we always need to purify our hearts.

Verse 52:
"Never did We send a Messenger or a Prophet before you, but; when he did recite the revelation or narrated or spoke, Shaitan (Satan) threw (some falsehood) in it. But Allah abolishes that which Shaitan (Satan) throws in. Then Allah establishes His Revelations. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise:"

"و ما أرسلنا من قبلك من رّسول و لا نبيّ إلا"
Allah did not send a Messenger or a Prophet before the Prophet ﷺ except that:

"إذا تمنّى"
Whenever he recited, reminded the people, commanded them, etc.

"ألقى الشَّيْطَان في أمنيّته"
The Shaytan will come in between and throw something into the recitation.
You speak, but the person hears something completely different to what you said. And this depends on the heart: If the heart seeks the truth, it will hear it. But if the person has desires in his heart, has a problem with the message, or sicknesses such as envy, etc. he will hear something else. The Shaytan throws it to prevent the people from listening to the truth.

"فينسخ الله ما يلقي الشيطان"
But Allah will remove whatever the Shaytan throws in. It will not be recorded; Allah will protect His revelation from getting mixed up. It is only temporary and affects what certain people hear; the real message will remain.

"ثّم يحكم الله ءاياته"
Allah will establish the truth.

"والله عليم حكيم"
Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. He puts everything in its perfect place. Even though the Shaytan is throwing words in, it is out of the Knowledge and Wisdom of Allah.

What is the wisdom behind this happening?

Verse 53:
"That He (Allah) may make what is thrown in by Shaitan (Satan) a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy and disbelief) and whose hearts are hardened. And certainly, the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.) are in an opposition far-off (from the truth against Allah's Messenger and the believers)."

"ليجعل ما يلقي الشَّيْطَان فتنة"
So that Allah will make the word the Shaytan throws in as a trial. This is a فتنة for some people, to show you what is in the hearts of the people.

It is a فتنة for two groups of people:

1) "للذين في قلوبهم مّرض "
People who have a sickness in their heart. When you are sick, you get affected very easily.  We need to continuously struggle to purify our hearts and make our goal Allah. Constant remembrance of Allah removes all the dirt in the heart. Lack of remembrance of Allah causes the heart to become sick. The good heart does not think bad, it only takes lessons.

Those whose hearts are hard. There is no effect of the reminders on them, so what the Shaytan throws in will become a greater proof against them. They will use what they hear as a reason to remain on falsehood. She may hear that it is Haraam to pluck eyebrows, but will interpret it as it is alright to. That is why we need to ask Allah to protect us from all trials, the apparent and the hidden, and learn faith before we learn the Qur'an.

"و إنّ الظَّالِمِين لفي شقاق بعيد"
And the wrongdoers are in a far off opposition.

Verse 54:
"And that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (this Quran) is the truth from your Lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility. And verily, Allah is the Guide of those who believe, to the Straight Path."

Allah then mentioned the opposite group, the one whom Allah protected:

"و ليعلم الذين أوتو العلم"
Those whom Allah has favoured by granting them knowledge. With acquiring the knowledge, the Angels will ask forgiveness for you, your faith will increase, sicknesses of the heart will disappear. Knowledge will grant you the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. They can see the difference between truth and falsehood.

"أنه الحق من ربك"
They know that Allah is the All-Wise; that even this falsehood is a test for them. Allah does not make things occur at random. They know that everything is a reformation for them.
A person who goes for Hajj while having knowledge is not the same as a person who goes for Hajj not having knowledge. They will go through many decrees, and when you know that Allah is nurturing, reforming, and testing you through them, it will make everything easy for you.

This shows us the importance of seeking knowledge.

"فيؤمنوا به "
They will believe in it. They will not question everything, they know everything is from Allah.
When they believe and their faith increases:

"فتخبت له قلوبهم"
Their hearts submit and surrender to the wisdom of Allah. They do not feel restless about that decree; their hearts are humble submitting to Allah. Their hearts are peaceful and humble. You will not go into the details of the decree and ask why this, why that, you will look at it as big perfect picture - it is all a test from Allah and out of His Wisdom.

"و إنّ الله لهاد الَّذِين ءامنوا إلى صراط مستقيم"
Allah is the One who guided them to do all of this. It is difficult to control your emotions during a situation. But Allah guided them because of their belief to the straight path.
That is why we ask Allah to guide us to the straight path. When you ask Allah for guidance, Allah will teach you knowledge and help you apply it.

Verse 55:
"And those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt about it (this Quran) until the Hour comes suddenly upon them, or there comes to them the torment of the Day after which there will be no night (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)."

"و لا يزال الذين كفروا في مرية منه حتى"
The disbelievers still and will always be in doubt concerning the revelation. The one who is not asking for guidance and is stubborn upon disbelief will always be in doubt until:

1) " تأتيهم السَّاعَة بغتة"
The Day of Judgement comes to them suddenly.

Or the punishment of the Day of Judgement will come to them

Only then will they realize they are wrongdoers. Nothing will change them until then if they do not change themselves.
