Day 6: Surah Al-Hajj - (8/9/16) - Verses 38 to 45

6-12-1437

In the following verses, Allah speaks about Jihad. And Hajj is like a Jihad (Struggle).

Verse 38:
"Truly, Allah defends those who believe. Verily! Allah likes not any treacherous ingrate to Allah [those who disobey Allah but obey Shaitan (Satan)]."

"إنّ الله يدافع عن الَّذِين ءامنوا"
Allah defends those who believe. This is a glad tidings from Allah to the believers;- because of your faith, Allah will avert all evil and troubles that come from your enemies.
And we have three kinds of enemies:
1) The evil people amongst men
2) The Shayateen
3) The evil of yourself

Do not rely on anyone to defend you, not even on yourself.
In life we go through different trials, where we are confronted and are afraid of various enemies. Just focus on your faith, and Allah will defend you. Remember and rely on Allah القوي, and He will give you strength to face your enemies.

"إنّ الله لا يحبّ كل خَوَّان كفور"
Allah does not love every treacherous, ungrateful person.

خَوَّان  - This is a betrayer. We have so many trusts which we need to fulfill whether it is the trust of religion, marriage, children, etc. Just focus on your faith, perform your duties, and do not betray them.

Allah hates those who are ungrateful towards the blessings of Allah.

Allah is the One who defends based on faith, so do not betray and do not be ungrateful in order to defend yourself.

Verse 39:
"Permission to fight is given to those (i.e. believers against disbelievers), who are fighting them, (and) because they (believers) have been wronged, and surely, Allah is Able to give them (believers) victory"

"أذن لِلَّذِين يقاتلون"
Allah defends you, so do not be treacherous or ungrateful. However you need to take the means when it is available; there is a struggle.
In the beginning of Islam, when the Muslims were in Makkah, they were forbidden to fight the disbelievers because they were weak. Allah commanded them to be patient upon the persecution.
When they emigrated to Madinah and had power and forces, Allah gave them permission to fight.
You need to choose the right time, you should not go into battle when there is a 100% chance of failure.

"بأنّهم ظلموا"
They fight because they were treated unjustly. The disbelievers prevented them from practicing their religion and persecuted them.

"و إنّ الله على نصرهم لقدير"
And Allah is Able to grant them victory.
So take the means, but never rely on it; seek Allahs Help.

Verse 40:

"Those who have been expelled from their homes unjustly only because they said: "Our Lord is Allah." - For had it not been that Allah checks one set of people by means of another, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, wherein the Name of Allah is mentioned much would surely have been pulled down. Verily, Allah will help those who help His (Cause). Truly, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty."

Allah explains in this verse the type of injustice these Muslimeen suffered:

"الَّذِين أخرجوا من ديارهم"
They had been driven out of their homes by being pressured to through harm, persecution, and affliction. Although they left themselves, the person who is the reason behind their leaving is responsible. You have to look at the cause of the action.

We should be careful with our actions and utterances; do not allow what you do or say be a Fitnah for anyone else.

"بغير حق"
"إلا أن يقول ربّنا الله"
The only reason that made them persecute the Muslims was because that they said their Rabb is Allah.
In the end, the truth will always be victorious. This is the Sunnah of Allah.

"و لولا دفع الله النَّاس بعضهم ببعض لّهدّمت صوامع و بيع و صلوات و مساجد يذكر فيها اسم الله كثيرا"
Allah is the One who defends the believers. If Allah had not stopped people from each other and averted the harm of the disbelievers, by subjecting armies and people to defend the religion, all the various places of worship where the Name of Allah is mentioned a lot would be demolished.

And this is the purpose behind Jihad - to protect the religion of the people.

"و ليينصرنّ الله من ينصره"
And Allah will give victory to anyone who gives victory to the religion. And this applies even on a small scale. If you are a person who magnifies Allah, makes apparent the symbols of Allah, and you practice your religion, you are participating in giving victory to the religion through your voice and example, although Allah does not need victory. And because of that, Allah will surely give you victory.

Everything comes back to القصد. If you fight for yourself, you will not attain victory. If you are fighting for Allah, Allah will grant you victory.

"إن الله لقوي عزيز"
Get your strength from believing in Allah القوي العزيز. He is Able to give you the strength, might, honour, power.

In life you struggle against yourself, the Shaytan, and evil people. If you struggle for the sake of Allah, He will surely grant you victory. In [29:69]:

"As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allah's Religion - Islamic Monotheism). And verily, Allah is with the Muhsinun (good doers)."

Allah then describes the one who gives victory to the religion. Not everyone who claims to support to the religion is actually supporting it.

Verse 41:
"Those (Muslim rulers) who, if We give them power in the land, (they) order for Iqamat-as-Salat. [i.e. to perform the five compulsory congregational Salat (prayers) (the males in mosques)], to pay the Zakat and they enjoin Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism and all that Islam has forbidden) [i.e. they make the Quran as the law of their country in all the spheres of life]. And with Allah rests the end of (all) matters (of creatures)."

"الذين إن مّكنّاهم في الأرض"
Those, who when established in the land:

1) "أقاموا الصَّلَاة" - Establish the Prayer

Pay the Zakat

Enjoin the Good

Forbid the Evil

A person who is established in the Land can focus on his duties.
That is why Jihad exists;- to maintain security, establish yourself, spread the religion, so an Islamic Society can be established and everyone can worship Allah. Hajj plays a role in building the Ummah, and Jihad plays a role in building the Ummah. You cannot build a society far away from Belief.

"و لله العاقبة الأمور"
And to Allah rests the end of all matters. The end is always good for the one whom Allah supports. If you look at the stories of the Prophets and Messengers, they fought and struggled, but victory was always on their side at the end.

Verse 42-44:

"And if they belie you (O Muhammad ﷺ), so were belied the Prophets before them, (by) the people of Nuh (Noah), 'Ad and Thamud,"

"And the people of Ibrahim (Abraham) and the people of Lout (Lot)"

"And the dwellers of Madyan (Midian); and belied was Musa (Moses), but I granted respite to the disbelievers for a while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My Punishment (against their wrong-doing)."

Allah addresses the Prophet ﷺ, telling him he is not the first Messenger who has been belied. There are always people who belie. It is the Sunnah of Allah. The People of Nuh, Ad, Thamud, Ibrahim, Lut, Shua'yb all denied their Messengers. And Musa is mentioned separately because of Pharoah.

"فأمليت للكافرين"
Victory might take time because Allah gives a respite to the disbelievers - they may repent and change, but you need to be patient upon victory.

"ثمّ أخذتهم"
Then, after Allah sends all the means to change them in addition to the respite, and they do not change, Allah will seize them in punishment.

"فكيف كان نكير"
And no punishment is comparable to the punishment of Allah.

Verse 45:

"And many a township have We destroyed while it was given to wrong-doing, so that it lies in ruins (up to this day), and (many) a deserted well and lofty castles!"

"فكأيّن مِّن قرية أهلكناها و هي ظالمة"
Allah is addressing the Prophet ﷺ: How many villages has He destroyed with punishment because of their wrongdoing. Sooner or later Allah will grant you victory and support, and destroy the wrongdoers. The believers are always victorious in the end.
Allah does not destroy a town unjustly; it is because they committed

When Allah destroyed these towns it became upside down houses and abandoned wells and lofty castles. All these ruins remain, but with no one living there, because of their wrongdoing.

How will you establish a nation? On belief and obedience to Allah.
