بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم
16-12-1437H
There are three Hadiths which indicate three different times to say this دعاء:
1) The Prophet ﷺ said this دعاء in prostration
2) While walking to the Masjid
This is suitable to this state because you are walking to the prayer, and the Prophet ﷺ said:
"..الصلاة نور..."
"...Prayer is a light.."
You are asking Allah to benefit you with the prayer. Teach your boys to say this Dua while walking to the Masjid.
3) The Last Third of the Night
"اللهم اجعل في قلبي نورا"
The first thing the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to place light is the heart. Because the heart is the king of all organs. If it is filled with light, the rest of the limbs will follow.
The he mentioned the routes to the heart:
1) "و في بصري نوراً"
2) "و في سمعي نوراً"
This means you do not see except which pleases Allah. You do not hear except that which pleases Allah. Your limbs become a light for you,
Then the Prophet ﷺ asked for 6 directions to be filled with light:
1) "و عن يميني نوراً" - On my right
2) "و عن يساري نوراً" - On my left
3) "و فوقي نوراً" - Above me
4) "و تحتي نوراً" - Below me
5) "و أمامي نوراً" - In front of me
6) "و خلفي نوراً" - Behind me
"و أعظم لي نورا"
And make the light greater for me.
In the other narrations:
"و اجعل لي نورا على نور"
You remember your grave. You remember the Day of Judgement. It is total darkness. Then Allah will distribute light to the believers depending on the amount of faith they have. And Allah will give the hypocrites light, but then take it away. In [57:12-14]:
"On the Day you shall see the believing men and the believing women their light running forward before them and by their right hands. Glad tidings for you this Day! Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever! Truly, this is the great success!"
"On the Day when the hypocrites men and women will say to the believers: "Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!" It will be said: "Go back to your rear! Then seek a light!" So a wall will be put up between them, with a gate therein. Inside it will be mercy, and outside it will be torment."
"(The hypocrites) will call the believers: "Were we not with you?" The believers will reply: "Yes! But you led yourselves into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction; you doubted (in Faith); and you were deceived by false desires, till the Command of Allah came to pass. And the chief deceiver (Satan) deceived you in respect of Allah."
The supplications of the believers on that day will be asking Allah to perfect their light. Because they will be afraid, seeing people around them having light, then losing it. And they will ask Allah to forgive them, because if Allah forgives you, then all good will happen to you. In [66:8]:
"O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will remit from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise) the Day that Allah will not disgrace the Prophet (Muhammad ﷺ) and those who believe with him, their Light will run forward before them and with (their Records Books of deeds) in their right hands they will say: "Our Lord! Keep perfect our Light for us [and do not put it off till we cross over the Sirat (a slippery bridge over the Hell) safely] and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are Able to do all things."
