Surah AlHujurat - Class 5 - (14/8/16)

11-11-1437H

Recap:
-> Surah AlHujurat is a Madaniyyah Surah, revealed in 10AH.

O you who believe" is repeated 5 times throughout the Surah. Allah is addressing the believers in this Surah with rules, regulations, and prohibitons.

-> Belief and Taqwa is repeated throughout the Surah as well. Taqwa is a fruit of increased faith.

-> The Theme of the Surah: Building the Muslim Community

-> The Division of the Surah:
#1 - Introduction (Verses 1-3)
#2 - The foundations for building a Muslim Community (Verses 4-13)
#3 - Faith  (Verses 14-17)
#4 - Conclusion (Verse 18)

#1 - Introduction (Verses 1-3)

-> Allah commands us with Taqwa and Making Reconciliation in  thrice each in this Surah.

-> The first prohibiton in the Muslim community is to not put yourself ahead of Allah and the Messenger ﷺ. You need to follow. That is why the two conditions for a deed to be accepted is sincerity and following the Prophet ﷺ.
In this context Allah reminds us that He is Seeing and Hearing. If you increase your faith in this fact about Allah, you would not make a decision in advance to Him and His Messenger ﷺ.

-> The second prohibition is to not raise your voice in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This applies to us now, even after the Prophet ﷺ has passed away. Do not raise your voice when a Hadith is being mentioned, when you are in Masjid an-Nabawi, etc.

-> The third prohibition is to not call the Prophet ﷺ as we call one another. We should respect and glorify him, because he is the Messenger of Allah. We love and magnify the Messenger ﷺ out of love and magnification of Allah.

The amount you follow the Messenger ﷺ is a criteria by which you can judge your love of Allah. In [3:31]:

"Say (O Muhammad ﷺ to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

-> In Verse 3:

"Verily! Those who lower their voices in the presence of Allah's Messenger ﷺ, they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for piety. For them is forgiveness and a great reward."

Allah tests our hearts, because it is the place where Taqwa resides. The more Taqwa you have, the easier your tests will be.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Temptations and trials will be presented to men’s hearts like the way a reed mat is woven, stick by stick. And any heart which is filled by them will have a black mark put into it. But any heart which rejects them will have a white mark put into it.

The result will be that there are two types of hearts: one white like a white stone that will not be harmed by any turmoil and temptation so long as the heavens and earth endure; and the heart black and dust-colored like a vessel which is overturned, not recognizing what is good or rejecting what is evil but only being impregnated with passion.” [Muslim]

The person with the white heart kept passing the tests with Allah until no فتنة (Trials) will deviate him. The person with the black heart has a heart like an upside down glass. You cannot pour any water into it. This is because he kept failing the test with Allah, until Allah put a lock in his heart, and he does not listen to anything. That is why Allah said in [67:10]:

"And they will say: "Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!"

They had hearing, but did not use it, so they became like those who did not have it at all.

#2 - The Foundations of building a Muslim Community (Verses 4-13)

Verse 4-5:

"Verily! Those who call you from behind the dwellings, most of them have no sense."

"And if they had patience till you could come out to them, it would have been better for them. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

-> The more manners you have, the more intelligence you have.
-> Rule 1: Be Patient

-> The Muslim practices good manners not to get any worldly benefit, but out of worship to Allah; hoping that it will be a reason for him to enter Paradise.
The Prophet ﷺ said:

"I guarantee a house in Jannah for one who gives up arguing, even if he is in the right; and I guarantee a home in the middle of Jannah for one who abandons lying even for the sake of fun; and I guarantee a house in the highest part of Jannah for one who has good manners." [Abu Dawud].

The Prophet ﷺ was asked: ‘What most admits people to Paradise?’ He said: "Piety and good manners" [Ibn Majah]

Verse 6:

"O you who believe! If a rebellious evil person comes to you with a news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful to what you have done."

-> Verify news before accusing others or falsely believing it and spreading it. Be patient.
-> We require patience in order to attain good characteristics
-> One of the attributes of the فاسقين is that they spread rumours.

Verse 7:

"And know that, among you there is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If he were to obey you (i.e. follow your opinions and desires) in much of the matter, you would surely be in trouble, but Allah has endeared the Faith to you and has beautified it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness and disobedience (to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ hateful to you. These! They are the rightly guided ones."

-> They knew the Prophet ﷺ was amongst them, but needed to be reminded. The Prophet ﷺ would get revelation from Allah if one of them lied.

-> It is one of the favours of Allah that He sent a Prophet ﷺ to us. With whatever the Prophet ﷺ commanded us, he chose the easy way. You do not know the outcome of your choices or questions.

It was narrated that ‘Ali said: “When the following was revealed: “And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for whoever can bear the way.” [3:97] They asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, is Hajj every year?’ He remained silent. They asked: ‘Is it every year?’ He said: ‘No. If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory.’ Then the following was revealed: “O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble.’” [5:101] [Ibn Majah]

-> Allah is the One who endeared faith to you and beautified in your heart. This is a knowledge which should be clear in your heart. When you know this, you will ask Allah alone to endear and beautify faith in your heart and the hearts of your children.

Verse 8:

"(This is) a Grace from Allah and His Favour. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."

-> Making faith something beloved to you and making disobedience hated to you is a great favour from Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah gives worldly things to those whom He loves and those whom He does not love, but He gives religion and true faith only to those whom He loves, so he who is given religion by Allah has been loved by Him" [Musnad Imam Ahmed]

Allah is All-Knowing and Wise. He will not give faith to those who do not deserve it.

Verse 9:

"And if two parties or groups among the believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them both, but if one of them rebels against the other, then fight you (all) against the one that which rebels till it complies with the Command of Allah; then if it complies, then make reconciliation between them justly, and be equitable. Verily! Allah loves those who are equitable."

-> Just because they fight, it does not mean they cease to be believers.
-> Allah commands us to be just when we make reconciliation. Do not show favoritism.
-> Our Religion is complete, it covers every single aspect of our life and is applicable to every person. All you have to do is follow it.

Verse 10:

"The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic religion). So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy."

-> The believers are brothers, because they have the strongest bond - the bond of Religion and Faith. Religion is so imperative in our lives, that a blood brother or sister will not receive inheritance if they are not a Muslim like you.

-> The rights of a Muslim on you are 6, and you will be asked about them on the Day of Judgement.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Verily, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would say on the Day of Resurrection: O son of Adam, I was sick but you did not visit Me. He would say: O my Lord; how could I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine was sick but you did not visit him and were you not aware of this that if you had visited him, you would have found Me by him?

O son of Adam, I asked food from you but you did not feed Me.
He would say: My Lord, how could I feed You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He said: Didn't you know that such and such servant of Mine asked food from you but you did not feed him, and were you not aware that if you had fed him you would have found him by My side?

(Allah would again say: ) O son of Adam, I asked drink from you but you did not provide Me.
He would say: My Lord, how could I provide You when You are the Lord of the worlds? Thereupon He would say: Such and such of servant of Mine asked you for a drink but you did not provide him, and had you provided him drink you would have found him near Me." [Muslim]

-> The more Taqwa you have, the more mercy you will get.
-> رحمة means attaining every good and having every evil repelled from you.

Verse 11:

"O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former, nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it, to insult one's brother after having Faith [i.e. to call your Muslim brother (a faithful believer) as: "O sinner", or "O wicked", etc.]. And whosoever does not repent, then such are indeed Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.)."

-> What is the connection between this verse and the previous verses?
Allah forbids us from committing the following sins, because they are means which lead to the believers fighting. This is a warning from Allah.
1) Scoffing at one another
Allah specifies women in particular, because it tends to occur between them.

2) Defaming one another
3) Insulting one another with nicknames

Allah mentions what could lead to these sins and inevitably fighting between Muslims in Verse 12:

"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful."

1) Avoid suspicion and bad thinking of each other
A woman was sitting in the Haram, near the clinic. She saw people going inside the clinic and she said  to herself, "They're just claiming they are sick". When it was Isha time, her blood pressure went very low, and they took her to that same clinic. This is a message from Allah, to teach her not to think evil of people.

When you suspect others, it will lead you to the second step:
2) Spying
When you spy, it will lead you to:
3) Backbiting

These are all Major sins.

Allah set a parable for backbiting, in order to make you hate that sin. This is why Allah began the parable with "أيحب؟" (Would you like to?) - which means you should hate to backbite.
A man backbit another person in an assembly, and the Scholar who was present warned him saying  "Remember the day they will put cotton in your eyes and ears (i.e. when they prepare you to enter your grave)" When you remember this fact, you will prevent yourself from committing sins.

When people are backbiting, you should defend the honour of your brother or sister, or leave the assembly. If you stayed sitting with them, you would share in the guilt.

The more Taqwa you practice, the more you will stop yourself from these sins, like a reign on a horse.

Do not lose hope. As long as you are in this Dunya, the gate of repentance is open. Resolve never to go back to the sin, and Allah will forgive the past, and if you were truly sincere - He would turn the bad deeds into good deeds.

Verse 13:
"O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2). Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."

O mankind!"
Allah is not just addressing the believers, but mankind in its entirety. Because the following is not just restricted to the believers:

We have created you from a male and a female"

"و جعلناكم شعوبا و قبائل لتعارفوا" - "and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another."

And then Allah lays down a rule: "إن أكرمكم عند الله أتقاكم" - "Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa"

We should live this rule in our lives. If you want to be honourable with Allah, increase in Taqwa.
We should teach ourselves and our children to not judge people by the certificates and amount of wealth they have. This is the criteria of the Dunya, not the criteria with Allah. We are all the same, from the same man and woman. Taqwa is the criteria for honour with Allah.

“A man passed by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘What do you say about this man?’ They said: ‘We agree with your opinion concerning him. We say: He is one of the noblest of people. If he proposes marriage, his proposal deserves to be accepted; and if he intercedes, his intercession deserves to be accepted; and if he speaks, he deserves to be listened to.’

The Prophet (ﷺ) remained silent, and another man passed by. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘What do you think about this man?’ We said: ‘By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, this is one of the poor Muslims. If he proposes marriage, he does not deserve to get married; and if he intercedes, his intercession does not deserve to be accepted; and if he speaks, he does not deserve to be listened to.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘This one is better than an earthful of (men like) the other man.’” [Ibn Majah]

The difference between the two was the difference in their Taqwa and Faith.

Sa'eed Ibn Al-Mussayib, one of the Tabi'een, was a great Scholar and had a daughter who had learned from him. He refused to marry his daughter to the Khalifah, Abdul-Malik ibn Marwan, and instead married her to one of his righteous students who was poor and did not even have a house, 'Abdullah ibn Wada'ah. He looked for the hereafter, the Deen, and faith for his daughter. He protected his daughter from this world. You find people who were once good in their religion, but if they have wealth they get busy with the Dunya and forget Allah who gave them the gift.

Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."
Allah knows you and your level of Taqwa.

#3 - Faith  (Verses 14-17)

Verse 14:

"The bedouins say: "We believe." Say: "You believe not but you only say, 'We have surrendered (in Islam),' for Faith has not yet entered your hearts. But if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not decrease anything in reward for your deeds. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

One of the Bedouin tribes, Banu Asad, converted to Islam and kept reminding the Prophet ﷺ of their belief and asking for charity. Allah knew their intention; there were people ho became Muslim after hearing that the Prophet ﷺ gave money. So Allah revealed this verse: Do not claim you are believers, you are still Muslims.

The Deen is comprised of three ranks: Islam, Eeman, Ihsan. Allah knows which rank you have reached. They were only Muslims, they had not become believers with full faith.

What is the difference between Islam and Eeman?
The Pillars of Islam (Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, Fasting, Hajj) are outward actions
The Pillars of Eeman (Belief in Allah, the Angels, the Books, the Messengers, the Last Day, the Qadar) are inside the heart. And only Allah knows about your faith.

The more you do good deeds, regardless if they are deeds of the tongue, limbs, heart - you will increase in faith.

If you obey Allah and His Messenger, you will get two rewards:
1) Allah will not decrease anything in reward. You will get the full reward.
2) Allah will forgive you.

They claimed that they were believers, so Allah describes to them the attributes of the true believers in Verse 15:

"Only those are the believers who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and afterward doubt not but strive with their wealth and their lives for the Cause of Allah. Those! They are the truthful."

They believe in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ
They believe without any doubt.
This is why one of the conditions of لا اله الا الله is certainty, as opposed to doubt. You should be certain about your faith, your religion, about what the Prophet ﷺ said. The four conditions of belief in the Prophet ﷺ are:
a) Following his commandments
b) Abstaining from his prohibitions
c) Believing in everything the Prophet ﷺ said
d) Worshipping Allah according to how he taught us

There are people who doubt. If you tell them that there is a Hadith which says there is a cure in camels urine, they will ask you if you are serious, tell you how it does not apply nowadays, etc. Only now Scientists have discovered that camels urine can cure cancer.
Do not doubt in your religion, you should doubt their theories. Allah has covered everything in our religion up to and about the Day of Judgement. The more you learn about the religion, the firmer you will be, and the more you will be able to repel the doubts.

Allah set a parable in [22:11]  about people who are on the edge. People who hear a doubt, and fall.

"And among mankind is he who worships Allah as it were, upon the very edge (i.e. in doubt); if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts back to disbelief after embracing Islam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss."

They strive with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah
Allah preceded life with wealth. Some people cannot go physically for Jihad, so they abstain from giving money as well. Allah reminds them, giving your wealth for Jihad is like going for it.

They are the Truthful
They are truthful in their faith. Faith is not a mere claim on the tongue. It resides in the heart, and only Allah knows about it.

Verse 16:

"Say: "Will you inform Allah about your religion? While Allah knows all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and Allah is All-Aware of everything."

You do not need to inform Allah of your belief, He knows. It is a bad manner with Allah to do so.
This is why the Prophet ﷺ forbade us from praising anyone to their face.

The Prophet (ﷺ) heard someone praising another and exaggerating in his praise. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "You have ruined or cut the man's back (by praising him so much)." [Bukhari]

You may cause person to admire in himself qualities he does not have, and forget that Allah blessed him with that.

Abu Bakr reported that a man was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and someone praised him. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Woe to you! You have cut off the head of your companion!" and he repeated that several times. He went on, "If one of you must praise someone, he should say, 'I consider that so-and-so is such-and-such.' Allah is the One who will take account of him if he thinks that he is indeed like that, No one can appropriate Allah's right to attest to someone's character." [Adab Al-Mufrad]

You can only know the outward appearance of the person. Allah knows what is in their hearts, and he knows how they will end their lives.

The Prophet (ﷺ) looked at a man fighting against the pagans and he was one of the most competent persons fighting on behalf of the Muslims. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Let him who wants to look at a man from the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire, look at this (man)." Another man followed him and kept on following him till he (the fighter) was injured and, seeking to die quickly, he placed the blade tip of his sword between his breasts and leaned over it till it passed through his shoulders (i.e., committed suicide)."

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "A person may do deeds that seem to the people as the deeds of the people of Paradise while in fact, he is from the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire: and similarly a person may do deeds that seem to the people as the deeds of the people of the (Hell) Fire while in fact, he is from the dwellers of Paradise. Verily, the (results of) deeds done, depend upon the last actions." [Bukhari]
