بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"...وَالرُّؤْيَا ثَلاَثٌ فَالرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ بُشْرَى مِنَ اللَّهِ وَالرُّؤْيَا مِنْ تَحْزِينِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَالرُّؤْيَا مِمَّا يُحَدِّثُ بِهَا الرَّجُلُ نَفْسَهُ..."
And dreams are of three types:
1) The righteous dream which is good news from Allah,
2) Dreams in which the Shaithan frightens someone,
3) Dreams about something that has happened to the man himself.
Dreams from the Shaytan
This comes in different forms and generally causes distress and fear to the believer.
Just as the Shaytan whispers and suggests evil thoughts while we are awake, he whispers and suggests it in the form of dreams while we are asleep.
The Shaytan scares you with nightmares, and then uses the dream against you; to whisper in your heart. Ignore it, it will not harm you.
Examples of Bad Dreams from the Shaytan:
-> Dreaming that a beloved person to you passes away
-> Dreaming that you are committing a sin
This causes distress and disturbs the righteous person. It is from of the Shaytan.
-> Seeing Angels commanding you to do something not legislated by Allah
-> Dreams that cause fear your heart - like dreams where you fall from a height, or are in a confined place, or where someone is chasing you.
-> Sometimes seeing animals, insects.
-> Hearing a voice saying, "I am Allah" and this voice commanding him to do something wrong. This is what happened to Abdul-Qadir Al-Jilanee. Ibn Taymiya mentioned that he was walking and saw a cloud. A voice from that cloud said, "I am Allah, you have reached a status where you do not need to pray and all the obligations have been waived from you" Abdul-Qadir Al-Jilanee said, "You are the accursed Shaytan"
If the Prophet ﷺ prayed until the end of his life, who are we to stop praying?
-> Seeing the Prophet ﷺ with a description other than his true form, which has been mentioned in the authentic narrations.
What to do when you see a bad dream
-> Seek refuge with Allah from its evil:
-> Spit three times on your left
-> Pray two Rak'ahs if you are able
-> Change your sleeping position
-> Do not speak about it to anyone
