Fiqh of Dream Interpretation - Class Five - (14/8/16)

بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"...وَالرُّؤْيَا ثَلاَثٌ فَالرُّؤْيَا الصَّالِحَةُ بُشْرَى مِنَ اللَّهِ وَالرُّؤْيَا مِنْ تَحْزِينِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَالرُّؤْيَا مِمَّا يُحَدِّثُ بِهَا الرَّجُلُ نَفْسَهُ..."
And dreams are of three types:
1) The righteous dream which is good news from Allah,
2) Dreams in which the Shaithan frightens someone,
3) Dreams about something that has happened to the man himself.

الرُّؤْيَا مِمَّا يُحَدِّثُ بِهَا الرَّجُلُ نَفْسَهُ - Mental Reflections

Most of our dreams are of this type. The activities we engage in throughout the day, the matters we wish for, the incidents we go through, our worries, etc, replay in our dreams. These are neither from Allah nor the Shaytan and have no interpretation.

The Punishment for those who lie about their dreams:

The Scholars said that lying about a dream is worse than a lie about something in wakefulness. Because lying about a dream is lying about Allah, and lying about prophethood - as true dreams are related to Prophethood.

In [11:18]:
"And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah. Such will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord!" No doubt! the curse of Allah is on the Zalimun (polytheists, wrong-doers, oppressors, etc.)."

This Hadith indicates that lying about a dream is a Major Sin.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "A dream is hanging on the leg of a bird (and in another narration on the wing of the bird) as soon as it is interpreted, it happens as it was interpreted.” [Ibn Majah and Abu Dawud, Authenticated by Al-Albani]

The dreams will occur to how your interpretation is, so we are advised only to tell it to the Scholar, the One Beloved to you, the Advisor, etc.
However, Bukhari رحمه الله and others said it will only occur if interpreted correctly. This is because Allah made you see that dream to send a message to you,

When is the best time to tell the dream? The Sunnah is to tell it after the Fajr time. This is because the persons mind is fresh and can remember what he has seen in detail. So is the mind of the interpreter.

Ibn AlQayyim said that there truest dreams are usually seen at the Sahr time (before the dawn), because this is the time when Allah descends to the nearest heavens.
Other Scholars, such as Ibn Sireen said this does not mean that the dreams seen at other times cannot be true.

The Scholars said that the person usually remembers the true dream in detail. If you wake up and cannot collect the events in the dream, it means you did not see a true dream and it is better not to talk about it.
