The Prayer of the Traveler - (17/716)

بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Our religion makes worship easy during the time of difficulty. We are allowed to combine and shorten our prayers during sickness and travel.

What distance do I have to cross in order to be considered a traveler? According to Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله, you are considered a traveler during any trip you call a travel.

Ibn Baz رحمه الله said the distance has to be at least 80 kilometers.

How long can I shorten my prayer for? Some people travel for 6 months and shorten their prayer the whole time. You're not considered a traveler, you're a resident there. The traveler is one who goes for a need and goes back. That's why Ibn Baz limited it to four days.
Other Scholars said that the Prophet ﷺ went to Makkah for 20 days and shortened his prayer the whole time. So there's a difference of opinion.

If you have a house in the country, you can't shorten your prayer, because you're a resident there.

When can I begin shortening my prayer?
You should not shorten the prayer while you are still in your house. You can begin shortening your prayer at the airport which is outside the city. In Kuwait, the airport isn't outside the city, it's only ten or twenty minutes away, so you can not shorten the prayer there.

What Sunnah prayers do I leave?
The traveler does not leave the Witr prayer and the Sunnah of Fajr. But you leave the Rawatib.

How do I combine?
Combining Thuhr and Asr, praying them in one of the two times. (Praying 2+2)
Combing Maghrib and Isha, praying them in one of the two times. (Praying 3+2)

But this is only when you are actually traveling; in the car, or the plane, etc. When you arrive at the place you do not combine and shorten. You can shorten, but you should not combine.

And keep in mind that you can not combine the Asr with the Jum'ah prayer. Because Jum'ah is not Thuhr, it is a special prayer on its own.

When is the best time to travel?
It is Sunnah to travel on a Thursday and the beginning of the Day.

What is the Dua I should say?
It's a supplication which contains belief. Allah is your Companion, No One can make traveling easy for you except Him. Attach yourself to Allah. He puts needs in you because He wants to hear your voice, to take our worship from your heart.

Mistakes during Travel
1) Shortening the prayer while at home
2) Neglecting asking about the direction of the Qibla
3) Thinking they have to pray exactly after the Athan. You can pray at any time within the limit.
4) When flying for 9+ hours pray the prayer in the plane, don't delay it until you get off the plane. Find out the timings of the prayer in the different countries you stop in before you travel.

[According to the opinion of Ibn Baz]
