The Dua of Distress - Class 2 - (24/716)

If you have feelings towards the distress of other Muslims (i.e.feel their pain) you will be rewarded for it. Because we are all brothers and sisters, as mentioned in Surah AlHujurat.

The دعاء of Distress

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say at times of distress:

Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah al-‘Atheem al-Haleem, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabb al-‘Arsh al-‘Atheem, la ilaaha ill-Allaah Rabb ul-samawaati wa Rabb ul-ard wa Rabb ul-‘Arsh il-kareem

(There is no god but Allaah, the All-Powerful, the Forbearing; there is no god but Allaah, Lord of the mighty Throne; there is no god but Allaah, Lord of heaven, Lord of earth, and Lord of the noble Throne).”

[Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6345; Muslim, 2730.]

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say at times of distress..."
The Prophet ﷺ did not command us to say this Dua, He himself used to say it when he went through times of distress. The Prophet ﷺ himself faced tests and calamities, which shows us that he is a human being just like us. He faced so many calamities making Da'wah for this religion, this is why he has the highest rank in Paradise. Do not think you will always live happily in this life. As long as you are in this life, you will face calamities.

"لا اله الا الله"
This is repeated throughout the Dua. It is كلمة التوحيد. It means "I believe there is no One Perfect in all His Attributes Who deserved to be loved, magnified, and worshipped, except Allah"

When you know that no One is Perfect in all His Attributes except Allah, you should know that no One knows about your difficulty, can remove it, can help you, can give you comfort, except Allah عز و جل. You are calling the One who is Perfect and you are reminding yourself of this. Anything you want and need, Allah can do it. And this distress is from Allah, so it is good because He is Perfect in all His Attributes. You do not have anyone you worship, glorify, love, except Him.

"العظيم"
This humbles you in front of Allah. He is Majestic in all His Attributes. Everything is easy in front of Allah. He can remove this calamity in seconds. You are putting your needs in front of Allah. No one can bring your needs to you except Allah. All the people are weak, except Allah. All the people will die, except Allah.

"الحليم"
Allah is Forebearing. Allah does not punish His Slaves immediately, He gives them respite and opens the door of repentance for them.

This is to remind yourself that the calamity might have occurred because of your sin. Allah is الحليم, He did not punish me, He gave me this calamity to remind me to repent.
Calamities are a mercy from Allah. If you lived life without calamities, you would never remember Allah. Allah afflicts us so that we go back to him, to warn us, etc. Allah does not want us to go down in ranks, and that is more important than always living happily. The higher your rank with Allah, the more Allah will remind you of your sins by afflicting you with distresses.

Remind yourself that everything Allah decrees is good, and the distress occurred because of your sin.

"لا اله الا الله"
Again, you remind yourself, that nothing can save you except Allah. No one can remove you from your distress except Allah. The means are in the hands of Allah. Allah gave you the means and it is He who gives you the fruits of the means. Do not rely on the means, rely on Allah.
If the thought of "go to so and so, ask so and so, complain to so and so" comes, then drive it away with I have no one to complain to except Allah. No one is going to save me except Allah. No one will remove my distress except Allah.
In another Dua "الله الله ربي لا أشرك به شيء"

Do not think of anyone except Allah. You want a husband for your daughter, ask Allah. You have a sickness, ask Allah, He will heal you.

Look at what Ibrahim عليه السلام said in [26:78-80]:

"Who has created me, and it is He Who guides me;"

"And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink."

"And when I am ill, it is He who cures me."

"رب العرش العظيم ، لا إله إلا الله رب السموات ورب الأرض ورب العرش الكريم"
Allah runs the affairs of the heavens and earth, do you think that He can not run your life? Do you think He can not take care of your distress? And the Throne is mentioned because it is the biggest creation of Allah.
