(1/5/16) - Other examples of seeking the عزة from other than Allah - العزيز 17

بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم

All the عزة belongs to Allah, and He grants it to whomever He wills. So we should seek it from Him alone.
The hypocrites sought العزة from the disbelievers. They don't fulfill الولاء و البراء which is one of the basic fundamentals of faith.

Other examples in the Qur'an of those who seek العزة from other than Allah:

2) In [19:81]:

Why do they take other than Allah as ءالهة? Because they are seeking intercession, support, glory, honour from these false deities.

In Verse 82:

But they're wrong. These so called gods will deny their worship tomorrow. Even if they're idols, Allah will give them the ability to speak on the Day of Judgement, and they'll disassociate themselves with enmity against the مشركين.

3) Seeking العزة through worldly riches
In [18:34]:

Allah granted the owner of the gardens in Surah AlKahf two gardens of fruits, grapes, rivers, and he boasted to his companion (who didn't have) that he had more servants, more children, more power, and abundant properties.

How did Allah deal with him?
In Verse 42:

Don't think this doesn't occur nowadays. It happens, but in different forms.

E.g. People who travel to other countries, and then come back for visits. They don't out rightly say that they're better than you, but you'll hear things like, "We have this there, we do this over there, etc" to people whom they deem have lesser than them. Ask yourself why you're saying this to that specific person who doesn't have what you do. What's your aim?

E.g. It could happen to a co-wife. One has children and the other doesn't. The one who has children feels like she's more honorable than the one who doesn't. She doesn't know that Allah is able to deal with her as he did with the owner of the two gardens. He can take her children away and give the other more.

E.g. The married feel superior to the unmarried.

It's all about "أكثر مالا و أعز نفرا"
This scenario repeats itself throughout our lives in different forms. But reality is, honour doesn't come through these things. Allah can take what you have away. He can disgrace you and honour the other person. He's able to turn the situation around. Because العزة is in Allah's hands.

What is the praiseworthy kind of تعزز?
Seeking عزة is natural in humans. No one can blame you for seeking it. But since Allah is العزيز, the true owner, the powerful, the dominant, then one shouldn't seek العزة except from Him. And, we have to seek it according to how Allah legislated it in the Qur'an and Sunnah.

In [63:8]:

"و لله العزة"
1) العزة is one of Allah's attributes
2) It belongs to Allah and no one else
3) He grants it to whomever He wills

Therefore, we should only seek it from Allah, and no one else.

"و لرسوله"
This is by elevating and honoring his religion; making it superior over all the other religions.
When the disbelievers criticize the Prophet ﷺ, know that Allah honoured his Messenger and made his religion prevalant over others. Let them say whatever they want to say, Allah already honoured him.

"و للمؤمنين"
The عزة is only for the believers. The hypocrites and the disbelievers have no honour with Allah. So when you see the disbelievers overpowering the believers in certain countries, know that it is temporary  - as a test for us and them. Sooner or later it'll go away, and we believe in the promise of Allah.

What should we do in order to get عزة?
In [35:10]:

Whoever desires honour, power, glory, victory, then all the عزة belongs to Allah. All the عزة is in Allah's hand. So seek it from him.

You want عزة. You seek it from Allah. By doing what?
الكلم الطيب - Good Utterances; Glorifying Allah, Teaching People, استغفار, etc. -> With your tongue.
العمل الصالح - Good Deeds -> With your heart and limbs.

In other words: Adhere and abide to the obedience of Allah, and His Shari'ah, and you'll be honoured.

-> Whoever seeks  العزة from other than Allah has gone astray
-> Whoever seeks العزة through disobedience to Allah has gone astray
-> Whoever seeks العزة by allying with the disbelievers has gone astray.
-> Whoever shows hostility to the believers and fights them has gone astray.

This person will never be honoured or get through by these matters; rather العزة is only achieved through obedience to Allah. Allah linked العزة with His obedience.

So the more you obey Allah and abide by His law in a certain matter, the more Allah will support you in it.
The more you disobey Allah, the more you'll be disgraced by Him. How can you expect to be supported in your affair when you are disobeying Allah and committing sins with your heart, tongue, limbs? You have envy in your heart and you think Allah will honour you? You disobey Allah to please the disbelievers and you expect to be honoured?

And Allah linked العزة with faith. The more you believe in Allah, the Angels, the books, the messengers, the last day, the Qadar, the more Allah will honour and support you.

We wonder why the Shaytan overpowers us and Allah doesn't support us against him. It's because the Shaytan doesn't overpower except the person who is weak and has sicknesses in his heart. Make استغفار and Allah will support you against everyone. Obey Allah and a He'll honour you.
So whenever a person misses out on his share of glory and honour, this is due to his lack of belief in Allah. But whenever he's supported, it's because of his faith. Watch your tongue, limbs, and heart. Obey Allah as much as you can, and Allah will support you against your enemies.

If a person seeks honour by doing evil deeds; plotting, deceiving people, etc; instead of giving him honour, Allah will disgrace him, because he's committing a sin.

Therefore, the obedient person to Allah is عزيز, even if he is poor, and has no support. And as he is perfect in this attribute, as he is higher in status with Allah. Therefore the most honoured among the people are the Prophets and Messengers. - Ibn AlQayyim in الداء و الدواء

Look at the Prophets and Messengers. Their fame is continuous even after their death; especially the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ. And look at how Allah elevated his companions fame. And this is all because of their faith.

In the Dua Qunoot, we say "... إنه لا يذل من واليت، ولا يعزّ من عاديت...."

And whom will Allah take as a Wali? In [10:62-63]:

Allah will honour the person in that specific matter he feared Allah regarding.
E.g. Offering Salat AlFajr

عن جندب بن سفيان رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:  "من صلى الصبح فهو في ذمة الله فانظر يابن آدم، لا يطلبنك الله من ذمته بشيء"

Jundub bin Sufyan reported that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who offers the dawn (Fajr) prayers will come under the Protection of Allah. O son of Adam! Beware, lest Allah should call you to account in any respect from (for withdrawing) His Protection."
[Muslim].

Why specifically the Fajr prayer?
Al-Teebi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The reason why Fajr prayer is singled out for mention here is because of the hardship that it entails, and performing it is a sign of a man’s sincerity and faith, and whoever is a sincere believer is under the protection of Allaah. [Sharh Mishkaat al-Masaabeeh by al-Teebi (2/184).]

This is especially true for men, because that have to get out of their beds, and leave to the Masjid. That's why the reward is so great.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen (1/591): "This indicates that it is obligatory to respect the Muslims who affirm their Islam by praying Fajr, because no one offers Fajr prayer but a believer. And it is not permissible for anyone to transgress against them."

One is honoured according to his obedience to Allah. If you find yourself humiliated, check yourself; perhaps you disobeyed Allah in that matter. Your honour has a direct relation to your obedience to Allah.

Also, the Prophet ﷺ said,  "Humiliation and disgrace are for those who disobey my command" [Ahmed, Authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih AlJaami]

And He ﷺ said to the Ansar, "O Ansar, were you not humiliated, and Allah honoured you?"
They replied, "Allah and His Messenger ﷺ spoke the truth"

We are honoured by Islam. And yet when we travel to non-Muslim countries we try to imitate them. We don't want to be distinguished from them - although we're on the right path and they're not. Islam is the truth, and we should feel honoured to be on it. Your abaya is an honour for you. Don't feel humiliated when you wear it.

Tariq ibn Shihab reported that Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, left on a journey to Syria and with him was Abu Ubaida. They came upon a creek, so Umar dismounted from his camel, took off his sandals and placed them over his shoulder, and then led the camel over the creek. Abu Ubaida said, “O commander of the faithful, are you doing this? You have taken off your sandals and placed them on your back and you led the camel through the creek yourself. I do not think it will be easy for me to get the people of this country to honor you.” Umar said, “If only someone else had said this, O Abu Ubaida! I have made this a deterrent for the nation of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Verily, we were a disgraceful people and Allah honoured us with Islam. If we seek honour from other than Islam,  Allah will humiliate us"

The intelligent person among the people is the one who knows the means of attaining honour and seeks it, and knows the means of causing humiliation and avoids it. This is the state of the believer in this Dunya.
