(3/5/16) - The Sickness and The Cure - الدَّاء و الدّواء - Class 4 -Part A

بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The book is divided into:
a) The Qur'an
b) The دعاء
c) The Effects of Sins
d) The Sicknesses

And Ibn AlQayyim focused on the most serious sicknesses, which are the sicknesses of the heart. Because if the heart is healthy, the mental and physical sicknesses won't be a problem.

What are the medicines for all sickness - be they physical, mental, or diseases of the heart?
1) The Qur'an; and specifically سورة الفاتحة
2) دعاء
In order for the دعاء to be effective, you need to be persistent in making it.
And hastiness prevents the دعاء from being effective

What does the دعاء require?

The presence of your heart while making دعاء

1) Gather with your Dua the presence of your heart. Focus completely on what you're seeking.

Allah doesn't want your tongue, He wants your heart. And we call the co-op the جمعية, because we get everything from A-Z in that place. Similarly, everything should be gathered in our heart. All our feelings should be gathered in the دعاء. We need to beg Allah with all our heart.

2) Choose the best time for the Dua to be accepted
Dua is an عبادة. We equate the Dua being answered as getting what we seek immediately. But it isn't limited to that; Allah accepting your Dua also means that Allah will accept it as an act of worship. Allah knows the best time to give you what you're seeking. This requires a lot of submission.

What are these times?

1) الثلث الأخير من الليل - The Last Third of the Night

2) عند الأذان - During the Athan

3) بين الأذان و الإقامة - Between the Athan and the Iqama

4) أدبار الصلوات المكتوبات - During the prayer; after the Tashahud and before the Salaam

5) عند صعود الإمام يوم الجمعة على المنبر حتى تقضى الصلاة - When the Imam stands on the minbar during Salaat AlJum'ah until the prayer ends.
And inshallah, this applies even if you're at home. Allah is الواسع.

6) آخر ساعة بعد العصر من ذالك اليوم - The last hour after Asr on Friday

It's perfectly fine to make Dua at any other time. Allah says in [27:62]:

And in [2:186]:

But these are the best times.

What else does دعاء require?

Humility in your heart, brokenness between the hands of your Lord, humiliation, humility, and softness.

Don't make Dua as if you're rich and asking a rich; you're عزيز and asking العزيز. Ask as a slave to His Master, فقير to الغني, someone who is imperfect to the One who is perfect.
And this is the path many people rarely traverse. We make our children feel confident, strong, self-sufficient, with so much ego. We need to feel broken before Allah.
دعاء is an عبادة, and there should be انكسار.

Face the Qibla
This isn't obligatory, but it's the best thing to do while making Dua.

To be in a state of purity
Again, this isn't obligatory.
Wudhoo washes away our sins, so it makes us feel clean and pure.

Raise your hands to Allah
Allah is above the seven heavens.
If you want to ask someone in a top position, we have to make an effort and climb to them. There's no one higher than Allah, and yet, wherever you are on earth, all you have to do is raise your hands and ask Him. There's no struggle.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Allah is shy, if a slave raises his hands to ask Him, to return it empty.

To start praising Allah, thanking Him.
You can ask immediately, but it's out of good manners to begin praising Allah.

E.g.

Then to send Salat upon the Prophet ﷺ
Whoever sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, Allah will take care of his worries and solve all his problems.

Then, before you ask your need, precede it with repentance and استغفار

And doing the above three could solve all your problems. The problem could be due to your sins. These are actually sufficient; praising Allah is even better than what you're seeking. Allah gives those who remember Allah more than those who ask.

E.g.

Then go to Allah, and insist on your Dua, and call your Lord with hope and fear.
This requires so much heart. You fear rejection of the Dua because of the evil in yourself, and you hope from Allah.

Within your Dua, seek Allah's help through His names and attributes and Tawheed.

Give charity, for this kind of Dua will never ever be rejected, especially if the Dua you used is the wordings of the Prophet ﷺ.
