Tadabbur Class 6b (21/4/16) - Wishes 1

بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Verses 75-78:

The hypocrites took a strong oath, that if Allah gave them of His bounty, they would spend it in charity, and surely be of the righteous.
Allah fulfilled their wish.
But they broke their promise; showed stinginess, and turned away from righteousness.

As an immediate consequence for their action, Allah placed hypocrisy in their hearts. Not temporarily; but until the day they meet Allah. They'll die upon that state because they broke their promise with Allah, and because they lied.

Allah watches our hearts, wishes, our promises - and we are accountable for them. Wishes are something natural in human beings, Allah gave it to us in order to encourage us to do good. And wishes continue even after a person dies; when he's in his grave, and on the Day of Judgement.

Also, the Shaytan can overpower man with regards to his wishes, in two ways:
1) By arousing false hopes and wishes in you
2) Using the wish you already have to make you disobey Allah

E.g. The wish of Yusuf's brothers
In [12:9]:

They planned to kill Yusuf or Cast him in another land
What was their wish? For their fathers attention to be directed to them only.

The Shaytan knew this wish and whispered these ideas in their heads. This is how the Shaytan plays with most people - through their wishes.

And just as Yusuf's brothers said, "و تكونوا من بعده قوما صالحين", the hypocrites said, "و لنكوننّ من الصّالحين". Because the Shaytan plays the same plot again and again with the sins of Adam. He did it with Adam, with Yusuf, with the hypocrites at the time of the Prophet ﷺ, till this day.
He orders you to Do This - kill, steal, do wrong - then after that you can repent and become a righteous person.
But what happened after they threw Yusuf in the well?
-> Their fathers attention wasn't directed to them, in fact it increased towards Yusuf
-> Their lives became even more miserable and full of distress
-> That one sin led them to another sin which led them to another sin and another.
This is exactly what the Shaytan wants from you, to drown you in sins. If you just listen to him the first time, he'll take you with him again and again and again.

E.g. A person who works in finance and is in charge of money at a company. He may go through a personal financial crisis, and the Shaytan will whisper and tell him to take some for his need, and later when he gets money he can put it back. No one will know, and after you do it, you can repent to Allah and become one of the righteous.
If this person responds to the first call of try Shaytan, He'll make him do it again and again, until stealing becomes a habit; something very easy to do. And this is what the Shaytan wants from him.

That's why, As-Sa'di said in his intepretation of [4:17]:

"Conversely, the sinner who continues sinning and committing evil deeds, until those sins have become his permanent habit, it becomes extremely difficult for him to fully repent. Presumably, He is not granted the capability to offer repentance, and the means of repentance are not made easy for him. For example, if a person commits sins even after having definite knowledge and belief that Allah sees and hears everything, he closes upon himself the doors of Allah's mercy. However Allah grants the capability of beneficial repentance which washes away sins and offenses, even to the person who commits sins and persists with those sins, but has faith in Allah. Yet Allah's mercy and pardon is closer to the first person who offers repentance immediately after committing a sin. For this reason Allah ended this verse with, "Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise""

E.g. The Story of Qarun
In [28:79-82]:

What are the indications that they wished for something?
- ياليت
- تمنّوا

Those who wished to be in Qaruns place the day before, came to know that what they wished for was something wrong - when they saw the end of Qarun. They came to know that treasures and riches are nothing; Allah gives it to whom He loves and whom He doesn't love. It isn't an indication of the love and pleasure of Allah on a person.

"لولا أن منّ الله علينا"
This has two meanings:
1) "Hadn't it been for the graciousness of our Lord for not fulfilling our wish"
They're saying الحمد لله Allah didn't fulfill their wish.

2) "Hadn't it been for Allah's graciousness for not taking us to account for our wrong wish we'd be perished"
