بِسْم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Allah said in [96:4-5]:
From these verse we learn that Allah is the One who teaches us. We have to attribute the blessing of knowledge to Him, and be grateful to Him for teaching us.
The purpose behind us reciting Qur'an is to come out of our recitation knowing who Allah is by His names and attributes, establishing Tawheed in our hearts. That's why Allah revealed the Qur'an and created the entire universe around us in the first place - so that we know who He is.
If we don't know our Lord from the Qur'an nor from the universal signs, there is no benefit in this reading/recitation.

The Description of the Hypocrites in سورة التوبة
Verse 74:
They swear they didn't say, but Allah says that they said a word a كفر - and because of this word they
uttered, they became disbelievers after they had believed.
What did they say? They criticized the Prophet ﷺ when was distributing charity, defamed him, said that 'the most honoured' (i.e. Abdullah bin Ubayy) would expel 'the most humiliated' (The Prophet ﷺ). All these statements caused them to go out of the fold of Islam
Even after the Prophet ﷺ was a means of bringing them out of the darkness of disbelief into the light of Islam, and after Allah enriched them after they were poor and in need, they defamed the Prophet ﷺ and plotted to kill him in Tabuk. But Allah sent Jibreel to inform the Prophet ﷺ of their plan, and they couldn't carry it out.
After all this, look at the mercy of Allah:
Allah opens the gate of repentance for them. Although the they said a word of كفر, became disbelievers, wanted to kill the Prophet, ﷺ if they repent, Allah would forgive them.
However, if they turn away:
Allah will punish them. They won't have any happiness in this Dunya, their lives will have no blessing, it'll be full of depression and grief. And they won't have any protector or supporter on earth against Allah to bring them out of this difficulty. And in the hereafter, they'll be punished in Hell.
Lessons:
1)" يحلفون بالله"
One of the characteristics of the hypocrites is that they always swear. We should be careful not to swear, especially falsely.
2) They didn't consider what they said as something major, although Allah considered it كفر.
This teaches us that when the faith of the person becomes weak and full of sicknesses he won't feel the severity of committing major sins.
Anas spoke to the Tabi'een over a thousand years ago saying, "You people do sins which you consider tiny as hair, but during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, we considered them as major destructive sins"
If this was the state of the Salaf after the death of the Prophet ﷺ, then what about our faith in comparison to theirs? We may be committing major sins, falling into hypocrisy and كفر, and we don't even feel it. All this is due to weak faith in the heart.
If a person frequently commits major sins (backbiting, lying, gossiping, etc) he will never feel the greatness or severity of committing minor sins. He'll say that this is nothing, he didn't do anything wrong. His heart will not be able to detect it.
And the Prophet ﷺ said that if minor sins gather on a person it will destroy him on the Day of Judgement.
E.g. Mothers bring their children to the Masjid and they play with the racks where the Mus'hafs are on, throw it on the ground, even trample on it. If you advise her she says what's the big deal, they're just children.
The Salaf would say that it was forbidden to ask a child or an insane person to bring him a Mus'haf, lest it falls from his hand and onto the floor. The Mus'haf falling on the floor was considered a great sin in their sight.
E.g. There are prayer mats with pictures of the Ka'bah, Masjid an-Nabawi, etc. These are symbols of Allah, and you find people sitting on them, throwing the prayer mats around, etc. And they say, "It's just a picture". And Allah says in [22:32]:
Ibn Baz has a Fatwa in which he has it's forbidden to use these prayer mats, due to the dishonor and disrespect people have for them.
And this is all due to weak faith. People look at these violations as if it's nothing. They defame the symbols of Allah, the religion, the Udhiya, etc. posting them on social networks and laughing, not understanding that what they're doing will bring them out of the fold of Islam.
Don't belittle the minor sins. One may start with a minor sin and it'll increase and increase until he is led to commit major sins. Don't say it's something insignificant and that Allah is الغفور. Repeatedly committing minor sins will lead you to easily commit major sins.
Weak faith makes a person commit these sins and feel like it's nothing, and even go on to drop many of the basises of Islams.
There was a person who prayed and made a mistake in her recitation, so she exchanged one of the words from the Qur'an with her own word of a similar meaning. When she was told that what she did was wrong, she said that as long as it has the same meaning it's fine.
Who made this Halal on you? If this matter isn't stopped the Qur'an will be changed, added and deleted to, and accordingly the religion will be changed, just like what happened to the People of the Scriptures.
And the word which Allah chose has great meaning, how on earth can you put a word from yourself? This is something very serious.

Handalah Al-Usayyidi who was one of the scribes of Messenger of Allah ﷺ reported: I met Abu Bakr and he said: "How are you O Handalah?"
I said, "Handalah has become a hypocrite"
He said, "Far removed is Allah from every imperfection, what are you saying?"
I said, "When we are in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he reminds us of HellFire and Jannah, we feel as if we are seeing them with our very eyes, and when we are away from Messenger of Allah ﷺ we attend to our wives, our children, our business, most of these things (pertaining to life hereafter) slip out of our minds."
Abu Bakr said, "By Allah, I also experience the same thing".
So Abu Bakr and I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Handalah has turned into a hypocrite."
Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What has happened to you?"
I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , when we are in your company, and are reminded of Hell-fire and Jannah, we feel as if we are seeing them with our own eyes, but when we go away from you and attend to our wives, children and business, much of these things go out of our minds."
Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if your state of mind remains the same as it is in my presence and you are always busy in remembrance (of Allah), the angels will shake hands with you in your beds and in your roads; but Handalah, time should be devoted (to the worldly affairs) and time should be devoted (to prayer)". He (the Prophet ﷺ) said this thrice.
Many people interpret the word "ساعة و ساعة" from this Hadith to mean that you should devote one part of your time for Allah, and the other part to do whatever you want - be it Halal or Haraam. There are people singing and dancing and doing whatever they want, regardless if it's pleasing to Allah or not, and if you ask them they say "ساعة و ساعة"
They don't understand that the Prophet ﷺ meant that if you were in that state perpetually you'd be like the Angels who always worship Allah. We're not like them, we have to devote our other hours to give other people and ourselves their rights. Our body has a حق on us, our husbands have a حق on us, our family has a حق on us, our children have a حق on us. There's a time for this and a time for that.
---------------
Verses 75-78:
لنصّدّقنّ
لنكوننّ
Look how many affirmations they gave. They gave a strong covenant and promised Allah, that if He enriched them, they'd give alms and be of the righteous.
But what was their attitude when Allah gave them of His bounty?
1) They showed stinginess
2) They turned away from the obedience of Allah in aversion. They didn't want to obey Allah.
Accordingly, How did Allah deal with them?
فاء التعقيب
Immediately, Allah put hypocrisy in their hearts.
Temporarily? Nope. Until the day they meet Allah.
Why?
باء بسببية = Because they
1) Broke their promise with Allah
2) They lied
And this is exactly what the Prophet ﷺ said in the Hadith:
"Whoever has (the following) four characteristics will be a pure hypocrite:
1) If he speaks, he tells a lie;
2) if he gives a promise, he breaks it;
3) if he makes a covenant he proves treacherous;
4) and if he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil, insulting manner (unjust).
And whoever has one of these characteristics, has one characteristic of a hypocrite unless he gives it up.” [Sahih Bukhari]
Side Note: خيانة.
E.g. You are a mother, and have children. Your children are an أمانة. How did you dispose this? Did you raise your children in a way pleasing to Allah or not?
Your students are an أمانة on your neck. How much dedication have you put to teaching them and fulfilling their rights?
You are an employee, your job is an امانة. People who punch out one time and leave another betray this trust. So are those who chat and eat while they should be working, or those who give false sick leaves because they want to travel. You're accountable for all these actions.
So Allah watches the hearts of the people and their secrets. And He tests their truthfulness. You may wish for money so you can give in charity, and money comes to you from a place you never could expect. Go on, help people, give charity. This is the test.
But because the hypocrites turned away from the obedience of Allah; turned away from the good, Allah punished them with continuous hypocrisy. And Allah threatened them in the following verse:
This is a threat. Allah is telling us He knows our secrets and even more hidden then the secrets. There are thoughts which no one knows about, but Allah knows. He is watching your heart, your thoughts, your concerns, your wishes - and He will take account of you for what you're thinking of. This is something very serious.
As-Sa'di said:
"These verses were revealed regarding one of the hypocrites called Tha'labah. He came to the Prophet ﷺ asking him to invoke Allah to grant him of His bounty, in order that he can give in charity, join the relations between his kith and kin, and help the distressed. The Prophet ﷺ invoked for him, and Allah gave him sheep. These sheep reproduced, and he took it outside Madinah, and slowly he started to miss attending the five obligatory prayers. He would only come for the Friday prayer. Then he stopped attending the Friday prayer as well.
When the Prophet ﷺ was told about his state, he sent someone to collect charity from him, but he said, "Zakat is just the sister of tax" and refused to pray. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed about what he said, he said "Woe to Tha'labah"
Allah then revealed these verses, and some of his family told him about it. He immediately took the Zakat and went to the Prophet ﷺ, but the Prophet ﷺ refused to take it from him. He tried to give it to Abu Bakr after the Prophet ﷺ's death, but Abu Bakr refused. He tried to take it to Umar after Abu Bakr, but Umar refused."
When hypocrisy is in the heart of the person, you don't know how that person will die.
How many times have we promised something to Allah, asked and wished for good things, and Allah gave us - and how much have we fulfilled our promise to Allah? To put hypocrisy in a persons heart until the Day of Judgement isn't anything simple or trivial. It's something very serious.
So let the believer beware of this characteristic and present these verses to himself: Have you ever promised your Lord and not fulfilled that promise?
This takes us to the subject of wishes -> ->
