Allah tells us the meaning of the hypocrites actions, and exposes what's in their hearts.
When you hear about the descriptions of the hypocrites, then do the opposite of what they do. They don't remember Allah much, so remember Allah much. They don't like to spend, so spend of your money in charity.
In Verse 71:
What's the wisdom behind ending the verse with عزيز حكيم?
عزيز = To Allah belongs the power, honour, glory, support, victory, help. He is قاهر، غالب - whatever He wills happens, whatever He doesn't will not happen. He is perfect in all aspects. Nothing can harm Allah.
Allah puts everything in its perfect place.
Allah, by His عزة, honours those who does the aforementioned actions. He is the One who grants honour, support, help, to the believers. And when He honours them, no one can repel it from them, no matter how much the hypocrites and disbelievers fight to dishonor them. No one can repel the command of Allah.
He is الحكيم, He gives the honour to those who deserve it. Because the believers did these actions, Allah showed mercy to them and honoured them. Because the hypocrites did what they did, Allah punished them. Allah will never reward the hypocrites nor will He punish the believers. He puts everything in its right place.
In Verse 72:
The punishment for the hypocrites in Verse 68:
وعد الله المؤمنين و المؤمنات X وعد الله المنافقين و المنافقات
جنات تجري من تحتها الأنهار خالدين فيها و مساكن طيبة في جنات عدن X نار جهنم خالدين فيها هي حسبهم
رضوان من الله X لعنهم الله
Greater than all the delights of Paradise, is the pleasure of Allah. In this life, whenever you do any good deed, do it seeking the pleasure of Allah.
Continuation of the Description of the Hypocrites:
Verse 74:
Constantly swearing is an attribute of the hypocrites. They swear that they didn't say.
What did the hypocrites say? They mocked, defamed the Prophet ﷺ, criticized him and the believers regarding charity. They said that 'the most honoured one' (i.e. Abdullah Ibn Ubayy) would expel 'the most humiliated one' (The Prophet ﷺ)
After all this, they say, "We didn't say."
But Allah said that what they said were words of كفر.
And because of that word, they became disbelievers after embracing Islam. This word nullified their Islam.
"و همو بما لم ينالو"
They intended to kill the Prophet ﷺ in Tabuk, but Allah informed the Prophet ﷺ and protected him. They didn't get what they wanted.
Instead of thanking Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and being grateful that Allah brought them out of the darkness of disbelief into the light of Islam, from poverty into riches, they were outraged and angry with the distribution, and wanted to kill the Prophet ﷺ.
And, yet, in spite of all their evil, Allah presents the توبة to them:
If they repent, Allah will forgive them.
And if they turn away (if they persist in committing that sin and remaining in their state of hypocrisy) Allah will punish them with a painful torment (by calamities, distresses befalling them and their children and their wealth) in this world and in the next, and they'll have no supporter or helper on earth.
Lessons:
-> The person whose faith is weak and whose heart is sick and not reformed, considers the major sins as nothing. The hypocrites uttered grievous words, words of كفر, but they said "We swear we didn't say."
We find this happening nowadays, people taking major sins lightly.
Anas spoke to the Tabi'een over a thousand years ago and said, "You people do deeds (commit sins) which seems as tiny as the hair, while we, during the time of the Prophet ﷺ considered them major sins"
This indicates that when the people's faith goes down, they commit major sins, and don't see it as major, rather they look at it as something very little.
We find people transgressing the rights of Allah and them say they didn't do or say anything wrong. They mock the religion through the posts they circulate.
E.g. The Udhiya. They make jokes about it and circulate it. And the Udhiya is one of the symbols of Allah. Allah says in [22:32]:
And people make jokes and send it about the Hijab, the religion, etc.
And when you tell them, they think they didn't say or do anything wrong. They say "ما قالوا"
"و لقد قالوا كلمة الكفر."
By uttering the words a person may come out of the fold of Islam without realizing it.
And if one commits major sins continuously, the minor signs will become nothing to him.
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Beware of minor sins. Verily, they gather upon a man until he is destroyed.” [Musnad Ahmed]
Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Beware of minor sins like a people who descend into the bottom of a valley, so one comes with a stick and another with a stick until they have fire to cook their bread. Verily, when a person is held accountable for these minor sins they will destroy him.” [Musnad Ahmed]
They say it's no problem if I look at this, listen to music, etc.
and Allah says in [2:81]:
