Hypocrisy is one of the dangerous diseases of the heart.
It means to show good and conceal the bad; or it could be major hypocrisy - when a person outwardly shows that he is of the people of Islam with his tongue, but conceals disbelief and his opposition to Islam. This kind of hypocrisy makes a person lose the reward of this life and the next.
Allah said in [4:145]:
"Verily, the hyprocrites will be in the lowest depths (grade) of the Fire; no helper will you find for them."
In [4:140]:
"And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Quran) that when you hear the Verses of Allah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allah will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell"
In [4:138]:
"Give to the hypocrites the tidings that there is for them a painful torment"
In [33:73]:
"So that Allah will punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the men and women who are AlMushrikun (the polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and in His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ ). And Allah will pardon (accept the repentance of) the true believers of the Islamic Monotheism, men and women. And Allah is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful."
In [4:142]:
"Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little."
And in [33:1]:
"O Prophet (Muhammad ﷺ)! Keep your duty to Allah, and obey not the disbelievers and the hypocrites (i.e., do not follow their advices). Verily! Allah is Ever AllKnower, AllWise."
The Causes of Hypocrisy
1) Weak Faith - He doesn't remember the ability of Allah and the poorness of people to Him,
2) Neglecting the performance of good deeds
3) Neglecting performance of prayer in congregation
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"No prayer is heavier upon the hypocrites than the Fajr and Isha prayers. If they knew what was in them (of reward), that would have certainly attended them, even if (it was) crawling" [Bukhari]
4) The Prophet ﷺ told us the signs of minor hypocrisy:
"There are three signs of a hypocrite: when he speaks, he tells lies, when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays his trust" [Agreed upon]
5) The person doesn't feel like Allah is watching his heart, so he takes care of his outside appearance and neglects his inside.
Hypocrisy nullifies deeds and makes them scattered floating particles of dust. Allah doesn't accept the deeds of the hypocrite, the hypocrite
Remedy:
1) The Slave should account himself from time to time and ask himself if what he conceals is in conformity with what he reveals.
2) The slave should glorify Allah and strive to be steadfast on that
3) To supplicate frequently and remember that the hearts are between the two fingers of Allah, and He is able to remove hypocrisy from it.
In [8:24]:
"O you who believe! Answer Allah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life, and know that Allah comes in between a person and his heart (i.e. He prevents an evil person to decide anything). And verily to Him you shall (all) be gathered."
4) To remember that Allah is able to punish you.
In [67:20]:
"Who is he besides the Most Beneficent that can be an army to you to help you? The disbelievers are in nothing but delusion."
And [82:6]:
5) To reflect over the reality of matters and not be deceived with what the disbelievers have of the enjoyment of this world.
In [3:197]:
6) To beware of the doubts that are spread in the media which plant hypocrisy in the hearts.

10) Showing Off
Allah warned us of the bad consequences of showing off in this life and in the hereafter. Showing off means to show others your good deeds, wanting people to see it, and not wanting the reward of the hereafter.
Allah said in [107:4-6]:
"Those who do good deeds only to be seen (of men),"
And in [8:47]:
"And be not like those who come out of their homes boastfully and to be seen of men, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah. and Allah is Muhitun (encircling and thoroughly comprehending) all that they do."
In [4:142]:
"Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little."
In [2:264]:
"O you who believe! Do not render in vain your Sadaqah (charity) by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allah, nor in the Last Day. His likeness is the likeness of a smooth rock on which is a little dust; on it falls heavy rain which leaves it bare. They are not able to do anything with what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people."
The Prophet ﷺ said, "If any one wants to have his deeds widely publicized, Allah will publicize (his humiliation) and if anyone makes a hypocritical display (of his deeds), Allah will make a display of him" [Muslim]
And he ﷺ said, "Shall I not tell you of that which I fear for you more than the Dajjal?"
The companions said, "Yes"
He ﷺ said, "Hidden polytheism, when a man stands to pray and makes it look good because he sees someone looking at him" [Ibn Majah]
In another Hadith:
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, "The first to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who had died as a martyr. He will be brought forward. Allah will remind him of the favours He had bestowed upon him and the man will acknowledge them.
Then He will ask him: 'What did you do to express gratitude for it?'
The man will reply: 'I fought for Your Cause till I was martyred.'
Allah will say: 'You have lied. You fought so that people might call you courageous; and they have done so.'
Command will then be issued about him and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. Next a man who had acquired and imparted knowledge and read the Qur'an will be brought forward, Allah will remind him of the favours He had bestowed upon him and the man will acknowledge them.
Then He will ask him: 'What did you do to express gratitude for it?'
The man will reply: 'I acquired knowledge and taught it, and read the Qur'an for Your sake.'
Allah will say to him: 'You have lied. You acquired knowledge so that people might call you a learned (man), and you read the Qur'an so that they might call you a reciter, and they have done so.'
Command will then be issued about him, and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. Next a man whom Allah had made affluent and to whom Allah had given plenty of wealth, will be brought forward, Allah will remind him of the favours He had bestowed upon him and the man will acknowledge them.
He will ask him: 'What did you do to express gratitude for it?'
The man will reply: 'I did not neglect any of the ways You liked wealth to be spent liberally for Your sake'.
Allah will say to him: 'You have lied. You did it so that people might call you generous, and they have done so.'
Command will then be issued about him and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell."– Riyadh As Saliheen, Muslim, Book 18, Hadith 1617
So the believer should purifiy his intention in all his deeds or he will not be rewarded for them.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Actions are to be judged only by intentions, and a man will have only what he intended" [Agreed upon]
And in Bukhari, "You will be rewarded for whatever you spend for Allah's sake, even if it were a morsel of food which you put in your wife's mouth" [Bukhari]
Allah said: I am so self-sufficient that I'm in no need of having an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else's sake as well as mine will have that action renounced by Me to him whom he associated with a Me [Muslim]
The evidence of this are the verses in the Qur'an which warn a person from intending the worldly life b his good deed. Allah says in [11:15-16]:
"Whosoever desires the life of the world and its glitter; to them We shall pay in full (the wages of) their deeds therein, and they will have no diminution therein."
"They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but Fire; and vain are the deeds they did therein. And of no effect is that which they used to do."
When the slave knows that Allah is the Only one who can benefit and remove harm from him, he'll not intend his worship considering the people - rather, he'd intend the pleasure of his Lord.
So showing off:
1) Nullifies the deed and removes the reward
2) is a reason for the aversion of Allah on a slave, and one of the Major Sins
3) is a cause of being scandalized on the Last Day. (It will be said, "Those are the people who show off", so they'll be humiliated)
4) reminds man of what he's done, thus it becomes a source of pride, arrogance, harming others, admiring oneself, and hypocrisy.
Reasons for Showing Off
1) Loving to hear compliments from people.
We say to him: The compliments of Allah upon you is better than the compliments of the people, and Allah is the Only one who can make the people praise or dispraise you.
2) Wanting money from people
We say to him: The money you receive from this deed is forbidden, unlawful, evil money, and you won't have any real benefit from it,
3) Loving high ranks
We say to him: When the slave knows the ability of Allah and His greatness, that He is the disposer of all affairs, then how can he show off, knowing that Allah watches him.
Remedy:
1) Remembering the great delights in the hereafter, which Allah prepared for the People of Paradise. This motivates the person to do good deeds intending the reward of the hereafter
2) To strive against yourself all the time, remember the standing in front of your Lord, remember that Allah is the One who bestowed everything upon you,
3) Hold firmly to Allah from the Shaytan who comes with different ways to commit this sin.
4) To beware of intending any worldly benefit from your good deeds.
E.g. When you invoke Allah, do so intending to please Allah and worship Him, not just for the worldly matter you ask Him for.
5) Check your intention from time to time
6) Reflect over the ugliness and enormity of showing off. The slave doesn't consider the Creator, but the creation.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever seeks Allah's pleasure by the people's wrath, Allah will suffice him from the people. And whoever seeks the people's pleasure by Allah's wrath, Allah will entrust him to the people" [At-Tirmithi]
7) To train yourself to hide your worship, and be satisfied with the knowledge of Allah.
