Dreams - Part 1 - (3/4/16)

Many people take the issue of dreams too seriously, and base their way of life on it, or falsely believe that their dreams always come true and they have a special status with Allah (as the Sufis do).

How should we view and deal with dreams according to the Qur'an and Sunnah?

- There are True dreams and Untrue dreams.

-  The Prophet said, "True dreams are one of forty six parts of Prophethood" [Agreed upon]

This is because true dreams come true. It doesn't mean that the person is a Prophet, but merely that the dream informs him of something that'll take place in the future. We wont know if our dreams are true dreams until they actually happen - and true dreams are rare to have.

- The truthfulness of the dream depends on the truthfulness of the dreamer. [Muslim, 4200]

- Towards the end of time, dreams will hardly be untrue, because of the فتن that surround us. Allah will compensate the believers in the form of true dreams at the end of time.

- Dreams are of three kinds:
1) Good dreams (which are from Allah)

2) Bad dreams (which are from the Shaytan)

It was narrated from Jabir that a Bedouin came to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and said: I dreamt that my head was cut off and I was chasing it. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not speak of how Shaitan toyed with you in your sleep.” (Hadith No. 5925, Book of Dreams, Sahih Muslim, Vol. 6).

3) Dreams which come from the person. He sees at night what he thinks of and faces during the day.

- All the dreams of the Prophets are Wahy (revelation from Allah). But our dreams are not - they're mixed.

- Our dreams should be examined in the light of the Qur'an and Sunnah. We should ask ourselves which of the three types our dreams are.

- The Scholars said if you want your dreams to be true you have to follow the manners:
1) Strive to speak honestly all the time
2) Eat lawful food
3) Adhere to the commandments of the Shari'ah, and avoid what Allah has forbidden.
4) Sleep in a state of complete purity, facing the Qibla, remembering Allah till you sleep, etc.

- The most truthful dreams are seen right before dawn, when Allah descends to the nearest heaven and His mercy is near, unlike after Maghrib, when the devils disperse.
