The Qur'an is a شفاء, and specifically سورة الفاتحة. And we read it the most during the day, when we pray. We don't know what sicknesses we have, so it's important that we always read the Quran.
دعاء is a دواء, while the Qur'an is a شفاء.
One of the most beneficial remedies is دعاء. If someone is sick, people run to the doctors and to the medicine. They only resort to دعاء at the end, when doctors say there is no hope. Although, دعاء is one of the most powerful and effective medicines. But we underestimate it.
When we have the medicine in our hands, we don't make دعاء. We only make دعاء from our hearts when the medicine fails. A lady had fever for a month, and kept taking panadol, but of no avail. In the end all she focused on was Qur'an and سورة الفاتحة and she was completely cured.
Dua is the most effective remedy, and is an enemy to the sickness, suppressing it and curing it, preventing it from coming, lifting it, or lessening the sickness if it descends; and is a weapon for the believer.
Sometimes medicine causes our sickness to become worse. But دعاء will either lift it or lessen its impact.
And it is with the affliction of three levels:
1) The دعاء is stronger than the affliction, so it prevents it.
2) Your دعاء is weaker than the affliction, so the affliction overpowers it and touches the slave, but will be lighter than it originally would have been.
E.g. You have a fever and made دعاء, but your دعاء wasn't powerful, so it originally would have been 40 degrees, but it was 39.
These all even apply to the sicknesses of the heart - of pride, envy, jealousy, etc.
3) The دعاء and the affliction are equal, so they'll fight with each other, until one overpowers the other.
الدعاء = البلاء
This reminds us of the People of A'raaf; the people who have equal good and bad deeds on the Day of Judgement. Don't ever underestimate any good deeds you do, because it could be that one which is a means of saving you from the HellFire, or from being of these people. Don't underestimate your deeds, and don't underestimate your دعاء. Make more and more and more.
And that's why Allah always tells us to hasten to do and be foremost in good. In [57:21]:
Sometimes we wonder why we're making دعاء and it's not being answered. It's being answered, but one of the three above levels are happening, and we don't realize it.
Allah loves if you persist in دعاء, whereas humans hate it if you do. Because there's no one like Allah. No one is more patient than Allah. Because Allah loves hearing your voice, He loves your devotion. Sometimes we are afflicted because Allah wants to elevate us with Him. Allah is الواسع. And you are the one who'll benefit from this. If you run to someone else, you may be humiliated. And Allah wants to honour you. He wants you to go to the One who can help you.
That's why, in the Hadith of Ibn Abbas:
"إذا سألت فاسأل الله"
(If you ask, then ask Allah)
So insisting and persisting on the same دعاء over and over again is one of the most effective remedies.
That's why you notice in many of the دعاء's we are commanded to say, we repeat it 3 times.
E.g.
It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever asks for Paradise, three times, Paradise will say: “O Allah, admit him to Paradise.” And whoever asked to be saved from Hell, three times, Hell will say: “O Allah, save him from Hell.” [Ibn Majah]
Of the Obstacles which prevent the Acceptance of the دعاء
Not all دعاء's will be accepted. There are some diseases which prevent your دعاء from being accepted; as if it's merely words you say, or an expired medicine.
Our Hastiness.
And this is part of our nature. Allah said in [17:11]:
From the diseases which prevent the دعاء from being answered is the slave being hasty, losing hope, then leaving making دعاء. This is like the example of a person who planted a seed or a plant, and took care of it, but when it doesn't grow, he neglects it.
We need to have manners with Allah. He loves insistence, but not hastiness - because it shows lack of belief in Allah.
If you make دعاء, don't ever be hasty, because it'll make you lose hope.
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "(The dua) of any one of you will be answered so long as he is not hasty in seeking a response and does not say, ‘I prayed but I have not had a response.’" [Bukhari]
