We believe that sicknesses are unlimited and the cure is limited, but it's in fact the other way around. And this reminds us of Allah's name
Every single sickness has a cure. The Prophet ﷺ said: "ما أنزل الله داء إلا أنزل له شفاء" (Allah hasn't sent down a sickness, except He has also sent down the cure)
And the greatest, most effective medicine is the Qur'an.
The entire Qur'an is a cure
Even if you read the Qur'an gradually, over a period of time, it'll slowly cure you from your sicknesses without you even realizing it; be it a mental, physical, or sickness of the heart. But it requires you to believe in it.
It's a cure for the heart from the sicknesses of ignorance and doubts
Why did he talk about the cure for the heart? Most people focus on the sicknesses of the body and mind, but if your heart is cured, you'll be mentally and physically cured. You'll have the correct thinking, and all your limbs will be in harmony. But our problem is lack of belief.
And one of the biggest sicknesses is ignorance. The Qur'an teaches you and clarifies all your doubts.
Allah didn't send down from the sky a cure, more general, more beneficial, more greater, more effective in curing sicknesses than the Qur'an.
The Qur'an is a شفاء, not a دواء.
A single verse can purify your heart so much.
A person was bitten by a poisonous scorpion. This is a physical sickness where the person can die. When you're poisoned, you need to get the poison out - it won't be at peace with your body.
But even this sickness has been cured by the Qur'an.
It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent us, thirty horsemen, on a military campaign. We camped near some people and asked them for hospitality but they refused. Then their leader was stung by a scorpion and they said: 'Is there anyone among you who can recite Ruqyah for a scorpion sting?' I said: 'Yes, I can, but I will not recite Ruqyah for him until you give us some sheep.' They said: 'We will give you thirty sheep.' So we accepted them, and I recited Al-Hamd (i.e. Al-Fatihah) over him seven times. Then he recovered, and I took the sheep. Then some doubts occurred within ourselves. Then we said: 'Let us not hasten (to make a decision concerning the sheep) until we come to the Prophet (ﷺ)' So when we came back: 'I told him what I had done. He said: 'How did you know that it is a Ruqyah? Divide them up and give me a share as well.'"
From this we learn that the effect can occur because of the faith of the reader. It was read upon a disbeliever, but he was immediately cured.
And we also learn that سورة الفاتحة is a Surah to be read for cure.
Also, it's nice to note that Ibn AlQayyim didn't begin this book with sicknesses, but the cure. There's so much wisdom in that. It doesn't depress you. If you open any other medical book, you'll feel like there are germs and sicknesses everywhere, and feel upset. He started with the cure, the best cure being the Qur'an, and the best cure from the Qur'an being سورة الفاتحة.
This is what we want. Sometimes, when you depend on a medicine, it may cure that specific sickness or cause some other imbalance or issue in your body. But the Qur'an is a شفاء, where there are no side effects. It'll cure your sickness as if it was never there. It extracts your sickness without affecting anything else.
Panadol just suppresses the pain; the problem still exists. And pain and symptoms are a blessing, because through it you know that you're sick.
And the Qur'an is such an easy medicine. You don't need to even spend money, you can just read it on yourself.
Medicines are expensive, bitter, the tablets are too big, uncomfortable. With the Qur'an, you don't need to do operations, book appointments, etc. You don't even need to carry it anywhere.
But it requires إحسان and sincerity and focus. And when you do that, you'll see amazing things.
Ibn AlQayyim tells us about his experience. He was in Makkah and had been afflicted with many different sicknesses. He didn't find a doctor or medicine.
When the medicine is available, you run to it. But when you have nothing, you have to treat yourself. And he just treated himself with سورة الفاتحة, and found it to be an amazing cure. And he would read it on everyone who had a sickness after that, and they would quickly get cured. But it requires so much trust and faith in Allah.
The stronger your faith is when reciting, the more effective the cure.
