Tadabbur Class 2b - (24/3/16) - Revision of the Characteristics of the Hypocrites

Recap of the Characteristics of the Hypocrites from سورة التوبة

In (9:38):

1) They are Lazy
They prefer the worldly comfort over what Allah commanded them with and lag behind.
Nowadays we don't have Jihad, but we have other commands of Allah. We have the command to acquire the knowledge, be dutiful to our parents, obey our husbands, give Da'wah, etc.
We should be careful not to show laziness with these commands, lag behind, and give excuses.

What should I do? "انفروا
March forth, move quickly, act upon the command of Allah.

2) They prefer the Dunya over the next life. All their efforts and concerns are directed to the Dunya.

Verses 42-45:

3) They're selfish. They deal with people according to their desire. If there is a personal benefit for them, they participate. If there isn't, they don't go.

And because they didn't want to go:

4) They falsely swear and give excuses.
5) They lie

6) They don't believe in Allah, nor in the Day of Judgement

7) They have doubts regarding the religion. They doubt about Allah - will He support the religion or not, if the Prophet ﷺ will be victorious, or will Islam be exterminated, etc.

Verse 46:

8) They have evil intentions. If they had a good intention, and were truthful, they would prepare for the good deed.

E.g. Someone says lets go and do such and such. If you are truthful you would prepare yourself for that day and time. The person who is not truthful may delay preparation, until when the time comes he says sorry I can't go, etc.
Why didn't you prepare in advance?

The truthful person prepares and takes care of everything before the event. The liar will not prepare and then give excuses at the last moment.

-> Because they were not truthful - Allah disliked their participation and going out. Therefore Allah "ثبطهم"
التثبيط is one of Allah's actions. Allah made them stay behind because Allah knew that they weren't truthful, so he made it difficult for them to participate.
They were deprived of participating in the good deed because of their ill intention and the sicknessess that were in their hearts. It's as if Allah's telling them to stay behind, we don't want you.

That's why the scholars said, "When Allah opens a gate of goodness for you, don't be lazy or give excuses, take advantage of it immediately"

-> Deprivation of good is something most people don't feel of.
E.g. Allah may open the gate of giving charity for you, and you should reluctance. After some time, you may go intending to pay, and you are told that they've stopped taking charity. Allah didn't want your charity; you're deprived of the reward.

E.g. A person is called to attend classes. She doesn't show interest to go. Later on, when she wants to go, she'll be told that there's no more spaces. If she has an alive heart, she'll feel regret and remorse
and know that she's been deprived from the good deed. It isn't something to feel happy about.

-> All the gates of goodness are a رزق (provision) from Allah and require احتساب. You should have a good intention and hope the reward from Allah.

-> When you march forth, it's a gift from Allah. Allah is the One who made it easy for you. And التثبيط is a deprivation.

How does Allah "ثبطهم"? He makes their resolution low, they're disheartened, and lose interest after previously being enthusiastic. This happens when people don't appreciate the blessings of Allah.

E.g. The People of Saba. When they didn't appreciate the blessings of Allah, Allah took it away from them.

There was a teacher who said many many years ago that she's bored of teaching. Until now, she tries to come teach but something always pops up which prevents her from coming.

Verse 47:

Allah mentions why He made it difficult for them to come:

9) If they join the believers they would make disorder amongst them,  rise فتتة, and cause dissension. Allah saved the believers from them.

Sometimes you may call someone several times to attend a class and they don't come. Don't insist. You don't know what's in her heart. If she joins you, she might be a reason of causing قتنة.

Verse 48:

10) They uglify the truth and adorn falsehood. They make the truth evil in the eyes of the people, and falsehood something good.

E.g. People use the label "Wahhabi" and warn people of attending centers where people gather to study the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. Muhammed Ibn AbdulWahhab revived Tawheed in the Arabian Peninsula. This is something good. But people invent these labels to uglify the truth, to cause people to feel aversion towards studying the Sunnah, claiming it's extremism.

What is mentioned in سورة التوبة isn't something limited to the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Hypocrisy is  more prevalant nowadays.

Verse 49:

11) They outwardly give themselves a good image to avoid participating. They don't want to do the good deed, and avoid doing so under the false banner of not wanting to fall into فتنة, as if she's a pious, good person.

Verses 50-52:

12) They don't love good for the believers and rejoice if a calamity afflicts the believers.
We have to be careful of falling into this.

E.g. You have a conflict between someone else and hear that she met an accident. The moment you feel like she deserves it, you've fallen into this characteristic of hypocrisy.

The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you will believe until he loves for others what you love for yourself"

13) They wait for calamities to happen to the believers.

Verses 53-54:

Again Allah mentions that they don't believe in Allah and the Judgement day.

14) They get up to pray with laziness.
Laziness is one of the characteristics of the hypocrites. They always prefer comfort and rest over what Allah loves.

15) They don't like to spend. Spending in charity is very heavy on their hearts.

If you find any of these descriptions in you, you first have to confess to them, and then try to overcome it by doing the opposite, in order that Allah reforms you from that characteristic.

Verse 55:

The hypocrites allowed their wealth and children to divert them from the remembrance, accordingly Allah made it a means of hardship and affliction for them. There won't be any بركة in their wealth and children.
