(9/3/16) - Journey to Allah Day 4 - رحلة إلى الله - The Major Intercession, The Reckoning, The Scale - الشفاعة الكبرى، الحساب، الميزان
The Major Intercession
People would then experience a degree of anxiety and agony which they will not be able to stand. Some people would say to others, "Do you see in which trouble you are? Don't you see what has overtaken you? Why don't you find one who should intercede for you with your Lord?"
So some would say to others, "Go to Adam عليه السلام"
And they would go to Adam and say, "O Adam, You are the father of all the people, and Allah created you with His two own hands, and ordered the Angels to prostrate to you, and taught you the names of all things; so please intercede for us with your Lord. Don't you see what trouble we are in?"
Adam will say, "My Lord is angry, to an extent to which He has never been angry before, and never will be in the future. He forbade me from eating from the tree and I disobeyed him. Myself, Myself (I'm only concerned about myself). Go to someone else - Go to Nuh"
They would go to Nuh عليه السلام and say, "O Nuh, you are the first a Messenger sent on earth, and Allah called you a grateful servant. Intercede for us with your Lord, don't you see what we're in?"
Nuh will say, "My Lord is angry today as He has never been before and never will be after. And a curse emanated from me when I cursed my people. Myself, Myself (I'm only concerned about myself). Go to Ibrahim عليه السلام."
They would go to Ibrahim عليه السلام and say, "You are the Prophet of Allah and his Khaleel, so intercede for us with your Lord. Don't you see what we are in?"
Ibrahim will say, "My Lord is angry today as He has never been before and never will be after." He would them mention the three lies he told in life (When he said he was sick, blamed the biggest idol for destroying the others, and when he said Sara was his sister) and then say, "Myself, Myself. (I'm only concerned about myself). Go to someone else - Go to Musa عليه السلام"
They would come to Musa عليه السلام and say, "O Musa, you are Allah's Messenger. Allah favoured you with Messengership and His speaking to you. Intercede for us with your Lord. Don't you see what we are in?"
Musa will say, "My Lord is angry as He has never been before and never will be after. I killed a person whom I had not been ordered to kill. Myself, Myself (I'm only concerned about myself). Go to Eesa عليه السلام."
They would go to Eesa عليه السلام and say, "O Eesa, you are the Messenger of Allah, and you spoke to people while in the cradle, and are the word which Allah sent down upon Maryam, and the spirit from Him, so intercede for us with your Lord. Don't you see the trouble we're in?
Eesa will say, "My Lord is angry today as He has never been before and never will be after. Myself. Myself. (I am only concerned about myself). Go to someone else - Go to Muhammed ﷺ"
They would come to me (Muhammed ﷺ) and say, "O Muhammed ﷺ. You are the Messenger of Allah and the last of all Prophets - and Allah has forgiven you all your past and later sins. Intercede for us with your Lord, don't you see what we're in?"
Then I will set off and come below the Throne and fall prostrate before my Lord; then Allah would reveal to me and inspire me with some of His Praises and Glorifications which He had not revealed to anyone before me.
There are no limits to the names of Allah. And He is الفتاح - He opened new names to the Prophet ﷺ which he never knew before. This also shows us - we need to call upon Allah by His names to relieve an affliction.
This is an honour Allah only gave to the Prophet ﷺ. That's why one of the conditions of a good deed being accepted is following the Messenger ﷺ, that's why one of the questions in the grave is من نبيك? Allah said about the Prophet ﷺ in (9:128):
Allah would then say: "Muhammad, raise your head; ask and it would be granted; intercede and your intercession will be accepted."
I would then raise my head and say: "O my Lord, my Ummah, my Ummah."
I would then raise my head and say: "O my Lord, my Ummah, my Ummah."
All the other Messengers say "Myself, Myself' and our Prophet ﷺ says, 'My Ummah, My Ummah" This should evoke love in your heart for our Prophet ﷺ.
So Allah will give him a special privilege for his Ummah - even before the judgement begins:
It would be said: O Muhammad, bring in by the right gate of Paradise those of your people who would have no account to render. They would share with the people some other door besides this door.
The Prophet then said: "By Him in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, verily the distance between two door leaves of the Paradise is as great as between Mecca and Hajar, or as between Mecca and Busra."
These are the 70,000 people who will enter Paradise without reckoning. In the Hadith:
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "Seventy thousand people of my followers will enter Paradise without accounts, and they are those who do ask for Ar-Ruqya and do not see an evil omen in things (i.e. Superstitions) and put their trust in their Lord.
In another Hadith: "..They don't cauterize.."
Don't ask someone else to read Ruqya on you - do it yourself.
These people refused the strong means of cure, because they don't want to attach themselves to the means. And the people who put their trust in Allah live the most stress free lives. They live as slaves to Allah - wherever Allah puts them, they're happy. They think good and expect good from Allah.
Ibrahim عليه السلام was thrown into the fire, He said حسبنا الله و نعم الوكيل. He didn't even want Jibreel to help him. And Allah made the fire cool and safe for him.
When the people were going from Prophet to Prophet seeking intercession, the Prophets said, "Allah is angry today as He has never been, and will never be after"
The anger of Allah is a restricted attribute of Allah. He isn't always angry - It's restricted to certain times, actions, behaviors. For example, in (1:7):
The Jews are those who earned Allah's anger. They knew the knowledge but they didn't act upon it - and this is one of the causes of Allah's anger upon a person.
When a human being is angry, it is dispraised. But Allah's anger is perfect and praiseworthy.
Although there is anger, you need to believe that Allah's mercy precedes his anger. We need to constantly remind ourselves of Allah's names
Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has one hundred parts of mercy, of which He sent down one between the jinn, mankind, the animals and the insects, by means of which they are compassionate and merciful to one another, and by means of which wild animals are kind to their offspring. And Allah has kept back ninety-nine parts of mercy with which to be merciful to His slaves of the Day of Resurrection.” (Muslim, al-Tawbah, 6908)
Abu Hurairah reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in the Book, which is with Him over His Throne: 'Verily, My Mercy prevailed over My Wrath"
--------------
We think we live on earth for a long time. But no one will come on the Day of Judgement claiming they lived for 60, 50 years. No one will even claim that they lived for one year, or even one month. The Grave and the Day of Judgement are so long, it'll make you belittle the amount of time you spent in this Dunya.
In (20:103-104):
In (30:55):
In (23:112-113):
-------------
- The Reckoning -
Allah will accept the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ for all of humanity and the accounting will begin. How will it begin?
Allah, العظيم، الملك، الخالق، رب الاعالمين, will descend in a manner which suits His majesty. Even when Allah comes down, nothing will be above Him. This doesn't negate His highness.
And when He comes down - 8 of the Angels will carry His throne. In (69:13-18):
Allah doesn't need the Throne, nor the Angels. He is الغني. It's the throne that has the honour of being the throne of Allah, the Angels that have the honour of carrying the throne of Allah. Allah is الحي القيوم. He gave them that privilege.
In (39:67-70):
Allah coming down will make the whole earth be lit with the light of its Rabb. Allah is النور. In (24:35):
On the Day of Judgement, the only light that will be there is the light of Allah. Nowadays there are so many lights and so many kingdoms, it's easy to get deceived by them. There's the light of the sun, of the moon, etc. But on the Day of Judgement everyone will realize that there is only the light of Allah and He is the source of all light.
The intangible light in this life is the light of faith in the believers heart. And this is what this parable refers to.
How will the people be at this time? In (18:48):
Everyone will displayed, standing in a line.
If you meet a principal, ruler, or king in this world, you'll feel nervous. This is a negative feeling. Imagine meeting the King of Kings, meeting your creator! There's nothing like Allah - so there's nothing like the meeting of Allah.
In (17:52):
Allah calls us in this life, but only the believers respond to Him. On the Day of Judgement, everyone - including the disbelievers - will respond, praising Him. No will object or disobey Allah, they'll respond willingly, saying الحمد لله. No one will go to Hell or Paradise until they realize that Allah is praiseworthy. That's why at the end of Surah Zumar (39:75):
Allah calls us in this life. When you hear the Athan - حي على الصلاة - Allah is calling you, so respond.
The disbeliever asks why there's so many laws and commandments. But if you know Allah you wouldn't ask that - you'd say I'm at your service Allah.
My lack of response will only hurt me.
In (8:24):
Don't think that obligations are a burden. Your obligations give you life in this world and in the hereafter.
- The Distributing of the Book of Records -
In (17:13-15):
While you are alive, you have two Angels writing down everything you do and say. In (50:18):
Allah already knows what you will do and how you react, but this record serves as a proof.
When you die, this record is either taken up to the Illiyeen or Sijjeen, and will be there until the Day of Judgement. When Allah comes down, and the people are in a row, the books will be distributed.
Allah protected these books from getting lost.
Sometimes we may do an exam and work hard for it, and the teacher loses it. But our books are preserved and protected, without anything being added or diminished. Allah is الحفيظ.
In (18:10):
How will everyone collect their books?
You'll take your book and read it. If you were a good person, you'll receive your book on your right hand.
In (69:19-24):
If you were an evil person you'd get it in your left hand, be so embarrassed and put it behind your back. You'll try to hide it.
In (69:25-29):
Nothing can help you, except what you did in life. In (53:39-40):
You'll see your deeds in different ways after you die, from a man in your grave, to reading your book, etc. You are the author of your book.
In (18:49):
Humanity in its entirety is witnessing justice. After Allah judges you, you'll be grateful that it's Allah who judges you. He will deal you with justice if you're a wrongdoer; and if you're a believer, He'll deal with you with His mercy and bounty.
Who are the first to be called to account? The Messengers and their Nations.
In (5:109):
In the Hadith:
It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A Prophet will come accompanied by two men, and a Prophet will come accompanied by three, and (some will come) with more or less than that..."
It doesn't matter how many followers they had, they'll all get the reward in full. Don't be deceived by numbers. The results aren't important with Allah - what's important is if you carried out your job or not. In (2:272):
Noah will be called on the Day of Resurrection and he will say, 'Labbaik and Sa`daik, O my Lord!'
Allah will say, 'Did you convey the Message?'
Noah will say, 'Yes.'
Notice that Nuh answered when he was asked about his job, but not regarding the people's response. Because your concern is your job.
His nation will then be asked, 'Did he convey the Message to you?'
They will say, 'No Warner came to us.'
Allah asked both sides, although He knows what everyone did. This shows us the justice of Allah.
Then Allah will say (to Noah), 'Who will bear witness in your favor?'
He will say, 'Muhammad and his followers. So they will testify that he conveyed the Message. And the Apostle (Muhammad) will be a witness over yourselves, and that is what is meant by the Statement of Allah "Thus We have made of you a just and the best nation that you may be witnesses over mankind and the Apostle (Muhammad) will be a witness over yourselves." (2.143)
We will be witnesses because we read the Qur'an, and the Qur'an mentions all the stories of the Prophets with their nations.
The Prophet ﷺ will be a witness over us. But no one will be a witness over him - Allah will ask all the messengers, except the Prophet ﷺ. This is the favour of Allah, He grants to whomever He wills.
Then comes Individual Questioning....
You will be called by your name: So-and-So daughter of So-and-So...
And you will be spoken to directly by Allah:
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah will talk to everyone directly, without a translator..."
In (2:281):
Nowadays, when we write in our diary, the Shaytan makes us write everything that happens to us during that day. Our concern isn't our own actions but all the things people do to us.
That's why the Shaytan loves playing with an oppressed person - because an oppressed person that listens to the Shaytan becomes an oppressor. He makes everything dramatic, and makes you feel sorry for yourself, until you end up oppressing the person who oppressed you. But to be a مظلوم is better than being the ظالم. Don't ever use someone else's action as an excuse for your own evil action.
- The different ways Allah will hold people accountable for their deeds -
In (15:92-93):
1) An easy, private reckoning -
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah will bring the believer very close and privately and ask him "Do you know this sin? Do you know that sin? The believers reply will be, “Yes Oh Lord,” until he is reminded about all of his sins, and he thinks he will perish. Then Allah will say "I covered up your sins during your life, and I will forgive your sins today...."
A person going through this reckoning will have his deeds just skimmed over and quickly gone through.
How can I attain this?
1) توبة and إستغفار
The believer doesn't ignore his sins in this life, he confesses to them and takes the means of expiation.
We have so many opportunities for forgiveness of sins: Our sins are expiated from prayer to a prayer, a Friday to a Friday, Wudhoo expiates sins, etc.
2) In a Hadith: "..Whosoever covers (the sins of) a Muslim, Allah covers (his sins) on the Day of Judgment..." (Bukhari)
The person who goes through this will have every single one of his actions questioned.
What is the first thing a person will be asked about on the Day of Judgement? The prayer.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The first thing the people will be accountable for on the Day of Judgment is prayer, Allah will say to His angels (even though he already knows) : “Look at my servants prayers. Were they complete or not?” If they were complete It will be written as complete. If they were not fully complete Allah will say: “See if my servant has voluntary prayers, If he has them Allah will say: Complete his obligatory prayers shortage with his voluntary prayers.” Then the rest of his deeds will be dealt with in the same manner.”
What are some other things we'll be asked about?
It was narrated from Ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The son of Adam will not be dismissed from before his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he has been questioned about five things:
1) His life and how he spent it
2) His youth and how he used it
3) His wealth and how he earned it
4) and how he disposed of it
4) and how he disposed of it
5) How he acted upon what he acquired of knowledge.”
[Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]
And in (102:8):
The water you drink, the air you breathe, the cushions, the chairs, the cars, etc. are all نعيم. And even then we suffer from ingratitude.
Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger ﷺ went out (of his house) one day or one night, and there he found Abu Bakr and 'Umar also. He said: What has brought you out of your houses at this hour?
They said: Allah's Messenger, it is hunger.
Thereupon he said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, what has brought you out has brought me out too; get up. They got up along with him. and (all of them) came to the house of an Ansari, but he was not at home.
When his wife saw him she said: Most welcome, and Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to her: Where is so and so?
She said: He has gone to get some fresh water for us. When the Ansari came and he saw Allah's Messenger ﷺ and his two Companions, he said: Praise be to Allah, no one has more honourable guests today than I (have). He then went out and brought them a bunch of ripe dates, dry dates and fresh dates, and said: Eat some of them. He then took hold of his long knife (for slaughtering a goat or a sheep).
Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to him: Beware of killing a milch animal. He slaughtered a sheep for them and after they had eaten of it and of the bunch and drank, and when they had taken their fill and had been fully satisfied with the drink,
Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to Abu Bakr and Umar: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, you will certainly be questioned about this bounty on the Day of Judgement. Hunger brought you out of your house, then you did not return until this bounty came to you." [Bukhari]
We are so deceived by these blessings we don't thank Allah for them. We only show gratitude for health when we're sick. When we have free time we complain we are bored.
In (17:36):
We need to rely on Allah - it's not our deeds which will take us to Paradise. It's only His mercy.
- The Scale for weighing the deeds -
The reckoning was to evaluate our deeds, and the scale is to determine their value - and accordingly our rank in Paradise or Hell.
Every scale we see in this life should remind us of this. In life we fear scales, whether it has to do with our weight, etc. We don't want it to be heavy. But on the Day of Judgement, you'll want it to be heavy.
This scale can weigh the heavens and the earth, and it can weigh something as small as an atom.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The Balance will be set up on the Day of Resurrection, and even if the heavens and the earth were to be weighed in it, they would fit. The angels will say, ‘O Lord! Who will be weighed in this?’ Allah will say, ‘Whoever I will among My creation.’ The angels will say, ‘Glory be to You. We did not worship You as You deserved to be worshipped.’”[Al-Hakim - Classed as Sahih by Sh al-Albaani]
In (21:47):
What will be weighed?
1) Our Good Deeds
All our good deeds will be put on the scale. These good deeds should follow two conditions:
1) Done sincerely for Allah
2) Following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Don't underestimate any good deed, even if you were to meet your brother with a smiling face"
Things which weigh heavy on the scale:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah will separate a man belonging to my ummah in the presence of all creatures and will spread ninety-nine scrolls for him, each scroll extending as far as the eye can see. Then He will say, ‘Do you object to anything in this? Have my scribes who keep note wronged you?’ He will say, ‘No, my Lord.’
He will ask him, ‘Do you have any excuse?’
He will say, ‘No my Lord.’
Allah will say, ‘On the contrary, you have with Us a good deed, and you will not be wronged this Day.’ A slip of paper will then be brought out, on which are the words ‘Ashhadu an laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluhu (I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger).’
Allah will say, ‘Bring your weight (i.e., the scrolls).’
The man will say, ‘O Lord, what is this slip of paper in comparison to these scrolls?’
And He will reply, ‘You will not be wronged.’
The scrolls will then be put in one side of the Balance and the slip of paper in the other, and the scrolls will become light and the slip of paper heavy, for nothing could compare in weight to the name of Allah.” [al-Tirmidhi]
2) Good Manners
Narrates from Abu Darda who said: “I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, ‘There is nothing that will be placed in the Balance that will weigh more heavily than a good attitude. The one who has a good attitude will attain thereby the status of one who fasts and prays (a great deal).’” [ al-Tirmidhi]
The Prophet said, "Alhamdulillah fills the scales..."
The Prophet said, "Two words are beloved to the Most Merciful. They are light on the tongue but heavy on the scale:
2) The Person Himself
Your weight will be your value with Allah.
Narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah said: “A huge fat man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and he will not weigh more before Allah than the wing of a gnat. Recite (18:105):
‘and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall assign no weight for them’ [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Ibn Mas’ood was trying to break a siwaak branch from an Araak tree and he had thin legs and the wind started to buffet him, so the people laughed at him.
The Messenger of Allah said, “What are you laughing at?” They said, “O Prophet of Allah, because his legs are so thin.”
He said, “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, they will weigh more heavily in the Balance than Mount Uhud.”
