Introduction:
Allah said in (91:7-10):
It's you who chooses to be wicked or good.
Allah knows what faults we have in our hearts. One of Allah's names is الستير - He loves covering the عورات. He knows our faults, but people don't. They'll only find out your faults when you react. And when they find out your faults they won't have mercy with you. So Allah gave us a dress to cover it - Taqwa.
We think that righteousness means being a model of someone else. But we are different from each other - My faults are different thus my struggle is different. We can't imitate someone else forever. That's why Allah said in (17:84):
E.g. A person has a soft nature while another person has a harsh nature. If a person who is already very soft tries to show a harsh and firm nature in a situation it'll look very bad.
Righteousness should come from yourself. Don't judge anyone because everyone is working according to their nature. Everyone is unique with Allah - our natures are different, and our struggle is different.
Who will be the first to be dressed on the Day of Judgement? Ibrahim عليه السلام. And then the rest of the people will be dressed according to their Taqwa.
What about the disbelievers? They will be clothed, but with clothes from hell fire.
- The Different Forms Sinners will be gathered in on the Day of Judgement -
Punishment isn't limited to the hell fire. There are punishments of the grave and punishments on the Day of Judgement itself. If a Muslim committed these sins, this punishment will be a means of purification for him until he goes to Paradise. May Allah never disgrace us on the Day of Judgement.
1) The Arrogant
They'll be resurrected like ants on the Day of Judgement.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the arrogant will be gathered like ants in the form of men. Humiliation will overwhelm them from all sides. They will be driven to a prison in Hell called Bawlas, with the hottest fire rising over them, and they will be given to drink of the juice of the inhabitants of Hell, which is teenat al-khabaal.” [Tirmithi]
2) The Two-Faced Person
This person will come on the Day of Judgement with two tongues of fire.
Don't think that you'll be in a crowded place where no one knows about you. Every person you've met in your life will see and recognize you, and you'll be embarrassed. Everyone will see the true reality of everyone else. So we should ask Allah by His name الستير to never expose us in this life nor in the next.
3) The Backbiter
He will actually be commanded to eat the flesh of his brother.
4) Those who imitate the creation of Allah - whether they are drawing or making statues
They'll be commanded to give a soul to their creation.
"...ومن صور صورة، عذب وكلف أن ينفخ فيها الروح وليس بنافخ"
"...and he who makes a picture (of people or other creatures with a soul, such as animals and insects) will be (severely punished), and he will be asked to infuse spirit therein, which he will not be able to do." [Bukhari]
5) The person who didn't pay Zakat
A snake will encircle his neck and bite his cheeks saying, "I am your money, I am your treasure" [Bukhari]
6) People who turn away whenever they are reminded about Allah
They will be gathered blind. In (20:124-127):
Whenever a reminder comes, don't turn away. Even if you've heard it 100 times.
He will be commanded to tie a knot between two barley seeds.
"من تحلم بحلم لم يره، كُلف أن يعقد بين شعيرتين ولن يفعل..."
Ibn 'Abbas said: The Prophet ﷺ said, "He who narrates a dream which he has not seen will be put to trouble to join into a knot two barley seeds which he will not be able to do..."
[Al-Bukhari].
8) The person who always used to beg for money
He will have lacerations on his face; no dignity.
Samurah bin Jundab said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Begging will be but lacerations on a man's face (on the Day of Resurrection). Unless he asks a man in authority or when he has no alternative."'
9) The person who listens to other people's conversations while they hate it
".. ومن استمع إلى حديث قوم وهم له كارهون، صب في أذنيه الآنُك يوم القيامة..."
"...and he who seeks to listen to the talk of a people (secretly) will have molten lead poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection..."
That's why:
" من حسن إسلام المرء تركه ما لا يعنيه"
"It is from the excellence of (a believer's) Islam that he should shun that which is of no concern to him".
- The Seven Groups of People whom Allah will not speak to -
In this life, if someone talked to everyone else and neglected you, you'd feel terrible. Imagine رب العالمين turning away and neglecting you.
1) The one who conceals knowledge
In (2:174):
2) A person who falsely swears to sell a product.
A person who reminds others of his favours
4) The man who lets his lower garment hang below his ankles. Anything below the ankle is in the fire.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “There are three whom Allaah will not look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment.” We said, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allaah? For they have indeed failed and are losers.” He said, “The one who reminds others of his favours, the one who lets his lower garment hang below his ankles, and the one who sells his product by swearing false oaths.” [al-Tirmidhi]
5) An old man who commits adultery.
This is because he's an old man and has less desires. It's worse than a young man who commits adultery, although it's forbidden and evil for both.
6) A ruler who lies
When you have power and people already listen to you there's no need to lie.
7) A poor but arrogant man.
The three aforementioned groups are people who commit sins when there's no desire or need to commit them.
Amidst all this chaos, with people scattered everywhere, various punishments afflicting sinners, there'll be another scene.
In (89:23-27):
Hell fire will be displayed in the land of gathering for everyone to see. Paradise is enclosed for those who enter it - like a covered woman whose husband only gets to see her. But everyone will see and pass over hell fire. The believer will see it and increase in gratitude to Allah for saving him from it.
The Prophet [ﷺ] said:
❝Hellfire will be brought with 70,000 hooks; on each hook there will be 70,000 angels.❞
The fire speaks, has feelings, breathes, and makes sounds. It's a creation of Allah. In (67:7-8):
The Hell Fire is the justice of Allah.
Even the people of Hell Fire will say الحمد لله while in it.
Why? Because no one will go to Paradise or Hell until they witness the perfect attributes of Allah - His perfect mercy, justice, kindness, etc. They know they deserve it.
What will the disbelievers say when they stand in front of the fire?
In (6:27-29):
In (14:44):
In (42:44-47):
The key to be saved from all this:
In (39:56-60):
There will be so much regret for the disbeliever on the Day of Judgement. And Allah described this regret in (25:26-29):
Allah described Himself with His name الرحمن. Don't despair, attach yourself to Allah's mercy. It's out of His mercy that He informs us of what will happen in the future.
The wrongdoer will bite his hands in regret. If only he had taken the path with the Prophet ﷺ. If only he hadn't taken so-and-so as a friend. This shows us that a good companion will take us to Paradise, and a bad companion will lead us to Hell. Your religion is the religion of your companion. You are your companion.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "A person is on the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends" [Bukhari]
In the next verse Allah talks about the Qur'an:
If you forsake the Qur'an you'll have bad friends. Make the Qur'an your companion.
How will the gathering be for the believers?
In the same place it'll be difficult and severe for some, and peaceful and easy for others.
In (21:101-103):
Hell Fire will be displayed - everyone will be in a state of fear and panic. But the believers will be far away from it and won't hear its sound. It won't grieve them and the Angels will receive and welcome them.
Why? In their lives they avoided any path or sin which led to Hell Fire. They didn't follow the footsteps of the Shaytan.
If we equate sins with Hell Fire and good deeds with Paradise, we'll avoid sins and hasten to do good deeds.
In (43:66-69):
All friends on the Day of Judgement will be enemies - except for the متقين. They'll remain friends. Any kind of relationship based on desire or self-interest will turn into enmity. The متقين loved each other for Allah, sat with each other for Allah, met each other for Allah; they do everything together for Allah. They stopped their heart from being attached to other than Allah. This is the only relationship that will be valid on that day.
It's not the Angels that'll say that, but Allah. He will prevent them from feeling fear or grief.
How will I attain this privilege?
We need to prepare ourselves in this life, to attain security on the Day of Judgement. What other things can I do to attain safety and security?
In (79:10-12):
This fear you feel now will save you from the fear in the next life.
Allah said in a Hadith Qudsi: "By My might, I shall not combine in My slave two fears and two securities, for, if he fears Me in this world, I shall make him secure on the Day of Resurrection; and if he feels secure about Me (does not fear Me) in this world, I shall terrify him on the Day of Resurrection."
Before the sun disappears it'll come down until it's a mile above the heads of the creation. People will start to sweat. Some people will sweat until their ankles, others will sweat until their knees, some until their bellies, others until their neck. There will be people who drown in their sweat. It all depends on your sins.
This is a punishment for the disbeliever and a purification for the believer.
Every time you sweat or feel heat in this life, remember this situation on the Day of Judgement.
There are people who will be shaded under the throne of Allah - a day where there is no shade except this shade. Who are they?
A Just Ruler
A Young Person who grew up in the worship of Allah
A Man whose heart is attached to the Masjid
He prays, goes home, and his heart yearns to go back and pray.
People who loved each other for the sake of Allah
They fought their desires to love each other not for any interest - but for Allah alone.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Verily, Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who love each other for the sake of my glory? Today, I will shelter them in my shade on a day when there is no shade but mine.”
And in another Hadith:
There will be men on the Day of Judgement with a rank, even the Prophets and Martyrs will not even have.”
At this the companions were quiet but a bedouin man, made a sign with his hand and asked, “Ya Rasulullah, can you describe them to us so that we may know them?”
At this the Prophet ﷺ got very happy and described them, “They are those Muslims who love each other for the sake of Allah, despite being from different cities, different tribes, different clans and different nations.
And because of their love for one another, Allah will grant them pulpits of light, clothing of light and emanating light, and the Prophets and Martyrs will envy them. They are the Awliya of Allah.” (Musnad of Imam Ahmed)
When you love someone for Allah you'll always be tested on it - because it's a great, special type of love. It has a lot of reward so it requires a lot of striving in life.
A man who was called by a beautiful woman with position (for illegal intercourse) and he says I fear Allah.
He's in a time when a tempting sin is coming to him, but he abstains out of fear of Allah. He will be shaded under the shade of Allah.
A person who remembered Allah alone and cried
Allah gave us tears as a form of expression - and they have a great value in Allah's sight. Your tears can be a means of shading you. When you cry for other people you won't be rewarded for it.
No one appreciates your tears like your Creator.
Spending so secretly that your left hand doesn't know what your right hand gives
8) If you give time for a person to pay their loan back to you, or completely free him of the responsibility.
On the authority of Abu Huraira from the Prophet ﷺ who said, ”Whoever relieves a believer’s distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter..."
All this occurs while people are still in the gathering. The accounting hasn't begun yet. Everyone's waiting for it to start.
