Allah said regarding the Angels in (2:30):
When you believe in this name, your action should be: تقديس الله
تقديس is to ascribe all perfection to Allah while negating imperfection from Him. And this equates thinking good about Allah.
القدوس هو
1) الطاهر:
a) Pure in Himself
b) The One who purifies others
Don't think that a person is pure in himself. Allah is القدوس and is the source of all the purity around the world, whether it is external or internal purity.
i) External Purity
In (74:4):
Islam is a religion which emphasizes cleanliness. The first chapter you find in the books of Fiqh is about طهارة.
E.g. Narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet ﷺ said, "He who eats of this plant (garlic) should not approach our mosque and should not harm us with the odour of garlic" (Muslim)
People purify themselves for people. They take care of their homes when guests come and bodies when they go for parties. When you know القدوس and that He loves purity and cleanliness, you will purify yourself for Him.
A Muslim is a clean person. He uses water 5 times a day minimum to clean himself before he prays.
The minimum purity is water. And if you can't use water, then sand.
We are made of water and sand. And Allah, القدوس, gave them the properties of cleanliness.
The Prophet ﷺ said, "The (whole) earth has been made a place of prayer and a means of purification for me..." [Bukhari]
When you take care of your external purity, it helps purify yourself internally:
ii) Internal Purity
In (9:28):
People misinterpret this to mean external purity, and go as far as avoiding touching the disbelievers or hiring them. Their impurity is internal, and it's due to their Shirk. We can never compare a believer with a disbeliever, or say that the latter is better than the former, because the believers internal purity is greater than that of a disbeliever.
The human is by default clean. We were all born internally pure.
Narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every child is born in a state of فطرة, then his parents make him into a Jew, or a Christian, or a Magian." [Agreed upon]
We get dirty through the sins and evil we commit. If someone is sinning, a Mushrik, or a Kaafir, they are dirty on the inside. You can't clean this with water, sand, or soap.
We take so much care of our external cleanliness, but neglect our inside.
How do I purify myself on the inside?
1) التوبة
2) الاستغفار
Narrated by Abu Hurairah that the Prophet ﷺ said
Verily, when the believer commits a sin, a black spot appears upon his heart. If he repents and abandons the sin and seeks forgiveness, his heart will be polished, but if he increases in sin, the blackness increases. That is the covering which Allah has mentioned in his Book: Nay, but on their hearts is a covering because of what they have earned. (83:14) (Ibn Majah)
When you experience the opposite of something you begin to appreciate it before. Dirt and filth makes you appreciate cleanliness. That's why when people embrace Islam they feel a sense of happiness and cleanliness. The darkness of sin and disbelief makes a person appreciate the light of Islam.
The believer is quick to renew his Wudhoo and seek forgiveness because he always wants to be in a state of cleanliness.
A scholar said in a poem:
"أحسن الله بنـــــــــــا أن............. الخطايا لا تفــــــــــوح"
If sins had a bad smell, everyone would be quick to repent. But it's a test of the unseen.
When the evil person dies, his soul will be shrouded with a shroud of the hellfire, and he will be carried up to the heavens, Every time he passes a group of angels they will say, "What is this bad smell?" and call him by the worst of names.
They smell bad because of their sins.
There are cases of people who smelt like musk after they died. This is because of their good deeds.
Paradise is the place of all beautiful fragrances. The people of paradise will smell good. And the smell in the hellfire will be awful.
3) Increasing in good deeds
In (11:114):
4) Through Calamities
All the distresses, problems, sicknesses, sadness, pain, clean the person from inside.
The Prophet ﷺ said,
" مَا يُصِيبُ الْمُسْلِمَ مِنْ نَصَبٍ وَلاَ وَصَبٍ وَلاَ هَمٍّ وَلاَ حُزْنٍ وَلاَ أَذًى وَلاَ غَمٍّ حَتَّى الشَّوْكَةِ يُشَاكُهَا، إِلاَّ كَفَّرَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ "
"No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress, befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but Allah expiates some of his sins because of that" [Bukhari]
In (2:222):
Both internal and external purity are covered in this verse.
2) المتبارك
Allah is blessed in Himself and He is the One that blesses. He is attributed with بركة as well as being the source of it. بركة can't be separated from Allah.
E.g. A human being can be مبارك when he purifies himself, helps people, etc. but this isn't something attached to him because he isn't always like this. It may increase or decrease.
E.g. In the Prophet ﷺ's time, his sweat, spit, body had بركة. After he died, this بركة discontinued.
Don't take بركة from human beings, because they're not قدوس.
E.g. People putting verses around their neck, hanging it in the house to bring بركة. This is wrong.
E.g. كسوة الكعبة. People cut it and bring it home thinking there's بركة in it. Or the dirt from Makkah. Or they touch people that come from Umrah, thinking that they have بركة on them. This is all due to ignorance. The بركة in Masjid AlHaraam isn't tangible. It's praying there that reaps multiple rewards.
People misunderstand this concept. They attach themselves to tangible things to attain بركة because they want a shortcut.
بركة comes when you do good deeds, pray in your house, etc.
It's easier for people to hang a verse than to read it. But بركة is something that we need to make effort to attain.
