In (3:193):
"The caller to إيمان is the Qur'an" - At-Tabari
How can the Qur'an be a means of attaining إيمان?
إيمان means التصديق الجازم.
It is to believe with certainty in matters which are unseen to us (E.g. The articles of faith, the branches of faith, etc.). The Qur'an contains knowledge of the غيب.
E.g. The Jinn
If you talk about the Jinn to anyone, the first feeling they have is fear. Their impression is that the Jinn are only created to harm people, although there is a Surah in the Qur'an called سورة الجن, which tells us there are good Jinn, who may be better than many humans.
Our information about Jinn comes from scary stories, superstitions, documentaries, and not from the Qur'an and Sunnah, that's why we are afraid of them. We have to correct our belief regarding them.
Allah praised them for their good conduct in (72:10):
They didn't attribute evil to Allah, although both good and evil is in Allah's hands. This shows us their good manners with Allah.
There are many examples of this in the Qur'an.
E.g. In the story of Musa and Khidr:
How can I reach the degree of certainty when I recite the Qur'an?
1) Read the Qur'an properly; with إحسان.
2) You should be able to bring proofs from the Qur'an for every article of faith.
3) The more you read and collect evidences on that article of faith, the more your faith in it will increase. Repeat the knowledge until this information becomes firmly established in your heart, unblemished by any doubt.
E.g. Allah is الغفور.
You go through the Qur'an from beginning to end and pick out all the verses which deal with this name, it's meaning, it's impact on our lives, the means of attaining the forgiveness of Allah, etc.
E.g. You want to increase your faith in one of the Prophets. Go through the whole Qur'an finding places where Allah mentions this Prophet.
When you're finished do another name of Allah, or another topic. This is the journey of your life. You'll spend your life strengthening your faith from the Qur'an. And you can let this extend to the Hadith as well.
Just as we stand in front of the mirror to fix our appearance, the Qur'an is a mirror wherein the believer fixes his manners, deeds, way of thinking, and belief.
He holds the Qur'an and it reflects and weighs his actions, so he reforms his defects.
He sees which of his actions are beautiful and praises Allah for it and sees which of his actions are ugly and repents and makes an effort to reform himself.
E.g. In the Qur'an, Allah recounts the behaviour of Bani Israeel and how they dealt with their Messengers, the Book Allah revealed to them, and His commands.
Why? In order for it to be a warning for us.
In (2:139):
The Jews were expecting a Prophet to come and boasted to the Arab pagans living in Madinah, saying that when he came they would follow him and fight against them. But when Allah sent the Prophet ﷺ from the Arabs, they rejected him out of envy.
How do I use this information as a mirror? Reflect on your life. You may be doing the same thing. All of us claim that we seek truth and guidance, but when the truth comes from someone whom we are in conflict with, or we deem inferior to us, are we reluctant to accept it?
E.g. The attitude of Iblis with Adam عليه سلام. He refused to prostrate to him out of arrogance.
We should also reflect over every command and prohibition in the Qur'an.
E.g. The laws regarding penalties. We have to ask ourselves:
-> If we apply these laws,
-> If we accept them. Some people may reject them or feel that they're too harsh. This means that there's something wrong with your belief. The believer knows that the One who set these laws is Allah, الحكيم العليم.
-> Do you overlook them because you feel as if the situation could never apply to you - or do you fear for yourself?
We have to present ourselves to the Qur'an.
