One of the descriptions of the hypocrites is that they mock:
They make fun of Allah, His آيات, His Messenger. They mock the religion, the Sunnah, the Shari'ah, etc.
Mocking the scholars and the believers is also one of the descriptions of the disbelievers and the hypocrites. In (2:212):
In (23:109-111):
In (83:29-36):
The disbelievers always take the believers, and what they wear, how they live, etc. as a subject of mockery. On the Day of Judgement, the case will be the opposite.
Don't give heed to what the disbelievers do and say. It is one of their descriptions to laugh at the believers. And the hypocrites have the same description. In (2:14):
The scholars said that mocking is of two kinds:
1) Mocking the appearance, character, features, etc. of the believers. This is a major sin.
Evidence: (49:11)
2) Mocking the believers because of the knowledge they have, or because they are adhering and applying the Shar'iah. This is كفر.
Evidence: (9:66)
Allah considered what the man said about the companions كفر, because it is Allah who chose the companions to be the companions of the Prophet.
This verse is also an evidence that mocking the believers and scholars is considered one of the nullifiers of ايمان.
People take this very lightly nowadays.
Verse 67:
In the previous verses Allah described the hypocrites saying, "و منهم". Now he mentions all the hypocrites. They all have the following descriptions, whether female or male, young or old.
بعضهم من بعض -> They resemble each other and are together.
1) يأمرون بالمنكر
Everything that Allah has forbidden is called منكر whether it is a bad deed, bad manners, كفر, شرك, etc.
The hypocrites enjoin all kinds of منكر on each other. They call to evil everywhere they go.
2) و ينهون عن المعروف
Every good which Allah ordained is considered المعروف.
3) و يقبضون أيديهم
4) نسوا الله فنسيهم
النسيان has two meanings:
1) ترك (Abandonment)
2) الذهول عن الشئ (Forgetfulness) -> This is natural
The hypocrites deliberately abandoned remembrance of Allah.
فنسيهم = Allah doesn't forget. He is never attributed with forgetfulness; rather Allah abandoned them.
How did Allah abandon them? Allah made them forget to take the means of attaining the mercy of Allah. He didn't guide them. And in the hereafter, Allah will leave them in the hellfire to abide therein forever.
Verse 68:
Allah mentions the منافقين before the كفار because the punishment of the hypocrites is more severe than the punishment of the disbelievers.
In Verse 69, Allah addresses the hypocrites directly:
The people who came before you did the same as you did. And Allah will deal with you, O hypocrites, in the same way. The hypocrites did the same as the people before them, therefore they deserve the same punishment.
You took a portion of this Dunya and indulged in play and falsehood, and enjoyed your time, using the blessings of Allah in disobedience to Him. You did what made you deserve the punishment
The believers use the blessings of Allah, and enjoy it, but in the way pleasing to Allah. They will not use it in disobedience to Him. This is the difference between the disbelievers + hypocrites and believers.
حبطت أعمالهم -> All their deeds will go in vain and will bear no weight on the Day of Judgement.
Then Allah advises the hypocrites:
Verse 70:
Look at what happened before you. Allah drowned the people of Nuh. And He punished Ad with wind. He destroyed Thamud with a cry. Allah destroyed the people of Ibrahim's King, Nimrud. The people of Madyan (The people of Shu'aib) were punished by Allah by a cloud that gave extreme heat to the extent that their flesh melted, and Allah destroyed them with an earthquake. The people of Lut were punished with three punishments.
Their messengers came to them with clear proofs but they didn't listen and rejected their message.
Take the admonition, and look at how Allah dealt with these people. Don't do as they did or the same punishment will befall you.
It is out of Allah's mercy that He reminds us what He did to the previous nations.
Verse 71:
The Qur'an is مثاني. Whenever Allah mentions a description of the disbelievers or hypocrites, He mentions the description of the believers.
------
When we read about the hypocrites we tend to exempt ourselves. Read these characteristics and reflect over your life:
1) يأمرون بالمنكر
E.g. There are parents who are keen to have family gatherings which are mixed and force all their children to come. They are enjoining منكر.
HADITH: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Beware of entering upon women." A man of the Ansaar asked, "O Messenger of Allaah, what do you think about the brother-in-law?" He said, "The brother-in-law is death." [Bukhari]
E.g. She wants to cover herself, but they tell her to wait until she's married, because she's still young.
2) ينهون عن المعروف
Forbidding the people from any type of good.
In Verse 81:
In (63:7):
E.g. Calling people to rebel against the leaders and rulers.
E.g. Defaming others beause they strictly adhere to the سنة and forbidding them from it; calling them extremists. These labels are all included in the verses about mocking and enjoining منكر. They want to forbid people from adhering to religion, and make the youth hate the religion.
This is why we find two extremes nowadays in the Muslim world: 1) Atheists 2) Khawarij
The Muslims don't want to be like the Khawarij, so they become atheists. The Khawarij see these atheists and enforce their ideologies.
This is all due to ignorance.
Be in the middle. Do what Allah is pleased with and stay away from what He hates.
The hypocrites adorn falsehood, cover the truth with falsehood, and people follow them ignorantly.
E.g. Forbidding good conduct, such as modesty. Mothers buy indecent clothes for their daughters, and encourage girls to be immodest.
Note: Good conduct becomes good conduct when it is based on ايمان.
HADITH: Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "Anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor, and anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should entertain his guest generously and anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet. (i.e. abstain from all kinds of evil and dirty talk). [Bukhari]
Good conduct shouldn't be based on your هواء.
Some hypocrites have good conduct and may sometimes call others to respect the elderly, to talk gently, to show respect, etc. They do this for two reasons:
a) For their own interests. They want some worldly gain.
They are motivated by desire.
b) Allah created us, by nature, to love justice, good manners, to show mercy and we hate oppression, transgression, etc. This is something in their فطرة.
This explains the attitude of the disbelievers all around the world. There are still some traces of the فطرة in them. But they don't think or practice it for Allah at all. There is no إيمان in their hearts. They don't show any regard for the reward in the hereafter. Their concern is solely Dunya related.
3) يقبضون ايديهم
They are miserly. They are the enemies of spending and hate it when someone asks them to spend.
صدقة is derived from صدق and صدق means قوة.
صدقة proves ones strong إيمان
HADITH: "...والصدقة برهان..." [Muslim]
In many verses in the Qur'an Allah joined between spending and faith. Because إنفاق is a proof of your strong faith.
In (63:9-10):
The person mentioned in the verse didn't ask for respite for anything except charity. Because charity is a proof of your strong ايمان. You have to think about the connection between the two. Spend now, whilst you are still alive.
If a hypocrite is spending, then this is either because he wants to show off, be known, famous, or because this is something in his nature. He may be a generous person who can't say no to anyone.
We have to struggle hard to be sincere when we are doing good. If you have this good characteristic already, strive hard to use it for Allah's sake. Allah created this in you in order that you'd use it to seek nearness to Him.
If you discover you have a characteristic of hypocrisy then repent, because the door of repentance is still open.
