Reminder of the reason we are studying this name:
Learning the name العزيز corrects your Tawheed, because it is mentioned three times in سورة آلِ عمران with لا اله الا الله. Allah emphasizes that no one deserves our hearts attachment except Him, العزيز. When you know this name, your heart will not be distracted by or attached to the people.
Allah mentioned this name 92 times in the Qur'an, and when Allah mentions a name frequently, it means we are in dire need of this name daily. We are living our lives under the shade of the name of Allah, العزيز.
العزيز has four meanings with regards to Allah:
Allah is impossible to overcome or defeat. His supremacy is immune. No one can touch it with harm.
4) Unique in His attributes.
The attribute that this name implies is عزة. In (10:65):
Shaykh AbdulRazzaq AlBadr said, "All types of عزة belong to Allah"
There are three types of عزه (according to السعدي):
E.g. (51:58)
He sustains abundantly, and provides for all the creation in the heavens and the earth. There is no one but Allah is providing for him. By Allah's might and strength, He caused this رزق to reach every one of His creation. No one can prevent the رزق of Allah.
(41:15)
The Impact of عزة القوة: By Allah's strength and power He created the heavens and earth and brought everything into existence. In (43:9):
By His might and power, He destroyed the disbelievers and rescued the believers. In (26:65-68):
By His might and power, He grasps the heavens and earth lest they move from their places.
By His power and might, He will resurrect all creation for judgement regardless if they are burnt, cut into pieces, etc.
There is no power and might in the upper and lower world except from Allah. We have no strength unless Allah gives us the strength.
Verses that talk about the مشيئة الله goes under this type of عزة as well.
(3:26-27):
The impact of this type of عزة: We live this type of عزة day and night.
-> Allah subdued us with sleep. We may want to do something but we get overpowered through sleep. We lose our strength, our power, we can't even think sometimes.
-> Sometimes we may intend to take an action and then we lose our resolve to carry it out. Because whatever Allah wills happens, and whatever Allah doesn't will will not happen.
-> There are times where you want to wake up in the morning, and you set a million alarms, inform everyone in the house, but if Allah doesn't will for you to wake up, you will never go. When we don't wake up we blame people for not waking us up, the company for not manufacturing proper alarms, etc. It is not people nor the alarms, it is Allah wanting to show you He is العزيز. But we keep failing the test.
Allah is controlling everything, it is not us.
-> Allah overpowers us with sickness. Imagine, a virus which we can't see, attacks us and causes us to be stuck in bed for days on end.
-> Allah overpowers us with death. When the time of death arrives, no one can avert it, even for a second.
Kingship
-> The transferral of kingship will not happen except without Allah's عزة. If you ask a King to give up his throne, he wouldn't. But Allah would remove him from that position by His عزة. Allah honours whomever He wills and disgraces whomever He wills.
-> Allah is the One who grants عزة to whomever He wills, whenever He wills, however He wills.
-> Allah subjugated the sun, the moon, the stars, the sea, the wind, etc. by His عزة for our service. They are all under Allah's subdual and control.
In (36:28), (6:96):
This is by Allah's power and might. He is the One controlling the sun, moon, and their movement. He knows the need of His creation.
The sun never refuses to rise. They are مساخارات.
-> The subjugation of the Jinn and the Devils for Sulayman عليه سلام. In (34:12-13):
If any one claims the Jinn is serving him now then he is a liar, because Allah didn't give the kingdom he gave to Sulayman to anyone after him, due to his invocation.
If the Shayateen serve a person, it's due to a reason.
A man had Jinn serving him to find lost items in his village. He would tell the people of the village where to find it until he became famous, honored and known in other villages. The Jinn then came to him and said, "We won't help you anymore until you worship us"
The devils continued serving Sulayman until a year after Sulayman died. The Jinn didn't know he was dead until a worm starting chewing on Sulaymans stick, and he fell down. It became clear to the Jinn and the people that they didn't have knowledge of the unseen. This is mentioned in سورة النمل.
