The Prophet used to seek refuge with Allah from four matters:
" اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الأَرْبَعِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لاَ يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لاَ تَشْبَعُ وَمِنْ دُعَاءٍ لاَ يُسْمَعُ "
The relation between them:
This first effect of knowledge is seen on the heart of the person. It should become humble, soft, and submissive to Allah. There are people, however, who may be learning yet their heart remains hard. The truth does not reach their heart. This is because the knowledge they learn is علم لا ينفع.
The person with a submissive heart had an attentive heart. He may not necessarily be performing abundant amounts of good deeds, however whatever action he takes, he knows for whose sake he's doing the deed, what he's hoping to get of reward. It's about the quality of the action, not the quantity.
Knowledge also has an impact on the contentment of a person. The more he learns about Allah, the Day of Judgment, the more this world loses value in his heart. He is satisfied with whatever Allah gives him. He takes whatever he gets, and he is grateful for it. He doesn't keep seeking for more and more of this world.
But the person whose knowledge is void of benefit has a heart diverted with this world. Therefore, whenever he makes dua it will be with a heedless, diverted heart.
HADITH: The Prophet said: “Call upon Allaah when you are certain of a response, and remember that Allaah will not answer a du’aa’ that comes from a negligent and heedless heart.” (Al-Tirmidhi, 3479)
These are all measurements of how beneficial the knowledge you learn is.
----
The most important knowledge one should learn is the knowledge about Allah. This is our purpose in this world. Allah created us to know him, worship him, love him. He didn't create us to play and waste our life for this world.
HADITH: The Prophet said, "It has been revealed to me that you people will be put to trial in your graves a similar trial to the trial of Dajjal.......as for the true believer/muslim, after he answers the questions his grave, the angel will ask him "How did you know this?" He will say, "Muhammed came with clear evidences and signs, so we responded to his call and we believed in all that he brought" Thr Angels will say, "Sleep in peace, we knew that you believed with certainty"
The Prophet came with the Qur'an and Sunnah, which contain all the articles of faith. The believer believed in this and didn't doubt in it when he lived in the Dunya. He believed with certainty. He had علم اليقين، then عين اليقين, until he reached حق اليقين. This person would receive the knowledge about Allah, believing, and living in accordance to to it throughout his life.
E.g. We all recite سورة الإخلاص daily. But if you ask someone who is الصمد، what is the meaning of it, what is the impact of it in your life, most people don't know. This is not the state of the one who believes with certainty. He knows the names, the meanings
of the names, the impacts of the names, and worships Allah according to it.
We want our state to be the state of the person mentioned above, yet we go through situations daily where Allah tests our belief in Him, and yet we act as if we have no knowledge about Allah.
You need to explain every situation you go through. Think of Allah with everything you see, feel, hear.
E.g. You were saved from a car accident. Allah is الحفيظ, no one saved you except him.
"و اما بنعمت ربك فحدث"
We bring up our kids with their hearts attached to everything except Allah. If your child is afraid you tell them not to worry because you're there, instead of telling them that Allah will protect them.
Allah makes us go through situations because He wants us to think of Him, act upon His names and attributes. He doesn't want us to fall into grief, sorrow. If you are not guided to worship Allah in that situation, them implore Allah to guide you.
Use the names of Allah in your dua.
