Verses 56 and 57:
If they had the chance to fortify themselves they would run and hide. This is due to their intense fear.
Benefits:
- We have to pay attention to the Hadiths in which the Prophet said, "He is not one of us who does such-and-such"
This means that the person has committed a major sin.
- Be truthful with yourself, Allah, and the people. The hypocrites are afraid because they lie. The believers are at rest because they're always truthful.
Verse 58:
Whenever Allah wants to talk about the hypocrites, He uses "و منهم"
From this we learn that whenever we want to talk about a certain nationality, group, etc. of people, don't generalize. Don't say, "They're all like that". Allah is teaching us a manner here.
لمز is a characteristic of the hypocrite. They criticize, but not for a good reason. They do so seeking their own benefit through it. They want to defame and find defects in the person in front of them (in this verse it's directed to the Prophet).
After Hunayn the Prophet distributed the booty of the battle. He gave some and didn't give others; وحي from Allah.
A man from the hypocrites told the Prophet to distribute fairly.
They were either defaming the obligation of giving charity (as if they are saying, "we work hard and the poor take 2.5% of our earning" unaware that it is Allah, the Creator of the heavens and earth who enjoined this) or the way it's distributed, or its amount.
If they are given they will be satisfied and their mouths shut.
If they are not given they will be enraged.
You may say, 'I'm not like this' but check your pleasure at times of distress and prosperity. Are you pleased with Allah in both cases?
They don't criticize because they want to suggest something good, but in order for them to be given more - السعدي
This can happen anywhere. It could be in your company, school, etc. If other people get bonuses and you don't, you shouldn't criticize. They are getting something extra, and it is from Allah, and a test for you. You may be a hard worker and honest, and others may not be, but Allah is testing you.
Test the hypocrisy in yourself. Look at all the conflicts that happen between people, it's mostly because of this issue. 'They are given and we are not given'. And this is one of the characteristics of the hypocrites.
The Hypocrites are characterized with شح
They are miserly towards spending good and covet to get more of worldly gain.
In (33:19):
This isn't limited to money. They are miserly and stingy in their efforts as well. This shows us that they are only are concerned about their own interests.
The slaves state should not be like this, such that his pleasure and anger follows worldly whims. His pleasure and anger should be in accordance to what Allah and the Prophet is pleased with - السعدي
Characteristics of the Hypocrites:
1) They criticize with bad intention. You can criticize seeking the good for someone (I.e. Constructive criticism )
2) They are miserly and greedy.
What is the correct attitude to have?
Allah is guiding us to noble conduct. In Verse 59:
Be content with what Allah has given you.
Allah is sufficient for you, and He will give you.
Have hope and desire that Allah will give you of His bounty. If He gives there is good in it, and if He doesn't give then there is good in not giving.
We are imploring Allah to attain what benefits us and to drive away what harms us. Whoever does this will be saved from hypocrisy -
Note: This is not a دعاء. It is a piece of information. Allah is telling us a manner that we should follow in such a situation.
The Prophet has told us what invocations to say and when to say them.
Lessons:
1) The believers are content with Allah.
Imam ashShafi said, "If your acceptance of the affliction is the same as your acceptance in prosperity, the you are really pleased with Allah, and Allah will be pleased with you"
2) The hypocrites don't love good for others. In (69:34):
Remedy: Trust Allah. He didn't give you because there is good in withholding.
Allah then mentions to whom الصدقات should be given to. He tells us who really deseves it.
In Verse 60:
The hypocrites harm and hurt the Prophet. They criticize him saying that he listens to everyone and can't distinguish between the lying and the truthful. They're basically accusing him of naivety.
Allah answered them. Yes, he listens, but that is good for you. If the Prophet rejected your excuses, your reality would be exposed, and the people would all know that you are hypocrites. The Prophet listened to their excuses and didn't comment. He knew the hypocrites by name, but kept silent, and they thought he was naive.
This indicates the good conduct of the Prophet. It also shows us that didn't give them heed. And he was acting upon the command of Allah in Verse 95:
In this verse Allah mentions that they are swearing again. When you hear your children swearing frequently then stop them. Excessive swearing indicates that they are not magnifying Allah. They swear for even trivial matters.
Allah mentions an important characteristic of the Prophet:
There are two kinds of إيمان:
1) The one that saves a person from hellfire and admits them to Paradise, and that is إيمان بالله.
The Prophet يصدق المؤمنين
When the brothers of Yusuf swore to their father, they said, "و ما انت بمؤمن لنا"
Because of his belief in Allah, he deals with people according to the command of Allah.
Allah commanded him to pardon people, deal with them with إحسان, to enjoin good and forbid evil, to turn away from the foolish.
He was the perfect human.
Through him, people are guided. We take his conduct as an example. And to be able to behave
like this requires a lot of self جهاد.
Harming the Prophet, whether it by statement or action, is a grave sin. Allah says in (33:57):
سورة الأحزاب also talks about the hypocrites, and you find the word يؤذون being mentioned three times. They annoyed the Prophet when Allah commanded him to marry his cousin Zaynab, who was previously married to Zayd Ibn Harithah, his adopted son. This سورة annuals adoption in Islam, and in order to cancel it, Allah commanded the Prophet with this marriage.
The hypocrites took advantage of this and defamed the Prophet.
In (33:69):
How can one annoy the Prophet?
It includes every harm with statements and actions such as abusing him, defaming him, attributing deficiency to him, or his سنة, his companions (Hadith: Don't abuse my companions), his wives, etc.
Annoying the Prophet isn't like annoying any other person. This is because abusing, defaming, annoying him, affects the entire religion. One will not believe in Allah unless he believes in the Prophet. If lies are spread about him and people begin to accept these lies, then it taints the image of the religion.
The new generation does not respect or venerate the Prophet, although this is one of the requirements of إيمان.
Allah chose him and sent him as a Messenger. When you defame him, it will gradually cause you to defame and belittle the religion.
Another way of annoying the Prophet is by abandoning the سنة whether it is what he said, did, or approved.
HADITH: Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd: I heard the Prophet saying, "I am your predecessor at the Kawther, and whoever will come to it, will drink from it, and whoever will drink from it, will never become thirsty after that. There will come to me some people whom I know and they know me, and then a barrier will be set up between me and them." Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri added that the Prophet further said: "I will say those people are from me. It will be said, 'You do not know what changes and new things they did after you.' Then I will say, 'Far removed (from mercy), far removed (from mercy), those who changed (the religion) after me! "
Innovating in the religion is also a kind of annoying the Prophet.
If someone criticizes the سنة, denies it, doesn't implement it, respond to the command of the Prophet, or take it as a way of life, has annoyed the Prophet.
E.g. People who rebel against the rulers are disobeying the Prophet and his commands. Read كتابا الفتن in صحيح البخاري and see the Prophets advice when dealing with an unjust ruler.
These are just a few examples of the current situation around us. People don't realize the gravity of the situation, that they could earn the curse of Allah and a painful punishment by their actions.
- Whoever implements the سنة will be saved from the severe torment and the curse of Allah -
