بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
Rajab is one of the sacred months in which good deeds are multiplied in reward and sins are more grievous in Allah's sight.
The sins of the heart are more serious than the sins of the limbs and tongue.
Sitting in an assembly of remembrance and studying about Allah's noble names, attributes, and actions is one of the greatest deeds one can hope to come closer to Allah with.
We should hope to please Allah, to make your scale heavy on the Day of Judgement.
Hadith: Abu Hurayrah passed by the market in Madinah and said to the people, "Oh people, what has disheartened you?" they said, "from what?" He said, "The inheritance of the Prophet is being distributed and you aren't going to take your share from it?" The people went in haste to the Masjid in search of the inheritance. After some time they came back and complained that there was nothing there. They only found people studying the halal and haram. He said, "Woe to you, this is the inheritance of the Prophet"
When the Prophet passed away he didn't leave behind the Dirham and Dinar. He left behind abundant knowledge. And this is the same of all the Prophets.
This inheritance is not particular to certain people, it is for all people. But there are people who take an abundant portion of it, and there are others who take a little bit.
Hadith: whoever takes an abundant portion of it has acquired abundant good
Don't be satisfied with little knowledge. One or two drops of knowledge will not change the person. In our present time, with all the afflictions around us, we need abundant knowledge in order to reform and cure the sicknesses of our hearts.
The knowledge the Prophets and Messengers left behind is knowledge about Allah, His names, Attributes, Actions, How to worship Allah and reform ourselves by these names, etc.
How should I deal with the knowledge in order for it to have an effect on me? We attend all the time, but it is enough that we learn today and close your notes and not open it until the next week. If you are seeking change in your life, purification of your heart, you have to repeat the information to yourself.
You need to think and consider it throughout the week, in order to reach يقين. You will not be able to attain certainty until the knowledge is established well in your heart.
There are people who learn but there is no change. This is because the knowledge they have acquired is not well established in their hearts such that it affects their behaviour.
1) Acquire knowledge about the names
2) Know the evidences of the names from the Qur'an and Sunnah.
3) See the impact of this name or attribute around you
Eg. You learnt about Allah's mercy. Look around and see at the impact of Allah's mercy in His laws, decrees, universe, etc.
4) Use this knowledge to cure your sickness.
Eg. Every one of us has certain sicknesses like envy, etc. In this case you have to stregnthen your knowledge about Allah الرزاق
5) Ask Allah help and guidance
We will never be able to reform ourselves until we ask Allah guidance and help. Allah is المستعان
Don't expect an immediate change. If you continue studying about Allah and being patient in acquiring knowledge, there is hope that you will change, but it will happen in a subtle way. It is something gradual, such that you can't feel it. Allah is اللطيف.
Drastic change in humans is something dangerous.
Don't lose hope or despair in Allah's mercy. Ask Allah help and he will change and make you a better person.
If you forgot, go back and repeat the knowledge again and again. Once is not enough, you may need to study a whole name your entire life. We can't encompass Allah's attributes.
القيوم
The beginning of the Qur'an until the end is all about Allah's actions. And Allah's actions indicate His قيوميه.
He is the One who turns us while we are asleep. He is قائم over us. Because people don't know Allah by His actions they fell into Shirk or Kufr. They attribute the actions of Allah to other than Him. When we talk we attribute everything to ourselves.
Eg. "I understand" , "I can manage" , etc. instead of "Allah will manage my affair for me" Because this is actually Allah's action not ours. Allah is the One teaching us.
When we hold the pen and 7write, Allah said, "الذي علم بالقلم"
This writing with your pen is taught to us by Allah. But we attribute the action to ourselves. "I taught the child"
It's always I, i, i, you never hear people attributing things to Allah. The true believer attributes the actions to Allah.
Another impact of Allah's قيوميه:
(13:33)
أَفَمَن هو قائم على كل نفس بما كسبت.....
This verse has two meanings:-
1) Allah is the One who takes charge, guards, knows about every soul and what it has earned, etc.
2) Allah will deal with every person according to what he has earned. If he does good, Allah will deal with him with his mercy and kindness, and if the person does evil then Allah will nurture or punish him.
There is no need that you do but Allah either will compensate you for it or nurture you and teach you a lesson.
It is of Allah's greatest favour that if a person commits sin in this world, Allah will hasten his punishment in this world. Never complain whenever you see that you are facing calamities and problems in your life, then Allah wants to purify you of your sins, before you meet Him on the Day of Judgement.
How Allah nurtures people according to their actions:-
سورة القلم
This Surah is a Makkan Surah. In Makkah the Prophet faced a lot of persecution. They called him a madman, a magician, a fortune teller, etc. and he bore all this hardship with patience.
In this Surah Allah defends him and emphasises three matters:
a) Allah affirms the Prophethood, the truthfulness of the Prophet and refutes all the doubts the disbelievers forge against him
b) Allah narrates the story of the owners of the garden and how Allah dealt with them when they showed ungratefulness
c) The hereafter, the horrors of the Day of the judgement, the recompense of the believers and the criminals.
Verse 1-7:
Allah swears by the pen. This is either the pen which Allah first created or the pen with which the Angels are recording our deeds.
The matter Allah is swearing about: ما انت بنعمت ربك بمجنون
و انك لأجر غير ممنون
و انك لعلى خلق عظيم
Allah is praising the Prophet, and that he is innocent from all what the disbelievers forge against him. Allah is refuting them and defending the Prophet. He has an exalted, high character.
Verse 8-16:
Allah praised the Prophet in the previous verses, and here Allah mentions the blameworthy characteristics of the disbelievers:-
1) مكذبين
2) مداهنة
3) حلاف مهين
4) هماز
5) مشاء بنميم
6) مناع للخير
7) معتد
8) أثيم
9) عتل
10) زنيم
These verses are about AlWaleed Ibn Mugheerah. He was one of the notables of the Quraish
When Allah revealed all these verses about him he said, "All these are in me, but what about زنيم?" then he went to his mum and asked who his father was. His mother told him that his father was barren, so she committed adultery with a shepherd. He didn't even know he was illegitimate, Allah disclosed him.
Allah sent the Prophet to them as a blessing, but instead of thanking Allah for that blessing, they dealt with it with denial.
ان كان ذَا مال و بنين
اذا تتلى عليه ءاياتنا قال أساطير الاولين
Therefore Allah dealt with them in Verse 17: أنا بلوناهم كما بلونا اصحاب الجنة
Because they denied the blessing of Allah and showed ungratefulness, Allah afflicted the Quraish with a drought, severe hunger, etc. The Prophet invoked against them.
The story of the people of the Garden-
The owner of the gardens inherited their garden from their father, who was a righteous man. Whenever he harvested the fruits, he gave 1/3rd in charity to the poor. When the children inherited this, they decided to stop giving the poor the fruit. At night they planned to go early in the morning and pluck the fruits. They merely intended this and fell asleep. Allah sent a destruction to that garden and burnt it entirely. They didn't do any action yet, they just resolved to do evil, and this indicates that we are accountable for our resolutions and intentions. In the morning they left quitely and whispered. They didn't say ان شاء الله and this indicates that they were sure of themselves and no one had power over this garden except them. Then they saw their garden, and one among them reminded them. This was a nurturing from Allah. They regretted and turned to Allah in repentance.
This story tells us about three matters:
1) Whoever doesn't thank Allah for the blessings that Allah has given him, Allah may remove that blessing.
How do we thank Allah for a blessing? Use that blessing in obedience to Allah, not in disobedience.
Allah mentioned how he will deal with Waleed Ibn Mugheerah, "سنسمه على الخرطوم"
خرطوم is used for animals. As a humiliation for the person who called the Qur'an tales, Allah said he will brand him on his nose. Allah will disgrace him.
Whatever blessing Allah has given us, we have to deal with it with gratitude. We should not deny the blessings or attribute it to us or other than Him.
2) The story emphasizes the statement of the Prophet, "Everyday two angels come down from the heavens. One of them says, 'O Allah compensate every person who spends in your cause.' And the other one says, "O Allah destroy the miser'"
3) It affirms the statement of Allah in (35:43)
السىء و لا يحيق المكر السيئ الا باهله
The evil plot will not encompass except the one who plotted it. They plotted to deprive the poor people, Allah deprived them. And this is a general rule in life.
Allah deals with His servants in accordance to their actions. If their action is good, Allah will deal with them with good, and if they do wrong Allah may punish and nurture them.
HADITH: Narrated by Abu Saeed al Khudri, some people from the Ansar came to the Prophet asking him, and the Prophet gave them until everything in his hand finished. Then he said, "If I have something I will not withhold it for myself or other than you."
Then he advised them by saying,
"من يستعفف يعفه الله
و من يتصبر يصبره الله
و من يستغني يغنيه الله"
Whoever refrains from asking or begging, Allah will make him contented.
Whoever will show patience, Allah will bestow upon him patience.
Whoever will be satisfied with what Allah has given him, Allah will make him self sufficient.
(Bukhari)
Our actions comes first. Allah deals with us according to our actions.
الاستعفاف
This has two meanings:
1) Because this Hadith is about spending, it means that the person will not ask or beg. If you don't beg, Allah will suffice him and protect his honour. Allah will fulfil his need. Whoever doesn't refrain from asking all the time, Every time he asks and takes, Allah will open another gate of neediness for him. His needs never end. Whatever he takes will never be sufficient for him. If he refrains from asking, and puts his need at the gate of Allah alone, Allah will enrich him.
If he practices Tawheed, knows that no one can help and suffice him except Allah, he will ask Allah alone. This is the person whose heart is attached to Allah.
A person may come in need, and he asks Allah, but things will disrupt and weaken this relationship with Allah. Such as:
a) Our human nature. We are by nature hasty. If you are in need the Shaytan may whisper and cause us to fear and be in haste and ask the people and not Allah. It is better to ask Allah and be patient. The Shaytan will make you lose your mind and patience, he makes you disturbed. Stay firm and let your heart be attached to Allah.
عبادة المراغمة - Enraging the Shaytan
Don't listen to his whispers, stay firm, attach your heart to Allah alone, and remind yourself that Allah is the only one who can give you. In this way you will humiliate and disgrace the Shaytan. Do the opposite of what he wants you to do.
The Shaytan wants you to lose your Tawheed and to make your heart attached to the people in order to humiliate you.
Tawheed enrages the Shaytan the most.
2) This is the more famous meaning of the word. It is to keep oneself chaste.
In (24:33)
If one isn't able to get married, Allah commands them to keep themselves chaste until Allah enriches them from his bounty. The word يستعفف.
وليستعفف = لام الامر
As-Sa'di said, "This is a ruling concerning those who are unable to get married either because they are poor, don't have the means, or their guardian is refusing to allow them to get married"
Allah is ordering them to keep themselves chaste. They have to protect their eyes from looking at Haraam, ears from listening to the Haraam, their private parts from committing Haraam.
Let him take the means to stay away from the Haraam.
HADITH: O young men, whoever among you can afford to get married then let him marry for it is more effective in lowering the gaze, and whoever can't do that then let him fast, for it is a protection for himself.
Whoever does this Allah will help him protect his chastity. Allah will enrich her and suffice her.
With all the temptations around us, it is very hard to keep oneself chaste. Whoever does this Allah will help them and make them contended, and may make that person married to someone righteous.
The scholars said that keeping oneself chaste is one way of marriage.
Story: a young man went for Hajj with his mother. After he performed hajj he came back, went back to his small shop. There was a lady there who tried to seduce him. He followed her, and on his way, he remembered and repented and went back to his shop. The next day, when he went to his job, an old man stood at the same place where that prostitue saw him and offered his daughter in marriage to him.
"و من يستعفف يعفه الله"
Qurtubi said explaining the previous verse, "Allah mentioned the story of the righteous man in Madyan in Surah Qasas. He offered his daughter to Musa. It is not a shame for the father to offer his daughter to a righteous man"
People consider this a humiliation.
Hadith: when Hafsah became a widow, Umar went and offered his daughter to Abu Bakr, then Othman, then the Prophet Muhammed. (Bukhari)
He chose the righteous man for his daughter.
As-Sa'di said explaining (24:32)
Allah is commanding the fathers, the guardians, who have those who are single under their guardianship regardless if they are male or female, to marry them.
This is a command of Allah and an عباده.
A father saw a man in a Masjid who used to pray everyday. They are from a noble family and the boy wasn't, but because he was righteous, he offered his daughter. These marriages are blessed by Allah.
Whoever practiced this Ibadah, Allah blessed their marriage. They are acting upon the command of Allah.
Even if that boy is poor, Allah said, "ان يكون فقراء يغيهم الله من فضله"
When you refuse to let your son get married, you want him to finish his university, work, etc. You'll be burdened with the sin if he fulfils his desire unlawfully.
The woman has to protect their chastity, wear hijab, be modest, take the means of الاستعفاف
Hadith: the eyes may commit adultery, the ears may commit zina, etc.
A righteous, good man, not just anyone,
And if your intention is استعفاف, Allah will help you.
Ibn Mas'ood, "Seek richness through marriage for Allah says, ....
Hadith: Abu Hurayrah mentioned that the Prophet said, "It is upon three persons that Allah promised to help: The person who wants to get married seeking chastity, a slave who makes a contract with his master with the aim of buying his freedom, the mujahid who gives for the sake of Allah"
Hadith: whoever gives for the sake of Allah, withholds for the sake of Allah, loves for the sake of Allah, hates for the sake of Allah, marries for the sake of Allah, has perfected his Eeman. (tirmithi - authenticated by AlAlbani"
