Many people complain that there is no effect on them when they recite آيات الكرسي. This is because they aren't reciting it with an attentive heart, nor do they understand the meaning and impact of the names and attributes of Allah mentioned in it. Of the names in this verse are الحي and القيوم.
الحي = Allah has a perfect eternal life, and this entails perfect attributes.
القيوم = Everything that exists in this life is by Allah and everything is in need of Allah for their existence and the continuity of their existence in life.
After knowing this, will your heart turn to other than Allah? Will you strengthen your relationship with the One in whose hand is your life, or the people, who are in need of Allah just as much as you are?
Understanding the name القيوم will perfect your Tawheed.
Allah, القيوم, is مدبر. He is the One managing our lives. In (10:3):
Because we are ignorant of the fact that Allah is مدبر, we've deceived ourselves. We think we have full control and management over our lives. In reality, Allah is managing our life in way which suits us best. Nothing occurs without His knowledge, wisdom, and will.
Sometimes we may wish for things and not get it, and this is because the thing we wish for isn't good for us. Allah will not give us more than we need. If Allah takes something from you, or you go through a problem, know Allah is managing your life. So say الحمد لله.

Allah created us (قيومية الخلق), provides for us (قيومية الامداد) and protects us (قيومية الحفظ).
When Allah says He protects you, then you shouldn't be afraid of anything. Nothing can harm you, whether it is a person, an insect, etc, without the will and knowledge of Allah. Allah knows about everything that happens in His dominion, and nothing can move without His will. When you know this your heart will be at peace.
So whatever happens in the universe of hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, wars, bombs, etc. all happen with Allah's will. We see events like this as something harmful, but it is nothing more than a trial.
What will you think of Allah?! Do you think that these evil people are doing these things without the knowledge and will of Allah?!
In (6:59):
If Allah knows about when and how the leaves have fallen in complete detail, then how will He not know about the falling of bombs?
Feel with comfort in your heart because you are under Allah, القيوم's care and protection. This is an honour and a blessing from Allah. Don't allow the Shaytan to frighten you about the future, about people, etc.
When your ايمان in this name increases you will reach the state of knowing that whatever touched you would have never missed you, and whatever missed you would have never touched you.
One of the important aspects of the قيوميه of Allah is قيوميه الهداية.
There are two types of guidance:
1) هداية الإرشاد
Allah shows us the truth, guides us to it and makes us recognize it.
But not everyone who recognize and sees the truth will be guided. Only those with:
2) هداية التوفيق
Allah will enable this person to act upon the truth he recognized. This is what is included in the verse, "اهدنا الصراط المستقيم"
We ask Allah every day in our prayer to guide us to the truth, keep us firm on it until the end.
Many people are shown the truth, and are guided to take the action, but only few remain until the end. Many people relapse half way and go back. تثبيت is in Allah's hand, it is His action.
"يثبت الله الذين آمنوا"
Continuation:
If the person turns away Allah will nurture him to bring him back, but many people don't understand the تربيه of Allah. They fail. Then Allah repeats the same trial again and again. Yet despite this, many people remain in their darkness of ignorance.
If after sending messengers, receiving books, seeing the universal signs of Allah, going through decrees, the person still is not guided it means his heart is sealed (طبع). No guidance can reach it.
We have to learn from the nurturing of Allah. We wonder why the same situation is repeated again and again.
If you don't know what the problem is with you what should you do? Practice عبادة الاستهدى. Ask Allah to show you guidance, the reason this is happening to you, etc. Have trust in Allah. When the person raises his hand asking Allah, Allah is shy to leave that hand empty. If you ask Allah to guide you, to enlighten and open your heart, Allah will not let you down. He will guide you and open your eyes sooner or later. But be patient and stay at the gate of Allah until Allah opens your heart. Allah is able.
There are so many situations we go through and we don't know what to do or say, and you hear a whisper in your heart telling you what to do. This is an angel Allah sent to guide you. But not everyone feels this, only those who ask Allah to guide them.
If a little turning of the heart away from guidance happens, the test immediately comes.
The four قيوميه الهدايه are mentioned in (31:20)
سخر = Subjected
اسبغ = It is as if we are submerged, dipped in the blessings of Allah
This verse implies قيومية الامداد.
The apparent blessings are things like our form, our children, the water, good health, etc.
The hidden blessings are things like faith, knowledge, guidance, the blessing of the hereafter, etc.
In spite of this the people dispute regarding Allah. They raise doubts regarding Allah, the prophets, the religion, and argue without knowledge, a book to refer to, and without any guidance.
This part of the Verse implies قيوميه الهدايه.
Whenever you see "الم تروا" in a verse, it means you need to think considerably. Whatever Allah has subjected for you should make you remember Allah, thank Him, etc. not be blind to these blessings and dispute regarding Him.
Why are they blind? They have no knowledge, no guidance, no book, etc.
E.g. There are people who are attached to the means. If they are sick and you tell them to invoke Allah Ash-Shafi they don't take it seriously or are not satisfied with making Dua. They want something materialistic, a 'quick fix'. They don't realize that the doctors, the medicines, are in Allah's hand. He is the one who subjected these means.
This is exactly what Allah mentioned in (39:45):
They become very happy when you give them good medicines or suggests good doctors, but when you tell them to make Dua they don't.
What is the problem with them, why do they argue? The answer is in the next verse (31:21)
Blind Imitation and Following.
E.g. Vowing.
If someone had a child going through exams she says, "O Allah if you make her pass I will do such and such"
The ruling of this is that it is disliked.
Narrated by Abu Huraira, The Prophet said, "Allah, The High and Exalted, Says, 'The nadhar (vow) does not bring about for the son of Adam anything I have not Decreed for him, but his nadhar (vow) may coincide with what has been decided for him, and by this way I cause a miser to spend of his wealth. So he gives Me (spends in charity) for the fulfillment of what has been Decreed for him what he would not give Me before but for his vow!" (Bukhari)
The passing of your child is decreed already. The vow will not cause the person to pass and many people don't understand this.
And when you tell people not to vow they say, "Everyone is doing it" or "So-and-So did it and look what happened". This is blind imitation, and the Shaytan makes their evil deed fair seeming to them.
What is the way of Salvation? (31:22):
العروة الوثقى is لا اله الا الله
How will Allah deal with the people who argue? (31:23-24)
In Verse 29, Allah repeats قيومية الامداد and الهدايه:
Allah didn't create anything in this universe except with truth and comprising of truth. Therefore Allah says in Verse 30:
When you contemplate on the universal signs it will lead you to realize that Allah is the truth and everything other than him is falsehood and that He is the most High the most Great.
In Verse 31:
Allah nurtures these people who argue by making them go through hardships. In Verse 32:
When a trial comes to these people they invoke Allah day and night, yet when Allah saves them they divide into two groups:
a) مقتصد
This person forgets and doesn't remember Allah much, committing sins again. He still worships and thanks Allah but not as much.
b) ختار كفور
He promises Allah that He will be good if He lifts the trial, and when Allah takes the trial away He is treacherous and doesn't keep his promise, along with denying that Allah ever helped Him. He attributes the blessing to other than Allah.
Allah is describing our state. How we go through situations, deal with Allah, and our attitude. Look into your situations.
There are signs all around us which should increase us in faith. We need to open our eyes and look around us. If you don't benefit from these signs then Allah will nurture you.
E.g. Water
This is a blessing from Allah. How do we deal with this blessing? Are we مقتصد? Are we ختار كفور?
When you are deprived of it you should ask yourself why. This is a nurturing from Allah.
When we are deprived of every blessing then we are being nurtured by Allah. This happened by Allah's command.
Thank Allah and it will come back to you. If you are deprived of a blessing then perhaps you haven't shown gratitude for it.
Before Allah makes a person go through a crisis in their life, Allah will make them learn about that situation.
E.g. Allah will teach him about the reward of patience. After this, Allah makes the person go through the calamity.
There have been plenty of times where you go to a class and go through a situation related to what you learnt. This is the nurturing of Allah, in order that you behave in the way Allah told you, so that you receive abundant reward.
Allah will remove obstacles that is between you and increasing in guidance.
E.g. Allah may remove people from your life temporarily or permanently in one way or another because they were an obstacle between you and Allah.
But those who are ignorant may fall into depression and feel hopeless and do not increase in faith. They don't understand the nurturing of Allah.
When Allah removes someone from your way don't feel sad or with regret. Increase in good until you meet Allah. Don't be paralysed and feel like it's the end of the world. Have hope and trust in Allah, think good of Him, and continue on your way. Be optimistic and feel good.
It may not just be a person, it could be wealth, or anything. Feel happy, Allah wants good for you.
